I don't know what took me so long to discover this great African artist. This song is a message to the soul, a healing to a broken heart. 2025, anyone?❤️
I am writing this in July 2022 as I have just discovered this man after watching a kenyan film on Netflix and Geoffrey Oryema is doing the main sound track called Market Day, the most beating sound I have heard in a long while. I am sad that I never heard of him before. I am now hooked to his songs which are all beautiful as I can understand the swahili bits of them. Now I am hooked to his songs. So sad that he died. May his soul still continue to make such sweet melodies in heaven ❤
Hello, so glad to connect with you. Geoffrey Oryema is my absolute favorite musician of all time! But I just now discovered these priceless videos of him performing here on TH-cam. Oryema’s father was beheaded during the reign of the ruthless dictator, Idi Amin. Oryema was smuggled, still a youth, out of Uganda in the trunk of a car and found exile in France until his death in 1965. His music heals me. My fiancé was a Tutsi from Rwanda. His family was exiled in Uganda since he was 3 years old. Gasana was brutally murdered on the front fighting the Hutu army during the genocide against the Tutsi people in 1994. ❤Oryema’s music heals my shattered heart!
@@jeannemariemellor8764 Thanks for the insightful though emotional history! Today 16th Feb is Archibishop Janan Luwum's day! Same day Geofrey father was murdered with the Archibishop in 1977! So sad history
The dad of Geofrey Oryema was called Eronayo Oryema, he was the first Inspector General of Police in a post independence Uganda. He was murdered by dictator Idi Amin. My dad was his driver. That is how he ended up in exile in the1970s in France where he lived until his death.
Did you ask that question from my heart Scovia? I have downloaded his albums and it was one powerful coping mechanism for me during the lockdown. I am actually thinking of drafting a concept of us having a concert here in Uganda strictly dedicated for remembering this Global ICON and LEGEND.
I'm surprised such talent was not more widely publicised as today is my first experience, Sept '22. A priceless gift the TH-cam algorithm do not offer . I'm very grateful for the recordings though..
You just said it buddy...this song is the pure ...mixture of life and death feeling put in together... Sadness and joy holding hands...its a paradox...
By now I thought Acholi should have immortalized this legend. For a start, we can have a Geofrey Oryema Music Awards (GOMA) Don't burry your great sons in a sealed past.🙏🙏
It's a shame on me that I have just came to know about him today. A tourist from Germany asked me "do you know Geoffrey Oryema" I went to Google straight !
Geoffrey Oryema the whole of Acholi and Uganda Wide will never forget you, your songs were inspirational in both times of happiness and sorrows .. Land of Anaka...A song dedicated to his Homeland in Gulu(Northern Uganda 🇺🇬)..present day Nwoya District..about the beautiful land in Anaka his birth place and how he missed home because of the former Presidents Dictatorship..... Really a painful song... Keep on resting in Peace father
I just today read about his passing, after hearing his music for the first time. It's an oddly tender hurt when you stumble upon someone who is beauty personified, only to discover they are gone from this Earth. His music affects me deeply, it's taking quite an effort to keep the tears from spilling over and my throat aches and I don't have the words to explain why. It's all languages and no language at all. His voice moves all through me, it dances up my spine. I'm content to just feel... perhaps that was his intention, after all.
OMG, this man and his music melts my heart--especially this song. After newly discovering Geoffrey, I soon realized he has passed away and now my heart is broken. May Geoffrey Oryema live forevermore in that beautiful "Land of Anaka" where hope and dreams will be realized, and where "The River' will flow and wash away our differences and love will grow."

Am so blessed that he was singing about Land of Anaka where he comes from,This is wheremy great great grandfather was born,we always visit this place once in awhile and when i heard this song,it melt my heart.so inlove with it RIP LEGEND

I first heard this artist listening to a Paris radio station (FIP) air recording and fell in love with Land of Anaka. Later moving to Paris I discovered more of his songs. His spirit stays alive through his music. May he now have eternal life.
Incredible celebration of life by entertaining others. I only heard of this talent today and hear that his spirit has already evolved. I'm so grateful to share a glimpse of this beauty.
The beauty of this clip is that he talks about his country , about his region in Uganda , and in the clip the woman touches the earth, wanting to be one with the sand: that’s what oryema did to his death, he decided to be burned and to scatter his ashes in Anaka. This is beautiful...
Tuve la gran suerte de conocerlo en Francia ,un gran idealista que sufria por estar lejos de su pueblo Su musica traspasa todas las fronteras Descansa en paz amigo

So true. I remember all the hardship Anaka been through those days
