Elizabeth Leachman and Jane Hedengren waged a 2-mile race for the ages on Friday on the first day of Nike Indoor Nationals at The Armory in New York.
Never before have two high school girls gone under 9:50 in a 2-mile race, indoors or out.
Hedengren chased after Leachman, who closed with a 4:41 mile on the way to a victory in 9:44.16. The sophomore from Boerne, Texas, the Foot Locker champion, has already run faster than the previous national record in the 3,200 meters three times in February.
Only Mary Cain has run faster for two miles among high school girls.
Hedengren, a junior from Timpview UT, who missed the cross country postseason with an injury, ran No. 3 all-time 9:49.45 for second.
"I feel so blessed to have all these girls pushing me," Leachman said. "Jane was out that second half of cross country season so I missed the opportunity to race her but she's incredible and she pushes me every time."
Last September in a memorable early season cross country showdown at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Southern California, Hedengren outsprinted Leachman to win a 3-mile race by a tenth of a second.
Leachman's inexperience with indoor 200-meter ovals caused her to pick up the pace a lap too soon.
"I thought we had two laps left when we had three," she said.
It all worked out. Leachman will race the 5,000 meters on Saturday.

A 5:03/4:41 negative split is madness... This kid has left everyone else behind. And she followed this up the next day with a 15:28 5K shattering Tuohy's record.
Later this year she even ran sub 15:25 Touhy had to run indoors which is more difficult because of air quality and lapping other runners
A negative split is a smart way to run a race. What kind of training allows her to recover so fast for another major effort the next day?
@@jadedbrad she actually is one of these low mileage kids because shes been plagued by injuries in the past so she shifted to a Parker Valby style cross training regiment. even swims on the school swim team in the winter. she runs in the TX state championship meet tomorrow (May 3) and it will be interesting to see if she can set the 1600 record. she already has the 3200 record.
Leachman is a sophomore phenom who will shatter all of Tuohy’s high school track records. So excited about her future.
doubtful
I live in her town. She is an amazing runner.
Tuohy never had someone chasing her like Leachman had during this race.
Hence, Tuohy would have run faster. Just like her record 3000M@@Oooooo-xi2mx
Could be, but I think she'll be chasing Sadie Engelhardt's records at that point.
Elizabeth Leachman is an amazing runner. She is physically built for xc running and apparently has the discipline to exploit it. She has such a great future ahead of her.
Leachman got awesome smoke in her shoes! She's phenomenal! The record books are slowly burning down...
Elizabeth is a beast!!!! What incredible talent!!!!!! My faves: Tuohy. Valby. Leachman!!!🌟🌟🌟
CongratuLations To ALL ! ••••••• °Leachman Is An AbsoLute Phenom & Props To °Hedengren For Staying Right There With Her UntiL The FinaL CoupLe Of Laps ! ❤😊❤
Wirklich wahnsinnig emotional, diese hoffentlich noch kommende „Lauflegende“ zu verfolgen! Ich wünsche dir viel Erfolg und Glück, nicht nur für deine Sportlerkarriere😊
Dang Elizabeth! Great job!!
She's a machine! Wow!
WOW.... Very impressive young woman!
I think her hamstrings are made of elastic. Absolutely incredible how long her stride is, for a relatively short build.
Mary Cain's record is 9:38.68. Elizabeth's 9:44.16 puts her second, ahead of Natalie's 9:44.44.
Exelente Elizabeth , soy Horacio de Argentina

They’re flying
she is the one to watch the record breaker
Future Olympic medalist
Where is Sadie Englehardt from California?
she went to new balance nationals
Isn't this 2024, not 2023?
That girl displayed a very high rate of leg turnover. Did not look like a 2 mile run.
Also: that announcer is the best they can come up with? He didn't do much except recite the competitors' names. It'd be hilarious to hear him try to announce the first lap of an Formula 1 race.

Esa carrera solo para blancas?
What happened to Sadie E?
she has a new balance NIL deal so she had to go to NB nationals instead of Nike
Please tell us Elizabeth has been picked up for the US Olympic team? We've all seen her out run collegiate women's runners in other meets. There's no way USOC can be stupid enough to deny her
Um, that's not how US Olympic track teams are picked. I'm sure she can compete at the Olympic Trials to try and make the team.
In the USA they are not classified or selected in athletics in that way, and they still do not meet the World Athletic classification requirements, neither by minimum nor by world ranking.
Minimum notes
1,500 meters: 4:02.50
5,000 meters: 14:52.00
10,000 meters: 30:40.00
so where are all the african americans ?
Somebody shut up the mother thats screaming
