This tragedy of a figure was released only a few years prior to those amazing Studio Series figures. The engineering/quality control comparison is incredible.
I can’t believe I wanted the original one as a child. I look at him now thinking back on the various leader class Optimus Primes I could’ve chosen, and of all of them my 7 year old pea brain chose this 💀
I really liked the AOE Deluxe and Voyager Dinobots just for how cool they looked (actual quality varied), Voyager Evasion OP was pretty sweet too. rest of them were pretty ehh, Crosshairs used horrible rubber parts that tore easily to form the trenchcoat, AND HALF THE VEHICLE MODE WAS UNDETAILED!
Now that you mention it, I wish Legendary Toys made a KO version of MPM Optimus Prime in the Nightwatch colors. They did Nemesis and Magnus, so I'm kinda surprised Nightwatch wasn't done.
How the heck did they charge 60 for this... I doubt it even cost them $10 per figure It's like they saw how successful Prime's 1st-Editions were, and thought they could quarter-ass it and the "1st-Edition" label would sell it alone
I never really liked the aoe/tlk design for optimus. Always thought it looked weird, looked like ultra Magnus walked on set, yeeted optimus off set, and started pretending to be optimus, never liked the idea of the transforming robot looking nothing like a transforming robot, and just never had a reason to like the design. I hated it even more after they so unceremoniously deleted the pogchamp evasion mode for it. The toys made it worse, as this design was made intentionally impossible to transform at a time where hasbro's engineering for theese toys was at an all time low. I simply think that optimus should have WINDOWS on his chest and VEHICLE PARTS instead of random panels that have the same deco as the vehicle. A vehicle that defeated the whole point of robots in disguise as the vehicle DIDNT EVEN EXIST.
@@Jcc2224 I also got him for $15. Wanted a knight Optimus so I got silver not-in-the-movie knight Prime until I bought The Last Knight leader class Optimus.

These things are like, 40 dollars brand new in box on eBay AU, and I've always been tempted to get it. I don't know why. Morbid curiosity perhaps.
Basically they took the complaint from some people arguing that TF toys were getting over-complex too seriously and went too simple that time.
I do kinda like his overall color scheme. And I'm a bit impressed that he can stand up on his own with that ridiculously huge backpack.

Hasbro had a dark period in general in 2013 through 2017, and TF was lucky to not get completely shat on, just barely

In my opinion, all the AoE figures are bad figures. That toy line was really the dark times of Transformers. Straight garbage.
Sure the deco was trash, but voyager Evasion Mode Optimus Prime was objectively a super good figure. The rest? Eh not as defendable. lol
