Ivan Cleary leads the pack for the Penrith Panthers | Straight Talk with Mark Bouris

  • When Ivan Cleary presented his son The Clive Churchill medal, moments after the heartstopping 2021 grand final win against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the crowd's loud cheers faded into the background.
It was a surreal moment for the Penrith Panthers coach, who, just a year ago, was recovering from their premiership loss against Melbourne Storm.
And it was a surreal moment for the Penrith faithful back home at the foot of the mountain in Western Sydney.
Ivan and Mark talk about shifting the narrative from a 2019 huge loss to bringing home a win for Western Sydney and the father/coach relationship dynamic with his son Nathan.

Best interview with Ivan I've seen, obviously Mark is held in a certain reverence by these guys to be so open with him.

I remember Baths Boys, St George in the 70's, but watching Ivan playing for Manly, he wasn't the biggest guy, but skills plus. He played with the best, and he knows the game.
So glad to see him succeeding as a super coach.
    I hate Penrith, but I love the Cleary's 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thankfully Ivan is succinct because Mark talks in circles, quite ignorant in many ways, and the choice of language speaks volumes.
