I started with 430 books in January of 2022 and got down to 70 so far. And I was REAL unhaul happy in the first couple months. I must have deleted hundreds of old ebooks.

I have over 600 physical books on my TBR and about 800 unread books on my Kindle. Yeah. It’s gonna take me 75 years to read it all. Haha!
I would like to get my physical TBR pile down to maybe 200 or 250 books. I need a ten-year plan or something. Haha!
    Love this video!

0:31 love your honesty how huge TBRs can be stressful and how it took a few YEARS to get through your TBR :)

Great advice that I'm sure many people will find useful. For some reason, I've never associated my unread books with my TBR - my brain has just never thought about them that way and it's fine with me. For me, my TBR is the group of books I'm planning to read in the near future, and they're drawn from my list of unread books, plus new releases I'm anticipating and whatever library books have caught my attention. I've been able to be much more organised since I started keeping a list of the unread books I have - I make a note of the year I acquired the book and what format it's in (because it's so easy to forget that I have unread ebooks and audiobooks), and then at the end of every year I can look through the list, see which ones I've read and also decide which of the remaining unread books I want to keep or give away. Basically, just be organised in whatever way works for you and you'll have a lot more success.

I really like this viewpoint and I feel like I’m going in a similar direction. I have my “physical tbr” but I’ve also got a Goodreads list and a library list and an audiobook list. And the lines kind of blur between those depending on what’s available and what I feel like. :)

Marie, how do you keep this list. I'd love to hear some specifics about it like where you write it (single page or notebook), is it organized in any way? Any helpful tips would be appreciated because I want to create some sort of TBR list. Thanks

@@sharonbelieves I use the Notion app on my PC and phone, because that's how I organise everything in my life, but it could just as easily be done in an Excel or Google spreadsheet. I like doing it digitally because it's easier to move things around, but you could also handwrite and use a grey lead pencil so you can erase things when you need to update them.
      I use a table of 5 columns:
      1. *Title*
      2. *Author*
      3. *Status,* with options for Reading, Finished, DNF and Unhaul. When I start reading something I switch the status to Reading, and then use the others as necessary. If there's no current status I leave it blank. When I switch a book to Finished, DNF or Unhaul, I move those rows to the bottom of the table to keep them out of the way, and make them easier to see at the end of the year when I'm unhauling books.
      4. *Year Acquired.* I list my unread books in chronological order by Year Acquired, so my oldest books appear at the top.
      5. *Format,* with options for Physical, Audiobook and eBook.
When I get a new book that I know I'm not going to read immediately, I add it to the bottom of the list (above the Finished/DNF/Unhaul rows). At the end of the year/start of a new year, I delete all the Finished/DNF/Unhaul books (because they're no longer unread/on my shelves) and then I start the whole process again.

I like your tip to reflect on if your tastes have changed. I have books I really wanted to read a few years ago but feel meh about now.
I'm also trying to get rid of shoulds, the books I keep on my tbr because I feel guilty taking them off. Yes, I should in general expand my tastes and read things that help me learn about the world, but if that particular book doesn't help me do that thing because I don't actually want to read it, leaving it on my tbr doesn't help me either.

Great advice! I'm so attached to my books even the ones I haven't read yet (I want to at least give them a chance) but like you said it's hard being a mood reader and figuring out what books you've grown out of. I have been trying to be more cognizant when buying books though!

Thank you for the helpful video. I like the idea of having a cart or something to keep TBR books. I live in an RV so we have the need to reduce items so I'm thinking maybe I could have a special shelf or something.
I'm presently trying to figure out how to organize a TBR list as I find lists very helpful.
That being said, this year I've read about five books so far which is very good for me because I used to be lucky to read one or two.
My books are basically Godly Christian books although I did read one novel. Hopefully I can get my list started and make a big dent in it this year.

I have got soooo many books on my TBR. I’ve got a cart of literary fiction and contemporary, a cart of fantasy, and a small shelf of overflow from the other two carts. That doesn’t even include books on my Kindle. I bought a ton of books during lockdown from watching too much BookTube.
I put myself on a strict book diet. I only read my TBR or books from the library. I will buy a book from certain very beloved authors like Brandon Sanderson or Grady Hendrix.

I have a tbr shelf. I did a cull a while ago. My favourite genre is gentle fiction from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century for example the enchanted april by Elizabeth Von Arnim and all creatures great and small by James Herriot. Most of my books are this style. Is also have a small collection of victorian fiction. Anyway what I'm doing is not buying anymore books till I've finished my tbr shelf. I try to read a chapter or 10 pages every day. I like short books of around 200 to 300 pages that way I can get through more books and I don't find it a chore.

I am someone who doesn't have a lot of money to spend on books, nor a lot of space to store them. I still somehow managed to have 140 unread books. My goal is to try to smash a lot of these out by the end of this year.

I'm so glad I found this video! You're such an inspiration to me. I started my channel in December to help hold me accountable to getting my tbr under 30 books. These are amazing tips! I'm not stranger to unhauling and dnfing but I am being a little bit ruthless at the start of my challenge, taking books off my tbr that no longer interest me. I started at 155 at the beginning of January and am at 139 now by reading & unhauling, and I have until my birthday in September of 2024 to get my tbr down to 30.

Was involved in 5 different groups 7 years ago and bought a ton of books in their related topics. As I'm no longer in those groups, I have no interest in reading that tbr pile. And as 90% are sealed/new I have a hard time decluttering them... 😅
