Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ got me into literature. I hated my freshman English class until we got to read some of Poe’s stories 😂

When I teach Intro to Literature, we read short stories, poems, and drama, and Poe is inevitably one of the most popular in both the short story and the poetry parts of the course. He most certainly does delve into and portray people’s deepest fears and nightmares, straddling the line between sanity and madness. Still very relevant too - airborne diseases included. I love that you’re bringing attention to these classic tales!

Yea, my favorite. Generally, I'm not a horror fan, but I like this one for the irony. It reminds me (a little) of some Gaiman's Sandman issues that have a great story with just a few splashes of horror.

The Cask of Amontillado is my favorite. Also, in his Books of Blood, Clive pays homage to Poe in his story "New Murders in the Rue Morgue". Great stuff.

The Pit and the Pendulum is absolutely my favorite Poe story. Poe had a gift for writing claustrophobic atmospheres that made you feel like you were there with his characters. I also appreciated the way that he wrote his characters as they descended into madness... it can still give me the chills! The Cask of Amontillado is another great one!

As soon as I read "The Fall of the House of Usher" as a kid it became my favorite Poe story. Then later I read "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and that became my favorite. I recently read a really funny story he wrote called "The Angel of the Odd." I had no idea that he wrote anything comedic before I found that one

I'm reading Poe for the first time after picking up another beautiful Barnes and Noble edition. Not as easy to find in the UK. I'm amazed at how dark the tales are. Thoroughly enjoying the ride so far. Weirdly I'm also reading SK - The Outsider alongside it and there are so many references to the Poe story 'William Wilson' in that novel. I love spooky coincidence like that.

My favorite story of Poe is "A Tale Of The Ragged Mountains". It ranks just slightly above a few others for the reason that it has these blackwoodesque vibes of wilderness, strangeness, psychic mystique. The most logic explanation yould be that Poe travelled to the future and copied Algernon Blackwood.

You guys comparing the plague in Masque of the Red Death, which killed 100% of everyone it infected within 30 minutes, to the Virus that shall not be named, which most recover from, is a tad dramatic. Even Mr. Poe would think so. But you guys have fun.

Thanks for reminding me about Edgar Allan Poe. How are you doing Mike. I just looked him up on the Braille Audio Reading Database app from the Library for the Blind and I was able to find about 17 books of his that had been recorded by volunteers, so I added those to my wish list and I will be investigating his work soon. I have only read the Raven, so it will be neat to get exposed to more of his stuff. I am also now about 25% into Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson, which has been really good. Nothing is as it seems with him.

Lauren was in the kitchen standing over the stove, flipping eggs and bacon. She must not have heard me over the crackling of the grease because I spooked her when I got close enough. She jumped and made a little yipping sound that would normally be reserved for a small puppy.
“Sorry,” I said, hand outstretched in a gesture of peace.
She laughed, trying to hide the fact that she was still jumpy from the night before. “It’s okay. Try to be a little louder next time. You almost gave me a heart attack.”
The small TV next to the sink was on but the volume was muted because Lauren was listening to music. A weatherman was standing in front of a green screen, pointing at the massive storm.
There was a tiny headline that said, “Biggest storm in years will engulf western Alaska.”
I looked back at Lauren. She was humming along with the song. I went up behind her and wrapped my arms around her. She flipped an egg and turned her face up to kiss me. Her thin form against the front of my body felt great. My hands searched over her hips and up around her stomach.
“What’s gotten into you?” She giggled.
“Don’t you know that a woman in the kitchen is super attractive to me?”
She gave me an annoyed look, “That’s pretty sexist”.
“I don’t mean it that way. It’s just the apron, something about it is just so damn sexy.”
She turned away from the stove and leaned against it to face me. “Well you’re in luck,” She said, “Guys that wear the same clothes two days in a row turns me on.”
    “Does it?”
    She winked and chuckled.
I buried my face into hers and she met my lips with the same amount of passion. I put my hand down to her thigh and raised it. She then hooked her calf around the back of my leg, squeezing her pelves closer to mine. Still embraced, she whispered, “The stove,”
We moved away from the hot surface and over to the countertop adjacent to it. I raised her small body onto the counter and tried to unbuckle my pants.
Knock knock knock. Fuck, someone was at the door.
There was a wet smacking sound as Lauren’s lips disembarked from mine. The disappointment was clear on her face. “Ralph,” she said. It wasn’t a question.
“Or David,” I replied, “He might have come back to check on us.”
Lauren slid off the edge of the countertop and went back to the eggs and bacon. The food looked like it had slightly overcooked during my attempt to land a quick lay.
I buckled up my pants and went to see who was at the door. As Lauren had predicted, it was Ralph. He didn’t look too happy. I couldn't blame him, I mean his dog had just died the day before.
    Ha, you just read porn.
