Cool trick with breaking up the wedge. I've had similar ideas about modifying heads, but never done it yet. that's how Rooster came up with the woodcraft pack axe. It's a good way for someone that wants a little forest axe style to get one by moding a dayton head. More shop time, less shopping time ;) I don't know what you use to make thumbnails, but if you can find an outline option and outline the text in either black or white, it can really help with readability. I'm often lazy with thumbs, but I usually either put the text on a very contrasting background, or outline it. I shrink the thumb to about 1.5 inches wide and see if I can tell what is going on and read the text. Affinity photo is affordable and highly functional with an easy outline option. Screw adobe, I'm over them. That lens looks great, nice shots.
Thanks Steven! I've just got a 7-14mm lense for more shop videos. Should be much better for this sort of stuff. Thanks for the thumbnail tips, this was the first thumbnail with text I've tried and I definitely agree. I'll have a play around on the next one and try get it a bit better. I've made loads of these mods in various styles and weights now. Definitely saves money and means I can get the aesthetic I want but dial in the performance nicely too.
@@elemental4rce The other thing Iv'e done is spent hours and hours looking for good bold fonts that stand out. it takes time. Most don't or are ugly or somehow don't work. But there are a lot of free fonts out there.
@@SkillCult all these little efforts add up though, I'm really trying to develop my video quality. You might not agree but I've always thought that's what makes your videos so watchable.
@@elemental4rce I guess i've just been thinking I'm lazy lately and I sometimes miss focus even. But some of it is really good. The very reason I don't glue wedges. When I haft an axe I leave a bit of room in the kerf, some say you shouldn't but if I have a head loosen I can redress the shaft and drift the head on more, expose the top so I can cut the sides down just leaving the wedge sitting proud. With some room in the keft I can drive the wedge in further without having to replace it. Enjoyed watching this and subscribed.
Had need for a hatchet and was gonna buy one. Instead decided to fix up a crummy one I had laying around with a broken handle. Stole your idea about using a flap disc and angle grinder for the rough carving and bulk thinning. Transformed an ancient piece of hickory from a broken double bit into a nice thin custom handle. Still a crappy piece of Mexican steel but it will do what I need (hack and squirt herbicide for TSI) quite well.
Love this, no mystic axyness, no pretentious bollix. Just a bust axe and how to fix it. Im digging the head too.
A wise man once said "Every tool is a hammer except screwdrivers, which are chisels." Clever vid Owen
That's awesome

Perfect timing as one of my axes' handle became loose as warmer and longer days arrive. Thanks a lot Owen !
Thank you, was looking for an alternative to using a drill, since I always seem to drill into the handle a little bit.
Nice video, short and to the point. Good reason not to glue the wedge in.
Trying to work on exactly that! Thank you.

The mash and a barrel wedge would have sorted that right out😉
Nice vid. You should do more of these.
Shhhhh! None of that
Nah. Couple drywall screws and a bent nail 😄
Excellent tutorial sir.
I'm definitely going to give that method a try next time. Love that axe mod btw.
Looks so easy when it’s not full of barrel and other metal wedges!
Is this a meeting of all the axe TH-camrs that I'm subscribed to? 😂😂😂
Your music is awesome

G'day nate, what is TSI? Weed species?
Just soak it in water overnight and pound some nails and coins in 😉😂
Nice video. Thanks.
Thank you for great tips!
Where i can get axe heads like this?
Nowhere!
