Chris Avellone talks about inXile entertainment's upcoming Kickstarter for Torment: Tides of Numenera. Kickstarter launches at 14:00 UTC (6am PST) on Wednesday, March 6. tormentRPG.com
Planescape: Torment successor (even if it's not a sequel)? Bring it on! BTW He forgot about mentioning Mark Morgan (guy who created the Planescape:Torment OST)as an OST composer
rofl, I came here from the Kickstarter page (after contributing) to ask wtf is up w/ his thumb. So thanks for clearing that up. In future, I'd recommend a stunt double thumb so you're not freaking people out. :P
The stars have aligned! We now have Chris on board. The all star team has been assembled. Never thought I'd see it happen but can't possibly be more elated that it has! 'An incredibly fucking great idea!' indeed!
Wow I did notice similarities in Mask of the Betrayer, but I thought I was just imagining it! :D In any case, I love many people from the team you guys have put together, and I have full confidence the game will be amazing!
To be honest, I'm not comfortable backing a second project by a company before the first one is released. I know, in the 'old' model you had to have a second project in pre-production (and I assume funding secured) while the first one is going full-steam ahead in production. But in the old model I didn't put up money years in advance.
Man, Avellone seems so professional. Even if he didn't end up working on it, this video would've convinced me to fund. (Well, that and the fact that Pat Rothfuss is ALSO working on it, but still.)
That was a tad strange, yes (seeing that they released PS:T in 1999). Maybe Mr. Avellone or someone else from the old team kept revising it in their spare time...lol (since its version 1.5). I honestly have no idea :)
BTW This Torment game will be using the Unity engine with full 3D environment like Wasteland 2 which SUX compared to how Project Eternity will be made.
Relax guys. Chris's thumb is fucked because he holds his pen SUPER hard when he gets his writing groove on. The thumb had to get that way for him to deliver us the amazing stories he has. We salute you, thumb.
I really want to support a Torment sequel, but despite the fantastic work InXile is doing in Wasteland 2, which so far is looking like exactly the game I want to play, it doesn't feel right Kickstarting another RPG before putting my hands on the first one. I believe most people will feel this way.
Boneslark : Thats fairly easy to answer. There are fewer and fewer publishers out there, and the mammoths that remain wants big mainstream titles (CoD, Modern Warfare, etc), "smash hit" titles that will sell millions and millions of copies. This type of role playing game is not likely to have anywhere near the "mainstream market appeal" of the above mentioned games, and will likely sell substantially fewer copies. Hence, its not interesting to them. Sad, but true.
That's called "hitch-hiker's thumb" and it's hereditary (like connected or unconnected earlobes.) People with hitch-hiker's thumb are only very slightly less human than those with normal thumbs - so basically he's a tiefling.
Still a bit skeptical about this without Chris's input, but I'll donate. I was planning to do a ridiculously excessive $500+ pledge but now I'll just spend whatever the digital copy tier is.
Actually, that is a myth. There is no such dichotomy. Peoples' thumb angle varies greatly. There is a relatively smooth continuum in the population from "straight" to "hitch-hiker". Most people are somewhere between the two.
Monte Cook wanted to give all Fighters a hard nerf, and wanted to buff all Spellcasters in 3.5 D&D. Aside from that, Monte has made some incredible fluff with Numenera and his previous projects. Coincidentally, if you're playing Numenera, play a Nano. They're OP as shit.
2:42 Monte Fucking Cook, ahahahah, that alone made my day.. Gogogo kickstarter! All bake and let's give these guys a shot to create an awesome game like no other nowadays ;)
Planescape Torment! Take my money. I always wanted Chris Avellone to be involved, but his endorsement is good enough for me. I always thought Chris sold the game a bit short in interviews.
I totally understand why a small indie producer would start a kickstarter , but as he says in the video most of them are proven themselves in the gaming industry...Why do they need OUR money to make games now?
It's called hitchhiker's thumb. It's a genetic thing. My girlfriend has the same creepy thumbs and I tell her all the time that her thumbs are creepy. *gives normal thumbs up*
Wish I played original back when...so hard to play now on my high-rez monitors. I'd kill for a high-res remake of the original (a little better UI won't kill me either).
I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that the new game is not going to actual Planescape. In fact, I guess it will have nothing to do with the setting in terms of characters, locations, etc.
Too bad inXile's portfolio under the name inXile doesn't inspire as much confidence as their nostalgic titles... But I suppose this and Wasteland 2 will make or break the company regardless, so whatever. Don't disappoint us.
Because the industry is stagnant. Big name publishers (the people who fund developers to make games) won't go near games like Planescape: Torment because they believe they won't sell. No, games like CoD and such- the "casual market"- are where the money is apparently found nowadays. So- thank FUCK there is another option, crowd-sourcing, which enables us to enjoy upcoming games like this. People funding the games THEY want to play, and people making the games THEY want to make because of it.
So we have a money guy (thanks), mask of betrayer guy (great addon), PST designer guy (damn you if you designed the Player's Maze in pst), PST programmer guy (so many bugs...) and Monte (hi) , can't the Avellone guy (OMFG, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOUR THUMB?!) join the party? For me PS:Torment was mainly about great storytelling and very skillful writing. So IMHO, when making spiritual successor" the main goal should be getting all the people responsible for writing of PST first... Well looking frwrd.
I hope the game is successful (more kickass RPGs, hell yeah!), but I'm pinning my hopes more on Project Eternity than T:ToN to be the spiritual successor to PS:T.
It's obvious that nobody would like to work for free , i wasn't questioning that. Im more interested in why no publisher wants to fund these games ? Thats why i said "indie developers" in my example , i'd understand why no publisher wants to fund them but why not funding a promising project ?
maybe no publisher wants to fund the game and devs with experience need money for food too? why would indie developers need money and established ones would not? how would you like to work for some project without money that would take years to complete?
So? It doesn't mean the game will actually end up being good. All we can really judge are The Bard's Tale, Hunted and Choplifter... Sorry to say it, but inXile are kinda bad :P
I want Avellone involved again in a capacity larger than an endorsement. Every game he's involved with is amazing.
Planescape: Torment successor (even if it's not a sequel)? Bring it on!

:P

*clicks Add to Favorites*
It's in my Favorites.
The stars have aligned! We now have Chris on board. The all star team has been assembled. Never thought I'd see it happen but can't possibly be more elated that it has!
'An incredibly fucking great idea!' indeed!
Everything is coming up Milhouse!
Does Chris Avellone leaving Obsidian have any affect on his involvement with inXile?
Wow I did notice similarities in Mask of the Betrayer, but I thought I was just imagining it! :D
In any case, I love many people from the team you guys have put together, and I have full confidence the game will be amazing!
Dat Thumb!
Can't wait this Kickstarter, man.

Really hope Chris will contribute in some form to this project, like he is on Wasteland 2.
Hey, I remember a bunch of those guys!
Man, Avellone seems so professional. Even if he didn't end up working on it, this video would've convinced me to fund. (Well, that and the fact that Pat Rothfuss is ALSO working on it, but still.)

I updated my journal.
Great to hear, thumbs up, fingers crossed. Right after I'll put my hands on Wasteland 2 copy I'll support your next project. :)
I really hope you're involved in this project beyond this video, Chris. Planescape isn't Planescape without dat Avellone.
These sticky notes should be replicated for the Kickstart rewards
BTW This Torment game will be using the Unity engine with full 3D environment like Wasteland 2 which SUX compared to how Project Eternity will be made.
Relax guys. Chris's thumb is fucked because he holds his pen SUPER hard when he gets his writing groove on. The thumb had to get that way for him to deliver us the amazing stories he has. We salute you, thumb.
I was waiting for this. They have my support, but they need to share with Project Eternity :D
I really want to support a Torment sequel, but despite the fantastic work InXile is doing in Wasteland 2, which so far is looking like exactly the game I want to play, it doesn't feel right Kickstarting another RPG before putting my hands on the first one.
I believe most people will feel this way.
One of the later stretch goals will be involvment of Master Avellone in the project ;>

cool stickies :) creative pitch. not that this project needs selling. it was sold as soon as it went live.
Woot they got my Twenty, that is Four AAA quality RPGs on the Future plate for me now.
Still a bit skeptical about this without Chris's input, but I'll donate. I was planning to do a ridiculously excessive $500+ pledge but now I'll just spend whatever the digital copy tier is.
Needs a Chris Avellone stretch goal something fierce.
Dammit Chris. I hope you get to design a character.
Actually, that is a myth. There is no such dichotomy. Peoples' thumb angle varies greatly. There is a relatively smooth continuum in the population from "straight" to "hitch-hiker". Most people are somewhere between the two.
They both use Unity.
That is a FUCKING bendy thumb.
They're OP as shit.
sorry, bit confused. if that is the vision document for ps:t, which came out in 99, why does that document have an 07 date stamp?
Its called hitchhikker's thumb
the joint just goes farther for some people
i have it too
Gotta love Chris Avellone
2:42 Monte Fucking Cook, ahahahah, that alone made my day.. Gogogo kickstarter! All bake and let's give these guys a shot to create an awesome game like no other nowadays ;)
Planescape Torment!
Take my money.
I always wanted Chris Avellone to be involved, but his endorsement is good enough for me. I always thought Chris sold the game a bit short in interviews.
Damn, now I have to reinstall PS:T...
inxile and obsidian give me hope for gaming
Update your Arcanum LP! We want to see you suffer through the bugs
HOORAY!! This is a glowing endorsement- I'll be getting the game :D :D
I totally understand why a small indie producer would start a kickstarter , but as he says in the video most of them are proven themselves in the gaming industry...Why do they need OUR money to make games now?

plz translate me what he talking about newspaper in begining . i can understand 90% of words, but it not enough :(
CHRIS, YOUR THUMB
I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that the new game is not going to actual Planescape. In fact, I guess it will have nothing to do with the setting in terms of characters, locations, etc.
Awesome user name LOL!
Pleasure me with your hitchhiker's thumb, Chris.
I want him to finish what he started first.
You'll have my pledge. Also, what is the deal with the weird thumb?
why does the paper says 7/12/07?
no I'd rather him focus on Project Eternity, this will be a fucking epic game
I don't think thumbs are supposed to bend that much.
Too bad inXile's portfolio under the name inXile doesn't inspire as much confidence as their nostalgic titles... But I suppose this and Wasteland 2 will make or break the company regardless, so whatever.
Don't disappoint us.

Pledged!!!! 125 tier
I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY RIGHT NOW
DON'T FORGET MARK MORGAN!
That's a gamers thumb.
Little Stars sooo cute :3
It's obvious that nobody would like to work for free , i wasn't questioning that. Im more interested in why no publisher wants to fund these games ? Thats why i said "indie developers" in my example , i'd understand why no publisher wants to fund them but why not funding a promising project ?
Yooooooooo brooooooooooooooo
Oh hey, I have two of those! O_o OMG I'M SPESHUL!
Because the game isn't funding itself?
Pledged
Ahhh what is wrong with your thumb, is it broken? :(
I AM THROWING MONEY AT THE SCREEN BY THE HANDFUL BUT NO GAME COMES OUT WAT DO
Holy fuck torment 2 YES!!!
I don't think there's anything wrong with his thumb. A friend of mine thumb looks the same way.
Thumbs up for your avatar :D
This is like there being a continuation of american gods or neverwhere only neil gaiman isn't going to write it =(.
I guess, Chris involvement will be at some cap...
He's got too many awesome people around he's giving thumbs up to, so it got bent with time.
But. . . I thought it was pronounced inksile!
despite your weird thumb, I am pledging
Like were not gonna buy them all.
He's busy with Arcanum and wolves right now.
I wish we got a new Arcanum game
What's wrong with your thumb?
that's one tormented thumb... anyway, good luck, guys! :)
And game from now on must have monster that looks like MCA thumb!
More game designing, less swearing Chris. ;-)
idk, it'd be refreshing to play one rpg without a redhead in it.
If Chris says it's cool. . . it's cool. End of story.
the drawings reminds me of the oblongs
maybe no publisher wants to fund the game and devs with experience need money for food too? why would indie developers need money and established ones would not? how would you like to work for some project without money that would take years to complete?
weird thumbs.
Who cares? Now we get several great rpgs.
i hope non humans are in character creation.
So? It doesn't mean the game will actually end up being good. All we can really judge are The Bard's Tale, Hunted and Choplifter... Sorry to say it, but inXile are kinda bad :P
blub!
I think it's a joke.
It's a genetic wossname called a Hitchhiker's Thumb. I mean, yeah, sure, it's a gamer thumb. Nintendo thumb? Kinda boring to imagine it's genetic.
