- South of Culpeper, Virginia, there's a five-mile straightaway on the old Southern RR main with a road right alongside it. Oren and I paced N&W 1218 along that road in 1991, shooting one long continuous video the whole time. I incorporated parts of it into my video N&W 1218 ALEXANDRIA TO LYNCHBURG, but this is the whole 5-minute 45-second take, uncut.
As you'll see on the video, we were alongside for only a short while. Other cars soon passed us and squeezed us back to a trailing position. There's too much overgrowth, my rearview mirror gets into the shot too much, the sound is so-so, but man, what a ride it was!
I seen this steam engine in 1989 in Iager WV, i was 9 years old, i will never forget it, such a masterpiece.
Gives me chills. Amazing steam engine.
Seriously we have to get the 1218 back running again
This is a killer video!! I rode behind the A from Atlanta to Taccoa and back in the fall of 91.
The A may or may not ever run again but she will live for ever in you tube movies
The only way 1218 would ever run again is if NS had a third steam program. It would be pointless to restore such a large engine without NS involved because it wouldn’t have any place to go. Not exactly something you can just ferry to Strasburg and run there like 611 (which is really a waste itself).
You can't find this very often anymore...big steam at mile-a-minute speed!
That was an awesome locomotive. If the C&O one ever gets finished at least we will have another awesome mallet running again!
1309's very close now.
We chased the 1218 through N.E. Ohio, I love pacing!
Is it possible that I can use this video for my documentary about the Southern Railway Steam Program? I will credit you in the description. Thanks in advance~Joseph
As long as I am credited. yes. And send me a link to the completed documentary, thanks.
