After coming to this just today at the end of 2020, it is my favorite male singer's version of this beautiful and haunting song. You captured the pathos and humanity of the song. The guitar work is great. Jacquie McShee and Pentangle are honored.
I always liked this one ...and you do it with your usual aplomb ....its always a pleasure to listen to your uploads John ...especially when I'm sat with a large single malt in my hand....kev
What a suberb tune to have as video number 500! Also, putting down the chords is highly appreciated.. Now I know what I will do this sunday.. try to play this amazing song myself.. thank you Sir! :)
This is fantastic. Actually, a number of your videos have been invaluable to me as I try to figure out some of my favourite old folk fingerstyle arrangements. I'm currently working on your arrangement of Cold, Haily, Windy Night. If you have a list of those videos where you include chords/tabs/tutorials, I'd love to know.
Thanks very much, Raymond. I've just listen to Joan's version, I'm surprised at some of the lyrics. This version is more "politically correct" - I'm not sure how "He'll make a lord for you to wait upon", would go down now. I'm sorry to say that there's none of that sort of stuff in my household - Muggins has to pull his own weight, washing the dishes, pushing the old vacuum cleaner, ... ;-)
I like your interpretation a lot. Nice work. I ask your permission to restore, enhance and master the audio of your performance, because that background noise its a pity. I would like to make a new video with your audio data, and mention you in video credits. I am waiting for your response. Thanks.
He's passed away over a year ago (his son mentioned it in comments on another video). I didn't even find his channel until after he'd died, so I never got to tell him how beautiful his performances sounded (particularly this one).
Any chance that there'll be a CD of you featuring some traditional arrangements, or maybe even original compositions? I'd gladly appreciate a project like this!
Jacqui's rendition is gorgeous, but you, sir, play and sing with an authenticity which is unrivaled. Well done.
Just found this llittle jewel of a song. What an awesome version!

Well done sir. It is now your duty to make a lesson and spread the beauty of the pentangle!

Hello and thank you so much for the arrangement! Have you it combined with the lyrics as well?
Any chance that there'll be a CD of you featuring some traditional arrangements, or maybe even original compositions? I'd gladly appreciate a project like this!

Cheers, Kev. I'd better take it easy on the up-loads if your going to have a large one every time ;-)
oh, one of my favourite songs of Joan Baez
Irka Rabenfeder It's actually a traditional English folk song, but yes, her version of it is also quite good. :)
Nicholas Tidemann Yes, and the version in the video is perfect an wonderful! (And I know, thats a traditional song. But I love Joan Beaz ;) )
I seem to have that effect on the dog and cats as well. I'm going to ask for a job at the National Health as a replacement for sleeping pills ;-)
Ha Ha Ha....I don't need an excuse John
Thanks very much, Jordan :-)
