    I think it's globally understated how valuable it is to work on your own aircraft like you are, knowing whats going on behind the panels gives you awareness of your systems and increases your chances when having to troubleshoot inflight.

    I worked in the marine electronics field for 40 years. Center console’s, mega yachts, and commercial ship’s. I had company’s cut parts out of different types of materials quite often. One company had a huge water jet CNC about 15 feet tall that could cut through some pretty thick stuff. In my case 3/8 aluminum. I knew a guy back then that wanted me to redo his panel on his twin engine. I told him no way! I was currently flying regularly at that time.

    Really enjoying this series and am looking forward to your future adventures. There is a soft spot in my heart for the 172, my first solo was in the USAF T-41 version May 2, 1970. Blancolerio channel just did a review of a brand new 172 that stopped by Nevada City airport on a ferry flight to the new owner, almost half a million dollars! Looks to me you are getting just as much capability in your build. Side note, it had an AOA indicator very similar to the one on the T-38, up down arrows with a green on speed “doughnut” in the middle, sensor on the right wing in a similar place as the stall warning sensor in the left wing, possible future upgrade?

    • @JimOHalloran
      @JimOHalloran 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not an A&P, so I don't know for sure. But I can't imagine it would be. Acrylic is pretty brittle, so I'd imagine with the weight of those avionics trays and other panel instruments hanging off the back, it's quite possible the acrylic would shatter in turbulence. Looks super cool through. I'd imagine a working plane with an acrylic panel would be great for training avionics techs.

    It looks like you went with the smaller screen. Was that due to size limitations of your model?

    • @GlensHangar
      @GlensHangar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - the 172B model sub panel / stationary panel / yoke design won't allow for the larger screen without a major amount of structural work... which means a lot of time and money chasing engineers to draw it up and get it certified. Not in the cards on my budget, but I know of a company that's working on an STC for it so larger screens may be possible at some point in the future.

    • @francoisbeaulieu179
      @francoisbeaulieu179 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because of proximity to the US, most tools are still imperial, so measuring for construction is still mostly in inches. As to aviation in general, it’s a hodge-podge: Temp in degrees C, Speed in knots, fuel in gallons for older planes, kilograms for newer, altitude in feet for general aviation, though major commercial airlines do use metres now, I think.

      As far as parts; Dynon is one of the only companies I've found where they provide a spreadsheet with pricing, and base systems. They will also help you work through what you actually need - and their recommendations were spot on. My basic system was around $19K in parts

    Watching the CNC do it's thing, it looks like on both sides of the panel it cuts out smaller rectangles, then later comes back and makes a larger cut around the outside. Anyone know what's going on there? Is it making mounting brackets for smaller components that go into the larger space?
