At this point, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a pair of fiber optic transcievers and run fiber?

but in this case, its used in places that you dont have energy to power the device, so you use this with PoE to power a Camera, or another PoE Device, using fiber you cant do that without a power source or outlet on both ends
