It's like watching my son grow up before my eyes, but then he ends up more successful than me so I resent him and don't invite him to Thanksgiving dinner anymore, he's probably too busy plowing his girlfriend in the Bahamas or some shit that could've been me to you know if I had the chance!!
    But yeah good vido Gillius

There's some thing about these time capsules of otaku culture and seeing how it has evolved over the years. Before hand, The two pieces of media that I would have recommend as time capsules are Otaku no Video(the 80's and early 90's) and Lucky Star and Genshiken(late 00's to early 2010's). I hadn't considered Midori days as one of those time capsules but really thinking about, it's the perfect series that represents the late 90's to early 00' era of otaku culture. I wonder which anime series would represent Otaku culture in the late 2010's to early 20's.

I think Comic Party is a pretty entertaining snapshot of early Comicket culture.

Already in two videos, the quality of your presentation when it comes to producing a video essay has increased hugely. Love it like usual

Genuinely fascinating video, Gil! I’m impressed by how many aspects of the show you managed to highlight in such a brief video, and the way you combined the manga with the anime and then connected it to live footage (not to mention the editing rhythm) actually made me feel like I was back in high-school watching some old show on a Friday afternoon - I suppose that’s quite fitting considering what the video deals with.

This was probably the best anime analysis video I’ve seen in a while. Superb editing, excellent scoring, and analysis that’s intellectually sophisticated but not inaccessible. It feels like I can tell that there’s layers and layers of thought behind what you put out there but that you gave me just enough to hook me in without drowning me in the details. It’s like you drip fed me just enough information to let my mind wander freely without overwhelming me with your thought process. Thank you, man. And shout out to all the otakus out there who refuse to grow up and become cogs in the neoliberal machine.

Idk if you've seen it, but in the TV run of Densha Otoko, Densha states that despite his efforts, he was unable to give up being an otaku and graduate. However, at the end of the series, I was still left with this feeling that he somewhat conformed to what would be considered "normal". Because of that, I can agree on Densha Otoko having a conservative narrative. As for Midori Days, I only saw a bit of it in the past, but I remember the right hand jokes people would post lol.

I can't help but find it funny that this is actually labeled the "progressive" stance. Like to most Leftwing critics of Otakudom this exactly what they hate about it.

That's fair. But the concept of the Otaku graduation is drenched in conservative cultures. The desire to make Otaku into marketable young men is born from their status as "good consumers". So not only is the concept of Otaku graduation a capitalist one but it's also steeped in gender roles (e.g get married, have children). So my reason for calling Midori Days "progressive" is that it went against that concept at the height of it's relevancy.
