I haven't got as far as you but I think you might be able to get amethyst very quickly using AE crystal growth accelerators, check out EP 8 of ChosenArchitect's FTB genesis series. About 19 minutes in he builds a farm for certus crystals, I'm not 100% sure but I think it might also work for amethyst, if so it's insanely quick! Great series btw

I'm not sure chain drives actually reduce animation - they still have a spinning shaft after all.
