My takeaway is that there are not nearly enough options in the pocket-able spy computer market and that you have to resign yourself to a sea of nearly identical gigantic, heavy, fragile, glass sandwiches. There are almost no real attempts at true innovation in the space. Even Apple discontinued the "mini" line of phones that they tried for two years and not enough people bought because they all want huge screens to lose themselves in and become hopelessly addicted to. Good video!
Have had my jelly star about 4 months now and it has been a great phone, I love it. For the back lights, you can set them to blink on notification even if the phone is on mute which is a useful feature for me.
Yes, what a brilliant phone. I use the little notification LED for mine. Imagine a phone coming out these days with a headphone jack, a notification LED and even a built-in radio, when the biggest phone manufacturers in the world can't even do one of those with their $1,500 phones.
I'm still rocking my 2016SE, but it won't be to long before I might need to find another tiny phone that can do anything. So I'm looking at some of these right now. I will use the 2016SE for as long as I can, because it really is one of the best phones ever made.
I used the Palm for about 3 months as a daily. I plugged it in for about 15 minutes mid day and always got home with plenty of battery. Then I learned how to Jailbreak iphone and for the last couple of years I use the 1st gen SE. gets through the day fine. So customized it’s perfect!! I still love small phones.

There’s a program called 3utools for Windows computers. Just this week a Mac version was released. I “upgraded” from a flip phone to the Palm several years ago. I resisted moving to a smartphone specifically because of the ridiculous size of most phones. I currently use an iphone 13 mini (which I love) and need another small phone as a work phone to replace my current 6.3 inch phablet.
You are going to probably LOVE the new Jelly Max device. It's a 5" near-bezel-less device and should be the perfect size of "small but not so small it's hard for apps to fit". It seems to offer pretty stellar specs for the price as well. I'm very keen to see how it goes because I know quite a few people who are also fed up with "small phones" these days really *not* being small.
No, I hate the jelly max. It has a 5.35 inch display, so it is basically an iPhone 13 mini, but heavier and twice as thick. It won't be comfortable for one-handed use. It will be even bigger when the case is on and the case will be essential as the clear plastic is brittle and cracks easily when dropped from a few feet.
@@Roos-Reviews My thoughts exactly. Improved specs, but still too big for my preference. I currently have an S10 and will likely purchase a Jelly Star and just keep the S10 in a drawer as a backup.
I’ve only used the Palm, haven’t tried the Jelly Star yet. What’s keeping me from forking out the money for it, is the chunky build. I like the slim “premium” design of the Palm. Also it’s the display, with a 720p high ppi, the screen looks fantastic. But the battery life has got to be its biggest problem. With life mode on, battery definitely can last, but I need to be able to receive calls and texts in case of an emergency.
I felt exactly the same. I never used life mode because what's the point in having a phone if no one can reach me in an emergency? Thanks to a recent commenter I just learned about the Rakuten Mini. I have the Jelly Star as my daily driver. I love it for what it is in the age of 5.7" phones being called "minis". They released a new one which sadly they've started to follow the current trend and called it the Jelly Max. Its massive at 5" screen and still thick. Why they thought that was a good idea, not sure.
I'm sick of phalets too. 2013 was the last time I had a comfortable phone it was a 3.5" samsung which also had the removable battery and gorilla glass it never broke. Phones don't even fit in pockets any more.

But You cant beat how thin and small the Palm is. I can even get over the performance and maybe, just maybe ignore the battery life proiblem because it just looks that good.
I think the Palm phone is one of the most beautiful phones ever made. The build quality is stunning. I tried to live with it and managed for about a year, but it was difficult. If you're the kind of person who doesn't use your phone very much it could still work for you.
The battery life on the Palm had me abandoning it after only 3 months. The only way to get decent battery life is to use "Palm mode," disabling all radios. With all of the radios off, it's an all-day device. Of course, at that point, disconnected from everything, is it even a phone? I needed to be reachable, and keeping the Palm powered up and online meant such a load from charging and discharging the undersized battery that it was perpetually warm to the touch. I agree it's a beautiful object though.
I have both phones and I totally agree with everything you said. I use a 1st gen iPhone SE jailbroken as my daily driver. I love my palm as a spare but I did use it as a daily for 6 months. I wish someone would make another high quality small phone with a 3.5 to 4in. display with metal and glass. I also have a Satrend S11. Nice build quality like the Palm but runs Android 7.
Grat comparison! I have been looking for a 4/4.5/5 inch phone for years because I have small hands and thumbs, but I can't find anything good, Jelly phones are small and cheap and have fairly modern hardware but they are way too thick! Even the latest Jelly Max is way too thick! The Palm is a really good alternative to the Jelly but it has old hardware and is much more expensive. It would be nice if there was a phone with a maximum 4.5/5 inch display, that is really compact and modern and has a maximum price of €200.
Good video. I wouldn't buy either, just because I don't need them, but it I was it would be the Jelly Star for many reasons you mentioned. The Palm Phone while it might look smarter, is slow, battery issues, and hasn't been updated.
idk why these small phones fascinate me, I had a mate 20x (7.2inch screen) as a daily driver for a while now have the vivo x fold 3 pro. I pre ordered the jelly max as a second phone.
I think you should have mentioned that the Palm phone is marketed as a 'companion phone'. It's not meant to satisfy all the functions of a regular smartphone but in a smaller form. All I think I really need a smartphone for nowadays is mobile banking and navigation.
In my opinion the original idea of marketing it as a companion phone is partly why it failed. They locked it to a single network, physically modified the SIM tray to remove the eject mechanism so other sims could not easily be used and charged a monthly fee for its companion use. People gave it a shot anyway and found the 95 minute 'screen on' battery life to be too challenging to live with. To shift the many unsold units they dropped the companion idea and sold them unlocked as ordinary smart phones for a third of the original price. But the poor performance and even poorer battery life make it difficult to live with. If they had made it slightly thicker to house a larger battery and not gone down the companion route it might have had a chance as a good mini phone and we might have seen a successor by now.
If yo like the design of the Palm (which has been my phone for almost four years) but hate the battery life (which is its biggest downfall) try to get a Rakuten Mini (C330), which is almost identical in design but slightly bigger (and larger screen)', with a volume button and better battery life. The only problem is, they were designed for the Japanese market only, which makes them tricky to get.
@@Roos-Reviews I have one but I still need to unlock it, as it's tied to Rakuten (The maker of the phone is Wiko), so the only thing I can't comment on (yet) is the phone's call/network capabilities. The UI is pretty much exactly like the Palm but the bigger screen makes it much better. Also, the processor (snapdragon 439 vs 435) and battery (1250 vs 850) are a step up. I was able to get one via ebay (US), but it took a bit of time as they don't come up that often. Amazon Japan has them as well.
Have you tried the Flip phones from Samsung or the new Razer?, the dimensions on them look really similar to the Jelly phone and you dont need to open them up to use most of their features.
That company bought my patents, prototypes, and shelf them. anyways, I use 4 daily driver phones for my different businesses. A Jelly Star is one of them.
Didn't you write parents the first time and then edit it? So are you saying Insta360 bought patents from you and prototypes for things you invented? I'm guessing you can't discuss the details.
i bought $200 jelly star on sept 2023. this phone really gave what i need. small size, nfc, infra red, analog radio. modern phone just sucks and big. i really hate 5 inch or more display smartphone.
i used a galaxy s7 ever since it came out in 2016 but last week i had to {upgrade} just because many apps stopped working on the s7 because no support anymore so i got the next small and decent phone galaxy s21 and i can say i don't like it at all but i have to deal with it i didn't need a new phone because the s7 was everything i needed plus more but consumerism is so poisonous that makes people so called upgrade for more that they will never use to full potential
You should also have considered the Jelly 2. Imo a better device as it is a bit smaller and more importantly much thinner (3mm). Also 15 gram lighter. Besides this the hardware is almost the same, just 6 gb ram vs 8 and a marginally slower cpu. Both have nfc. It runs android 11 instead of 13. I don't have any issue with running 11, I don't see any need for a higher version. So I would pick Jelly 2 any day over that "fat" Jelly Star. Hope this helps 🙂
Seriously i miss small phones give me a bezel less 5 inch smartphone with Android 13, 720p display, 90hz display, a decent mid range chipset, 4gb ram and 64gb storage along with a 3000mAh battery and I'd be all over ut
I have the Jelly Star and the battery life is just terrible, when the video started it was 95% and at the end of the video it was 83%. I really wanted to replace my old phone with this one but it won't be possible.
It sounds like your battery isn't doing well. Mine drops much more slowly than that. My Palm Phone dropped 1% per minute when watching TH-cam, but the Star is nothing like that. It's normal for the battery to drain over days when the screen is off. The phone is still doing things in the background all the time.
@@Roos-Reviews it is an apk port of the camera app from the Google Pixel phones, it improves the photo quality a lot, in smaller camera sensors like these it is usually like a night/day difference
Jelly Star is not a small phone. It got huge belly. You feel it small because you can round your hand around it. Anyway, I think, after watching your video, I am gonna buy Jelly Star for my parent. Thanks.
Would be nice if Palm and/or Unihertz would watch this video to make what we are ultimately needing. For one, I hate that my Jelly 2 isn't waterproof. I need to uograde to Jelly Star however I do HATE its see through design. I also hate the lights on the back. WHY?!!! My Jelly 2 phone is BEAUTIFUL!!! and sexy looking. Looks professional. While the Jelly Star is probably an uograde that I need the dang thing ( online anyway ) looks like something you might get out of a gumball machine. Childlike. Literally I hate that!!! Hopefully it will look much better in real life since my Jelly 2:does need to be replaced. Maybe I'll be able to find a protective cover for it somewhere that hides its childlike looks. SMH :-/. I DO LOVE MY JELLY 2 and will surely/hopefully love my JELLY STAR other than its looks. I need Jelly Star for a newer version of Android. Hopefully next Jelly will be waterproof along with other pluses mentioned about the Palm. Android version is definitely too old in Palm. As in, I would think, not safe/secure from hackers. Going to order my Jelly Stae now. Great video!!! Thanks.
As soon as I got my jelly star I bought a black protective case. It looks more subtle, hides the lights and adds lots of grip. It cost me about $5 from AliExpress.
Really want the jelly star but didn't get it because I worry about cracking the transparent shell. Then they announced the 4.3 inch Tank Mini, a rugged phone. But it has a laser range finder and camping light. Like who's buying these phones? what's your primary demographic Unihertz? Who is out there saying I need a rugged smart phone that's tiny, packed with 12gb of ram! but it has to have a ranger finder and 4 different light source on the back. WHO? They're doing like 75% of what I want but it's the 25% that's turning me off. Guess, I'm waiting for super jelly star 2 tournament edition ex plus alpha with the rear detachable fight stick and mini-sanwa buttons. A phone that doubles are your main fight stick because why not?
I'm just hoping for a phone line the Tank Mini, without the ruggedness, laser, lantern etc. that's much slimmer and cleaner looking. The Qin 3 ultra has my ideal design, but the internals are not adequate.
Its so disappointing that small phones have died. That palm phone was so beautiful. The unihertz phones while working ok and more modern specs are just so ugly.
@Roos-Reviews still zenfone 9 has a 5.9-inch display, which is small if we compare it to industry standards. I personally love smaller phones ,and I've used zenfone 8 for around a year or so and i loved it. I'd like to hear your opinion about it.
It's a fantastic phone. But like most other phones, it's massive. It can't be used comfortably with one hand. Phones that size used to be called phablets. But a loss of perspective and lots of marketing have convinced people that it is actually small. When I talk about small phones I'm talking about phones like the two in this video which are genuinely small, one-handed phones.
Wow, you're the only reviewer mentioning Jelly Star's front notification LED. It's a criminally underrated feature for a phone to have.

It's just that it doesn't has a global release. English and chinese language only. Size: 5"
I also discovered it for the first time a week ago and was really excited...until I saw availability 😅 Greetings from Germany
cements even more that i gotta get a jelly - thank you!~
The battery life on the Palm had me abandoning it after only 3 months.
I'm totally with you on that!
Unihertz makes high quality small phones right now, and a new one, Jelly max, is coming out soom with 5G
sublime review
Waiting for my order after considering the Qin 3 Ultra
Palm made one of the biggest letdown in smallphones history. They could have done so much better.
Palm seems to not keep updated and improving. From a former Palm pre owner. No Long term plan
I like you video editing !
Thanks a lot for this video! I came across another Uniherz phone that seems interesting - Atom L. Would be great if you make a review on that one too
I have heard the Gcam software will really improve the Jelly's camera performance.
1:24 Waterproof or wayer resistant
Good video. I wouldn't buy either, just because I don't need them, but it I was it would be the Jelly Star for many reasons you mentioned. The Palm Phone while it might look smarter, is slow, battery issues, and hasn't been updated.
the first minute is like every your word is coming from my mouth! are we twins??
Billy, is that you? I've missed you, brother!
@@Roos-Reviews 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great review
my first phone was galaxy ace 2 i like alot iwish they continue them
idk why these small phones fascinate me, I had a mate 20x (7.2inch screen) as a daily driver for a while now have the vivo x fold 3 pro. I pre ordered the jelly max as a second phone.
Have you tried the unihertz atom? Tiny and waterproof but older.
It's too slow for me. I liked the design though. Do you have it?
What launcher did you use on the palm phone?
Great video, does anyone know if the Jelly Star can do Verizon texts? Had the 2e which was almost perfect except it didn't do Verizon texts...
Will there be a newer release of jelly star please i hope so
yep, probably around july-october 2024 im guessing
If yo like the design of the Palm (which has been my phone for almost four years) but hate the battery life (which is its biggest downfall) try to get a Rakuten Mini (C330), which is almost identical in design but slightly bigger (and larger screen)', with a volume button and better battery life. The only problem is, they were designed for the Japanese market only, which makes them tricky to get.
Wow, I had no idea this existed. That looks like the absolute dream. Do you have one?
@@Roos-Reviews I have one but I still need to unlock it, as it's tied to Rakuten (The maker of the phone is Wiko), so the only thing I can't comment on (yet) is the phone's call/network capabilities. The UI is pretty much exactly like the Palm but the bigger screen makes it much better. Also, the processor (snapdragon 439 vs 435) and battery (1250 vs 850) are a step up. I was able to get one via ebay (US), but it took a bit of time as they don't come up that often. Amazon Japan has them as well.
Galaxy S10e is considered by some to be a small phone.
Yes, I owned one for a few weeks and returned it for being so big.
Got a jellystar for a few month earlier this year, but got rid of it, the quality of the camera was not good enough for me...
Have you tried the Flip phones from Samsung or the new Razer?, the dimensions on them look really similar to the Jelly phone and you dont need to open them up to use most of their features.
The palm phone is so nice it’s sad there isn’t newer versions of it, it’s like a tiny iPhone that runs android
That company bought my patents, prototypes, and shelf them. anyways, I use 4 daily driver phones for my different businesses. A Jelly Star is one of them.
Unihertz bought your parents?
@@Roos-Reviews no, Patents.
Didn't you write parents the first time and then edit it?
So are you saying Insta360 bought patents from you and prototypes for things you invented? I'm guessing you can't discuss the details.
@@Roos-Reviews hi how do you put 4 app horizontal 😊on jelly star
how do you get so many icons to show on the jelly star? i only get 3 icons per row even when selecting smallest icon size
I use the Nova launcher.
so your heart says Palm, but you daily the Jelly? got it
If I buy the jelly star , can I transfer all my data from my iPhone 11 to it ? , like you can do with modern phones?
i bought $200 jelly star on sept 2023. this phone really gave what i need. small size, nfc, infra red, analog radio. modern phone just sucks and big. i really hate 5 inch or more display smartphone.
Does the jelly star work in UK and Europe - or do they have different versions?
They should, it got dual sim card capability
i used a galaxy s7 ever since it came out in 2016 but last week i had to {upgrade} just because many apps stopped working on the s7 because no support anymore
so i got the next small and decent phone galaxy s21 and i can say i don't like it at all but i have to deal with it
i didn't need a new phone because the s7 was everything i needed plus more but consumerism is so poisonous that makes people so called upgrade for more that they will never use to full potential
Like that people that put names to the computers or other things. XD. Can't be serious falling in love with a phone or THING. BP
Wow! Amazing video, what's that Home Screen launcher, looks like IOS!
Nova
You should also have considered the Jelly 2. Imo a better device as it is a bit smaller and more importantly much thinner (3mm). Also 15 gram lighter. Besides this the hardware is almost the same, just 6 gb ram vs 8 and a marginally slower cpu. Both have nfc. It runs android 11 instead of 13. I don't have any issue with running 11, I don't see any need for a higher version. So I would pick Jelly 2 any day over that "fat" Jelly Star. Hope this helps 🙂
I did not like the Jelly 2 as much because it has wifi and bluetooth issues and is a bit slower.
@@Roos-Reviews what about Phonemax Q9 Mini?
what about the Samsung s10e ?
I had two. It's not a small phone.
Seriously i miss small phones give me a bezel less 5 inch smartphone with Android 13, 720p display, 90hz display, a decent mid range chipset, 4gb ram and 64gb storage along with a 3000mAh battery and I'd be all over ut
Why does 12MP look better than 48MP?
I have the Jelly Star and the battery life is just terrible, when the video started it was 95% and at the end of the video it was 83%. I really wanted to replace my old phone with this one but it won't be possible.
Even when the phone is not being used for one day the battery discharges like 10 or 12% with a blank screen.
Yeah, I guess I got a faulty one, which is sad. I don't know if I can trust this company anymore.
Which iPhone was that? Towards the extreme left?
3GS
@@Roos-Reviews thank you for replying!
@Severus.S It's my pleasure.
Is it possible to install a Gcam port on any of these phones?
I'm not familiar with that, sorry.
@@Roos-Reviews it is an apk port of the camera app from the Google Pixel phones, it improves the photo quality a lot, in smaller camera sensors like these it is usually like a night/day difference
@Ricky_RSC Thanks a lot
Can the Jelly play Pokemon Go? Or can it not even run the game?
I like more the big display
I wish there was a newer palm phone
Bro we dont have problem till screen size 4.7inch and weight 140gm
What do you think about soyes xs15 ?
It's more of a toy than a usable smart phone.
Does it run google maps though?
Yes
I dont like that the charger port is on the side,
Also the charging time is to slow!
No fast charging!
It actually charges really quickly. It'll go from 10% to 50% in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Jelly Star is not a small phone. It got huge belly. You feel it small because you can round your hand around it. Anyway, I think, after watching your video, I am gonna buy Jelly Star for my parent. Thanks.
you got the jelly instead of the atom. if you want rugged you need the atom
I don't want rugged.
The jelly star wins in my opinion because of the performance
I agree.
It cost me about $5 from AliExpress.
the jelly star isn't waterproof either fyi. might be worth waiting to see if we get a new iteration this year
@@Roos-Reviews which case did you buy?
If you search AliExpress for Jelly Star TPU case you'll see it. It's just a black TPU case.
You could try the Tank mini as it is waterproof, a little bit bigger and is not transparent.
Beats me why they can't make the keyboard orient lengthwise.
It can. It rotates when the orientation lock is off.
@@Roos-Reviews OK it rotates but the keyboard remains the same size. It would be far more useful if it fills the horizontal screen.
rakuten mini replacement for palm phone
Palm Phone were too old now
Its so disappointing that small phones have died. That palm phone was so beautiful. The unihertz phones while working ok and more modern specs are just so ugly.
It's like an Alfa vs a Toyota
I beg to differ, the jelly star is far more comfy to hold than that cardboard thin android 8 os only phone which can numb my hands
Still a great review tho
When did I say the star was less comfortable to hold than the Palm?
my big ass hands i can one hand a pro max with a bit of finger yoga 😂 a regular pro easily
someone tell this guy that zenfone exists
That would be relevant if the Zen phone was a small phone, which it isn't.
