Bella's acting at the end was insane. You could feel the trauma in her screams as she lost it when she killed David. And of course, the "baby girl" from Joel was like devastating even though it was a reunion. She was fantastic!
So beautiful adapted
Bella's acting felt so real, it made that last scene hit so much harder. Joel's "Baby girl" line is like a punch to the heart
That ending is important because it's the first time Joel calls Ellie "Baby Girl", which is what he called his daughter
That scene at the very end where joel calls her babygirl was so touching
James is Troy Baker, the voice actor for Joel in the video game
"They just killed 5 people!"
Video game: Those are rookie numbers
Back in the 70s there was a plane crash in the Andes mountains with a rugby team. They survived by drinking their urine and eating the dead. After two months a couple went off and were rescued then rescued that last 14 survivors out of 45 on the plane. The book and movie is called Alive.
i saw that
They ate the people who had already died. David's group went out hunting for supplies, which included bringing back the bodies of any strangers they found as meat - because there wasn't just one body hanging in that place. I believe in the podcast hosted by Troy Baker (OG Joel) the showrunners mentioned that they were speaking in code about the hunting, like adults were "venison" when they couldn't find any, and "rabbits" were kids. That's why when David sent James back to get the medicine, he told James that he wasn't speaking in code.
@@Kayjee17 I know
Think Season Of The Snow coming out on netflix at the end of the year is based on that.
Is is dark but also my favorite episode of this season. But I love the fact that Troy Baker, who plays James, David’s right hand, is in this. Troy plays Joel in the games.
A lot of people miss that the community was in an off the map resort. Ellie would’ve been completely lost if Joel hadn’t gotten the location and gone after her. He didn’t save her from that disgusting dude, but he still saved her nonetheless. The last time she saw him he was dying on the floor and then after her traumatic experience and not knowing what’s next he showed up and that’s why she stutters in disbelief for a second before falling into his arms.
Joel saying "I got you baby girl" broke me. That's what he called his daughter.
13:12 You guys just hating on the new villain so much was awesome lmao spot on👏
Super happy with this episode, some really pivotal things happen in this section of the game and HBO hasn't disappointed.
For starters, this is really the first time we as viewers get to see Joel when he isn't holding back. Sure, in the game you spend hours slaughtering hunters, David's goons, FEDRA soldiers, etc. But in a show, we get much less screentime devoted to combat, so actually seeing firsthand what Joel will do to keep Ellie alive is really important foreshadowing for next episode.
Secondly, Joel and Ellie's father/daughter relationship is now fully solidified. Where before, Joel had doubts about his worthiness and ability to protect Ellie, and Ellie as well had (and has) major separation anxiety and trust issues, they now fully accept each other as family.
Very good episode. Can't wait to see your reactions to the finale!
Even with cannibalism being an abhorrence in normal society, I think in a post apocalyptic world, many of the weaker non hunting pacts would definitely turn towards it. These group most likely arent built to scavenge and tend to pick on weaker foe. For example in this group, the leader uses religion as protector and provider for his community, while all the while hiding the cannibalism from most of the group.
Another example maybe like that soccer team that went down with their plane and had to resort to cannibalism to survive in below freezing temperatures.
Also, i think with episode 9 would be the end of the first game. 2nd season moving onto the 2nd game.
I haven't seen anyone mention it in the comments but James is played by the guy who voiced Joel and did the motion capture for the video game.
You guys are both amazing. Love your guys chemistry you both have working together. Perfect balance. And love the style of the video. Amazing work as always
End of the world and Ari is worried that Ellie isn’t wearing high vis while hunting 😂😂😂
The fact that he followed Ellie's instructions to the letter "if anyone makes it down here, you fucking kill them"
The actor who plays James, Davids' right hand man, Is Troy Baker!! Who plays Joel in the Last of Us Games!! :D :D
It is really telling how when I view reactions for this episodes, women catch on QUICK to Mr GodlyPedo's intentions. Like in some way, shape, or form so many women either encountered something along those lines themselves, or were raised to be wary and on the lookout for it. That power play, saying she is mature, grooming....with a sprinkling of their warped sense of religion on top.
To be fair though in real life there's infinite possibilities but on TV people fit into certain tropes and religious dudes most always end up being David koresh
@@DiegesisThat's true. But if I'm living in the apocalypse, people talking religious nonsense are the first people I'm avoiding. I'd probably avoid people in general, but the religious ones most definitely. Lol.
props to the actor and writers
One fun detail to give away they're cannibals and venison is their codeword for human meat is at the start where the pastor asks the other guy 'how are we doing with supplies? Venison, elk, rabbit?". Elk IS venison, so why would he ask twice?
Yeah, and that woman didn't look happy about the "venison" and she was hesitant to eat it as well. Imagine knowing that you are eating your dead husband.. 🤢
"And she's not in orange" 😂😂😂 killing me woman. I mean who doesn't wanna stand out in the apocalypse 😂
I bet Carl Grimes would've wished for an orange jacket back in S2 of TWD.

I don't think David's men wanted to kill Ellie out of revenge after they shot her horse. I think they believed it was like a mercy killing, because they knew what David wanted to do with her. That's why James said earlier that they should just let her go because she was just another mouth to feed..
@@jasonschuler2256 Sure David thought it was for vengeance, but why would James tell David they could just let her go instead of bringing her back if he wanted her dead?
She's gonna get an Emmy nom for this episode.
Bonus points for solidarity with the cold ❄️ thanks for the post 😊
"and we are on episode 9."
🤣
I always hate it in horror films or TV when a girl is getting stalked by the killer and the girl hits the killer with something and runs off. Take a page from Ellie's book, you keep hitting that sumbitch until he stops breathing. Sometimes going mad dog crazy is how you survive.
Everybody's a tough girl till Pedro Pascal says Babygirl
Technically I think everyone in that cult will die now, so Joel and Ellie's kill count just keeps going up.
It always gave me chills when after the fact you realize James was gonna shoot Ellie to spare her of what was coming 🫣
I like to think of this as James (Troy Baker) trying to shoot Ellie as the 'real' Joel as saving her one last time.

17:35 did I see a Fight club moment? with an inserted frame???
Troy Baker, the OG Joel from the games, plays James in this episode
David would not have been infected by Bellie's bite. Baby girl is what Joel called Sarah in her last moments.
The guy she cleaved, James, is played by Troy Baker, which is the actor of game Joel. So Ellie basically murdered Joel.
As for "cannibalism should never be not be a taboo": Read up on Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571
I don't know why it is so surprising to have this a topic in a show that's all about survival. I think it would've been absolutely legitimate if they weren't (presumably, assuming the other bodies didn't die of outside causes) hunting other people and if they didn't fed them secretly but give people the choice of doing it or to face the consequence of starving.
@@jasonschuler2256 I mean it's definitively answered in the games but it could be different in the show
Cannibalism is actually legal in the vast majority of the world including the USA and Canada :) The method of acquiring is what makes it illegal
Ughh…such a good episode. Have y’all considered watching Yellowjackets? It’s SO good and twisted.
Not yet. Getting through a backlog
Little girl: You should kill both of them!
David: Shut up and eat your dad!!!
Hearing cannibalism being compared to doing it in the butt was not on my 2023 bucket list, lol.
Anyone else getting a Fight Club Tyler Durden flicker effect in this video?
No, Joel didn't lose it and he didn't go crazy. That is Joel being as rational as possible for the situation that he is in. He is just not taking any shit from anybody. He knows what they are, and he knows that they would be more than happy to slaughter him and Ellie giving me opportunity. Opportunity. Joel is a survivor, and he is not going to let anyone stand in his way if he can help it. That's not crazy. That is accepting his situation, and doing what needs to be done, because trying to negotiate will just get them both killed. That's not going crazy, that's pragmatism.
"Pedro Pascal can't die, he's ballin' too hard right now..."
"Today is not the day I die." - vote for Pedro lol
Can't believe you landed Aubrey Plaza
Joel killed the guy in the basement and knocked the other out outside the house and then a third that was lured in by his buddy on the ground.
Single most terrifying “monster” of the season.
I could be wrong, because a few reactors have come to the same conclusion you did, but I don't think *David* got more food than the rest of the people. They were already in the middle of eating when he arrived with the venison. At least the way I saw it, they all had to stop until he got his food and then they waited for him to pray and _then_ they started up again. 🤷🏼♂️
You could tell that everyone else got a smaller bowl not even half full, meanwhile David had a big heaping helping of "venison".
he definitely got a larger portion
i say he got a larger portion only because they weren’t in the middle of eating when he walked in, they weren’t allowed to start eating until he sat down and took a bite first.
Out of RESPECT no one would dare eat before David, and never before the blessing of the food.
Exactly @@jasonschuler2256, _thank you._ I understand why others would think that they didn't eat until David started, but David was gone and they would have no idea when he was returning. He just happened to return *during* mealtime.
*Edit:* I'm also guessing that was one of the reasons everyone was looking so scared. Because _they were in the middle of eating_ when he returned. And then they all had to stop and wait.
A great example of "be careful what you wish for" with this episode. David's whole BS speech about being surrounded by sheep and wanting to meet somebody else with a violent heart, he got what he claims he wished for and then some; Ellie's a little ball of fury and violence on a good day (and this was far from a good day). Unfortunately for David, sometimes the thing you wish for the most is the very thing that destroys you (or in his case, chops you into small pieces)...but so far, his character has been the one most deserving of getting 86'd.
Love that they showed Joel going full-on Taken mode on the two guys he was interrogating, no remorse or even a pause from him. Joel's not a good person, as has been hinted at before in the season, and this is the first time we really see him unleashed. On top of that, the need to save a child is a hell of a motivator, and they captured that beautifully in this episode.
"What TOWN?!?"
Seriously though folks brown the (non-human) meat you are using before you make a soup or stew as the Maillard reaction is your friend.

It's OK Babygirl. 😪❤
Ellie is infected but immune, which means she doesn’t produce symptoms, which means she doesn’t produce the symptoms to be contagious.
That's not quite what that means. People can be asymptomatic with a contagious disease and still infect other people. In Ellie's case she isn't carrying a contagious disease. She is carrying a mutated variant that formed a symbiotic relationship with the host rather than a parasitic relationship. If she was able to infect other people, they would be infected with the same symbiotic variant that Ellie is carrying.

I was cool that the tall beard guy she got in the neck was the guy who plays Joel in the game. And her mom plays her part as well.
i also thought ellie put on a voice to intimidate them over the deer. but apparently it was just horribly cold and she could not control her voice.
I think you must've misunderstood am interview. Her voice very clearly changes tone from threatening to sincere when she asks for medicine and then back to the threatening facade after.
She _did_ put on a voice.
To be fair to Arianna, "taboo" is exactly the right word for cannibalism. Not sure why Maple thinks taboo is lightweight.
cause people don't use that word a lot for extreme cases and mostly for things like butt stuff. if you type in taboo you probably get porn results
I will always watch Ariana react to anything 😍

Kind of annoys me when they decided to change David and his group to being Christians. Even more so that seeing a group of christians in a show like this immediately screams cult and the Pastor is usually a pedophile since that is all they are portrayed as anymore. Not a christian myself but its one of the few remaining stereotypes that seems to be perfectly ok to still do. David and his group didn't need the whole "I think my leader is doing gods work therefore I will follow him" implication, they were simply bad people in the game.
baby girl. that's how that goes.

I don't agree with the whole "they attacked them" argument. If the story was following the group on their trek from Pittsburgh to Colorado, people would view it differently. About maybe a total of 20 people in the group? Women and children. Starving. And the 4 men went to the college looking for supplies to help keep their families alive. At least one with a teenage daughter. And they went there armed only with baseball bats. One of them saw two people with, at a minimum, guns and a horse that could feed his people for two weeks. He also doesn't know if they could be part of a larger group that could threaten all of his people. We know Joel has killed innocent people before. Tommy even left him because of it. But people just excuse that as "you do what you have to do in an apocalypse"
Also, Ellie is just extremely lucky. After she broke that guy's finger, he knew right then he was going to kill her. He could have just shot her through the bars. Then, honestly, if you're going to chop someone up with a cleaver, you don't do it with them alive and fully clothed. And if you were just about to chop her up, why wouldn't you do it even if she yelled that she was infected? They wouldn't get infected by eating her, because 9nce they started cutting her, they would see the cordyceps in her body and not use it.
Lol, end of creepy comment.
They were eating people, numbnuts. This isn’t the walking dead “if we were following negan’s group first rick would be the bad guy” type of scenario. They were literally eating people and attacked Joel and Ellie for meat. They fed that girl her own dad. There’s no scenario in which we, the audience, would’ve viewed them as an innocent group out looking for supplies.
@@jasonschuler2256 So, even more reason for David to have just gone ahead and chopped part of her off after she yelled that she was infected. Why stop then? Why give her that power? Why show weakness or fear at that point? Chop off an arm. Show her that nothing she says or does will stop him.
@@jasonschuler2256 it's really more logical. Saying he would stop doing something he was doing solely out of hubris and sadism is rationalization.
