I grew up with the 91 version too but I didn't realize they were that much different coz I always knew Fester was like this, but after reviewing Christopher Lloyd's version, I kinda forgot he didn't act like this
It's hard to believe this beautiful boy who Charlie Chaplin put on his lap during the silent film era wound up playing Uncle Fester on television. The thing is, Jackie Coogan was absolutely great in the role, as if he were born to play it! Thanks for sharing these great moments. I always felt The Addams Family had a definite edge over The Munsters. It was more warm hearted.
Fester will always be my most favorite family member. He's clearly the most unhinged out of all of them. But like everyone else, he adores his family and his family adores him back.
They do have some of the same expressive mannerisms. Granted it doesn't help that they're both bald. But I wouldn't be surprised if Uncle Fester's voice was inspired by Curly
Carolyn Jones was a beautiful woman, that's why. Her Morticia may have macabre habits, but her looks and the way she speaks, everything makes you want to be Gomez at least for a moment. Plus, John Astin is as great a Gomez as Raul Juliá, just different.

This series was later remade in the 90s keeping the humor of this, but updating it. In the 90s version the new Addams family, fester and Gomez are brothers. The new Addams family even remade and updated many episodes of this version.
Although fester usually appears to be the older brother, and the new Addams family. The guy playing him is younger than the guy playing Gomez and he seems to be the younger brother.
Jackie Coogan's Fester has not dated well - it's a goofy, one dimensional take on the character. I can understand why Fred Armisen didn't want to emulate Christopher Lloyd - that performance was so perfect, it's basically untouchable - but bringing back Coogan's version sticks out like a sore thumb in Wednesday. The cartoonish voice and mannerisms just don't work at all. Armisen should have tried something new.
@@adamriggs2698 Christopher Lloyd brought so much more to the role than Coogan ever did. Lloyd was funny, creepy, tragic, he was incredibly expressive with his eyes, his face, the way he moved. OK, Lloyd had far better scripts to work with and brilliant make-up (a big advantage) but even allowing for that, all you got from Coogan was a one note impression of something resembling a dumb, cartoonish New York gangster. He didn't capture the spirit of Fester at all.
The Netflix version did bring something new - Fester is shown actively running from the law, and steals things and is just a menace to society, which Fester is supposed to be. Charles Addams (The creator of the Addam’s Family) originally described Uncle Fester as “incorrigible” after all.

It’s the original live action depiction of fester. Also the shows meant to be a comedy, and Jackie Coogan nails that portion.
