    Nice list. Only major miss seems to be The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty. Also looking out for The Birdcatcher by Gayl Jones & All This Could Be Different by Sarah Thankam Matthews. Crazy stacked field this year.

      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Rabbit Hutch made it to my long long list. It was so hard to cut it down to 16 though! So many amazing books in the last year 🤩

    Finally getting on to watching your full video! Can't wait for the plod-along!
    The only reason I hope Demon Copperhead doesn't get longlisted is because it looks long and I'm not sure I'm bothered to read it 😅
    They're Going to Love You sounds so interesting!! Really Good, Actually is on my to-do pile for sure! Not heard of The Furrows but sounds amazing!

    • @GemofBooks

      I think DC will be brilliant though!
      There have been so many amazing sounding books released in the last year. I can’t wait to see what the judges pick!

    Great list Gemma. Among your picks, I’ve read Nightcrawling, Joan and Shrines of Gaiety, and could see any of them making the longlist.
    Good luck with reading the list!

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks matey!! I hope those three make it! There will undoubtedly be some shock entries (and exclusions) though 😅

  • @YourTrueShelf
    @YourTrueShelf ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yay, look forward to discussing on Tuesday!! You've made me feel really excited about the list 😊
    Some great suggestions!! I own shrines of gaiety, and the marriage portrait, so hoping for those 🤞🏻 I have just reserved Joan from the library, and I am contemplating reserving Horse.
    I also predict Ayobami Adebayo's new book will be on there.
    Really want to read nightcrawling as well 😊
    Some beautiful covers on the list!! X

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, looking forward to talking about it Tuesday!
      I hope all the ones I own make it 😂
      I think you could me right about the Ayobami. I’m regretting now putting it on my list!!

  • @GunpowderFictionPlot

    Great predictions, love the mixture of safe and risky, the judges will almost certainly have a similar mix.
    I researched almost 200 books before my video, and there's 3 or 4 books I've not heard of! I swear they're like rabbits.
    I think King Rao is such a Gemma book, not because it's like books you usually like, but because it has elements of lots of the books you like in it.
    I'm currently reading River Sing Me Home; love the premise. I've read the Monica Heisey, not sure it's good enough.

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks matey!
      It was my goal to pick at least a couple of books that you hadn’t mentioned 😂
      I have to read King Rao!! So intrigued.
      You say that about the Heisey, but Flamingo and The Exhibitionist made the list last year…. 😳🤦‍♀️

    I love the idea of a plodalong. Defines my life these days 😉
    Lungfish sounds amazing. Serpell's The Drift was a slight disappointment for me so I may avoid The Furrows. I must get hold of The Immortal King Rao and Things They Lost.

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plodding is much more civilised 😂
      Oh interesting on The Old Drift!

    just discovered your channel looking for more womens prize predictions videos and i'm so happy to have found the plodalong! i wasn't sure if i wanted to do the longlist this year but the idea of sharing the experience with others sounds great, why hasn't this been done before? also i have two young kids so plodding is perfect for me 😂 i'm prediction A Spell of Good Things and The Rabbit Hutch.

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you found us too!! My youngest is 3 so plodding is definitely required 😆
      I think The Rabbit Hutch and a Spell of Good Things both have a really good shot of making the list 👍🏻

    New subbie, I'm so excited about the WP! I used to be part of a group back when it was called The Orange Prize, but not recently. Loving these prediction videos, can't get enough of them. Your's is another interesting list! I've read about 4 of those, I think Demon will win and still have to read Horse. I'm chomping at the bit for everything about the prize this year.

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yay - welcome!!
      It’s so cool that you’ve been following this since it was the Orange Prize. I am loving all the hype/discussions/speculation.

    Nice predictions! I have written (and whittled down) my own prediction list and we definitely have some overlap. I just need to get on and actually film it 😅

  • @CharlesHeathcote
    @CharlesHeathcote ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Pleased to see how many of these books we have in common. Your fourth prediction is actually one that Charlie and I ummed and ahhed over including in our predictions. Your number five sounds awesome. Okay, most pleased to see number six on your list as well - adore the sound of this one. Hopeful number ten is on the longlist. I'm intrigued to see how the magic interweaves with the tale - if magic is there at all. Either way, I hope that you've managed to predict a few of the books on the longlist and look forward to seeing how all this turns out in March.

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks matey. Yes, would love to see Lungfish and The Furrows make the list.

    The only adult (By which I mean grown up not 👽🍆) that I have any real interest in! Yay for the three of you - such fun. I will be reading some of these for sure whether they are nominated or not. Did you watch that dark ballet drama Flesh and Bone? I saw a few episodes and ballet is brutal! Ithaca is one I want to read of course. And The Marriage Portrait. Women’s Prize Non-Fiction - how exciting!

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not seen Flesh and Bone - I’ll have to find it!
      Ithaca and The Marriage Portrait both sound so amazing. I can’t wait to see the list!!

    The plod along plan sounds fantastic!
    This is a great list, I've only seen yours, Scott's and my prediction videos so far but it's striking that they're all very different so I'll have no clue on the actual day what will be on there!
    And yes, I also had They're Going To Love You on my predictions list too! 😁

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks matey!!
      There’s just so many fab sounding books, my long long list was massive 😂

    You've actually compiled a list that sounds really interesting! I am 100% planning on reading the Longlist but have NO idea what it could look like. I couldn't even begin to make a predictions list. But, I'm really looking forward to the announcement.
    And the non-fiction prize is pretty exciting, too!

    I’m a plodder so I’m excited. I know very little about the books you are predicting for the long list so I’m going to go with the covers I like. The Kate Atkinson one and the 16th one about Kenya. I hope you at least get 6 right!!

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Kenyan one does look fab doesn’t it!!

    Your plodalong is perfect! I love the women’s prize but am often a tad intimidated by acquiring and reading the 16 titles in the allotted time :) I am curious to see how you will be “structuring the plodding” 😁

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I’ll never manage all 16 😂😂 I will try though. Depends how many massive chunkers are on the list 😅

  • @girlsaint
    @girlsaint ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Missed this live, and was looking forward to it. Goodreads has a list of eligible books and a spot to vote on who you think will make the longlist. So after watching this, and perusing the list (and thinking about the absolute duds that have ended up on lists in the past---- I will try and predict 16 books. I threw the reasons in behind each listing and I am not sure if the spelling is right on all of the names. Will be plodding right along with you.
    1.Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver - Read it and loved it.
    2.Nightcrawling by Leila Mottley - Read it and loved it.
    3 The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell - Booktube darling recommended by everyone
    4 Love Me, Love Me Not by Kirsty Capes- Voted for this based wholly on Alice and the Giant Bookshelf and her complete devastation that Kirsty Capes did not make the short list last year.
    5 Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin- Prizewinner, I want to read it anyway
    6 You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi- Author has been lauded repeatedly- I expect good things.
    7 Haven by Emma Donoghue- Previous contest nominations
    8 Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng- Pop culture author with middle of the road book that might just end up getting a nod.
    9 Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson-Front and center in every bookstore here in Canada. I expect that the publishers will push for a nomination.
    10 Maame by Jessica George- Subject matter with a different take on it (Onset of alzheimers/caring for parents with little support)
    11 At Certain Points We Touch by Lauren John Joseph- Five stars from a booktuber that hates the things I read- will likely get a nod from judges that think reading should be painful.
    12 Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey- Running out of options and your description added this to my TBR
    13 Sirens and Muses by Antonia Angress- Making the rounds on BookTube and sounded tolerable.
    14 The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka - Subject matter and Goodreads description (Onset of dementia, mother/daughter relationships)
    15 Love and Virtue by Diana Reid - Scott from Gunpowder Fiction and Plot recommended this highly and his reading tastes have been spot on.
    16 Memphis by Tara Stringfellow- Chucked this on the list because I had a spot left and was too lazy to look up more books lol.
    16 Delete Memphis by Tara Stringfellow. my 16th pick is Babel by R.F. Kuang

    • @GemofBooks
      @GemofBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great list!! I’m going to have to read Love and Virtue this year after hearing Scott talk about it so much. I’d love to see Babel on the list too.
