I once owned a Meade ETX90-EC back in the 1990s. As I recall, aligning it was somewhat more involved because I had to level the mount and center the scope on three stars, not just two. I often had trouble because at least one star was blocked by trees or some other obstacle. What I liked about it's Maksutov-Cassegrain design was the sharpness and resolution in which objects were rendered. In fact, the best view, that I ever had of Saturn, was through that little scope.
This has become my Everyday Telescope. Easy to setup, align and be viewing in a matter of a fw minutes. Bought second hand - it has been used on most good seeing nights - it is easy to take on camping tripsandin aeroplanes. (Mine travels into th Congo on a regular basis,) Only upgrade I would recommed is a mains power pack. First night out I managed to look at about 10 beautiful start clusters, Globular clusters and Saturn and Mars...It also comes with everything you need to really get going.
@JulianArceoOfficial Hi there, thanks for watching! You can speed up the text by just tapping the menu control up arrow at the bottom of the handset. You can speed the display up or down by tapping these keys. Please note: you need to tap or dab them and not just press and hold to change the speed noticeably. Hope this helps. Regards A&NC
Just wondering, while you are doing this review/guide, i can hear a noise from the motor's. I assume this is the telescope keeping the object tracked in the field of view, that being the case, what sort of accuracy do you get from it? Wanting to get into astrophotography and a GOTO telescope would help massively with keeping things tracked. Thanks
just got mine yesterday and fed ex left it in a van for a couple day's and when it arrived the rear diagonal mirror got so hot the glue came undone. so now I have to re-glue the mirror, provided I can get it apart without breaking it!. and it looks like it had been dropped on the lens end of scope causing the adjuster screw, to break through the plastic housing inside so now it wont focus! a really bad design.
I bought my EXT-60AT back in the early 2000's and, unfortunately for me, it didn't come with all the nifty gadgets it comes with now. It did come with the two eye pieces (9mm & 25mm) and it doesn't have with the built in Barlow lens. Now I'm currently trying to find the tripod for it and the 2X and 3X Barlow lenses. I'm also looking into getting the AstroFinder Software so I can update the computer chip inside and be able to follow the ISS. I'm really looking forward to using this thing again after it's been sitting in its box and in the closet for several years now.
Had the earlier iteration with the AC connection which is one thing, however, that Meade controller sucks. In their day like DOS and BASIC, they were pretty amazing. With that said, for a cheap scope (new or used) the optics on these pretty amazing. With stacking, new filters and new cameras, they should be able to do deep stuff though my battery version isn't up to it.
So I got this when I was a kid.... countless years later I want to use it. how does this thing know where stars are? Does it read the color of the star to identify it? This is crazy! Oh and could I use a camera with it somehow to document what I see?
A friend just gave me his Meade ETX 60 last night! (11/12/13). Wow! I just realized what a cool date yesterday was! 11,12,13! Anyway, I really want to go out & look at Comet Ison with this. I'm brand-new to astronomy & telescopes (in fact haven't been out yet but will attempt seeing tonight as it's severe clear with no moon at Ison viewing time this morning! I want to know if it is possible to program the handheld control to find Comet Ison? Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll find it manually, but since I want to take photos I'd love to program the finder to track the comet during exposure.
dear sir, thanks for the full description you gave in this video tutorial. currently, I am trying to find a good viewfinder scope. the one which they mentioned when I contacted Meade in the catalogue is not available anymore which is (the viewfinder right angle with brackets) and I am trying to find another one but without making holes in my small telescope. can you help me in that please.?
Thank you !!!!!! I have the original ETX-60 and I love it ! What a nice little scope and yes is very nice for beginners like myself. I think you can update the skymaps with these though? Would love to know? Cheers.
Hi Joseph. Firstly be sure you are not using rechargeable batteries (especially NiCad type) as the instrument may show a 'motor fault' warning if the AA battery cells deliver less than 1.5 volts per cell. So if in doubt install a set of fresh (supermarket best) alkaline batteries. If the motor fault still shows, go to the utilities function and train both motors (just follow the on-screen instructions). If this does not improve the situation, reset the handset to factory defaults and restart the telescope. If the problem persists, try the 'Train motors' function once more. I'm afraid if you still have the problem you will need to present the instrument for repair. I would be careful not to assume that it is the handset alone that is faulty. Buying another handset may not resolve the problem. Finding an official dealer able to identify the fault accurately would be the best plan. Frankly, unless the instrument has sentimental value I would think twice before spending more than £75/$100/85EUR on it - but that's just my opinion. Good luck. KR RJD A&NTV
I want to put my camera on the telescope, but im afraid my camera and lens to heavy for the motor moving, can you tell w me how many kg does it can carry ( w telescope). And if the motor dont have the telescope, still it can reach the star? Thank you very much!
One of the best simple explanations of this device. Thanks
We got this for our 7 year old son for Christmas. Thank you for the great review. It's helping us get set up to start viewing the sky!

Wow, thanks so much! That makes things a great deal clearer now. Hopefully, the sky will be clearer too when I buy one!

Yes it has a section of comets. It's in there under objects after asteroids.

Sir I'm using a 9v battery
Do you have the original 6x AA battery pack? If you are using a small PP3 / MN1500 type battery this might be a problem. KR RJD A&NTV
Will a Nikon D5000 fit it?

From what I've learned telescope webcams are the best method of astrophotographers
Thank you! it is a very useful video!
I have lost my controller! how can I find another one ahhhhrgghhh please help .. Star gazer from Maine.
Just got one nice easy video thank you.
OK wow, this just convinced me that Meade is about 1,000% better than the celestron goto system.
