I will never understand why G1 Megatron never got a tank mode as a vehicle mode right from the start. Yes, I get it that a gun is a symbol of violence, but a tank is a symbol of war, which seems more fitting to Megatron's overall character.
Because the characters and stories were based on the existing toys from Takara. You should remember that G1 cartoon was just a toy advertisement. Basically, Hasbro came to Japan and found that the toys created by Takara would be marketable in the US and imported them. Then they thought of a way to marketing them by creating the Transformers franchise, renaming the toys, giving them personality, and creating comic and cartoon based on them. The original toy that became Megatron turned into a gun, so they couldn't make him turn into something else. Only years later, when the franchise gained enough popularity that they can make new designs.
They used the characters from Diaclones. Back then they had no plan to redesign the diaclones. So if the megatron we know and love hadn’t been the gun Diaclone, it would have just ended up being another Decepticon.
I bought this 3 years ago (complete!) for $20 bucks!!!! That's a damn steal for what he is (always believed he should be worth more!). This Armada version & the just recent Leader class versions are as good as each other when put together and are a 2 of a kind display menaces!!!
I know most people say Frank Welker is the best Megatron, but David Kaye will always be my generation's Megatron. And Garry Chalk will always be our Optimus Prime.

I love this toy and prime. Me 0ersonally I dont get all the hate towards prime. I have him complete and he's the best optimus I own. And I own the earthrise one.

I don't believe there were any tank toys in Diaclone or Micro Change, at least none that looked realistic enough to work as a series 1 Transformer.

I had Galvatron for free minus the missiles once, and I found 7 minicons in my house, so cool

Leader 1 from the Go-Bots got demoted to Minicon status.
Sorry to be nit picky but he didn't do the arm pit cannon which is megatrons signature style for his cannon
Leader 1 is repainted and given a new face and becomes Drill Bit(Metro Plex's Mini-con and not a giant planet native if you look at him)
