When Macy says goodbye to Adam, he comments that the past two years have been a lifetime for him, and Macy throws her arms around him and says "not for me!" This brief but poignant interaction provides another explanation for the dynamic that has kept Macy with Adam for the past few years - their time together in Italy has been a compensation for the time they lost in the past because he had to leave when Macy was a child. Macy spent most of her life assuming that her father was dead, and when he left in 2000 after a short return, she didn't believe that she would ever see him again, so this time she has spent with him in Camogli has been like an unexpected bonus - miraculously getting a lost loved one back, if only temporarily. And when she says goodbye to him now, both of them know that it will probably be the last time they see each other, even if Adam offers her a hopeful "you never know".
