    In the C-17, the Aircraft Commander (AC) may sit in either seat. Unlike other aircraft, both pilots are qualified from either seat. During missions, we often swap seats in order to work on our proficiency. In addition, the highest ranking individual on the aircraft is not always the Aircraft Commander. I have seen 1st Lts as Aircraft Commanders while C-17 qualified General Officers are on-board.

    If any of you know what a MAC flight is they are extremely awesome, I was able to fly in one of these bad boys twice at the age of 8, even went into the cockpit, even got to fly in a KC-10 while it refueled a C-17, what an amazing experience MAC flights are.

    The power cutting off in the beginning was because of an over heat in the avionics. sometimes while on the ground in hot places the ground power cant supply enough cool air to keep it cool. The C-17 has powered flaps ie: use engine thrust for some lift. the application of power just prior to touch down decreases the decent and makes a very smooth landing as shown here. Also this flight wasnt generated just to haul some passengers around as they may have been on there as an incentive/orientation flight or as Space A travel. Space A allows members of military to fly on a plane going to a destination if there is room on the plane. The plane was already going on the flight anyway so adding a few people doesnt cost that much more at all. not 100,000 like the one guy stated

    ***** This flight has a training flight written all over it. LT in the cockpit with LT Col in FO seat. Aerial refueling. The LT was probably earning his qualifications for aerial refueling with the C-17. They often offer incentive rides to top performers in the Wing to come check it out since they are doing it already. This was not a flight just to take 10 people up in the air. This was a training/qualification flight that was utilized by some people to see some views. Aerial refueling is a very vital part of our air power.

      Agreed...Lt taking forever to get to contact position, going way left and then moving way aft in the envelope after he hooks up, with the Lt Col's hands at the base of the throttle. Definitely some training going on there.

    • @c17nav
      @c17nav 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the C-17 and other military transports, the terms "captain" and "first officer" are not used to differentiate between the pilots of the left seat versus right seat. "Captain" is used for their rank designation only (like major, lieutenant, etc.). For procedural purposes when locations of controls (gear handle, switches, etc.) are significant, the C-17 uses "pilot" for the left seat occupant and "copilot" for the right seat occupant. When location of controls is not a factor but aircraft control is a factor, the terms "pilot flying" (PF) and "pilot not flying" (PNF) or "pilot monitoring" (PM) are used. The PF may relinquish control of the aircraft to the PNF/PM at any time. Based on experience levels or mission directives, the occupant of either seat may be the aircraft commander who is responsible for safe and effective mission accomplishment. The military ranks of the pilots or the designation of which pilot is the aircraft commander do not dictate who is in which seat or is in control of the aircraft.

    Can anyone please explain the particular landing technique he used?
    right below 50ft he increased power...

    • @codzomz
      @codzomz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably just a sheering wind... He did that just after the "50" call out was made, so chances are the headwind they had sheered off to almost nothing due to either terrain or a tree line... So he had to increase power to reduce his decent rate and avoid a very rough landing...
      Source: I'm an e175/190 pilot...

    • @kinsley2108
      @kinsley2108 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      jasmenter C-17's flare with power, instead of stick, it allows the jetwash to deflect off the flaps and provide more lift, allowing the aircraft to have a lower groundspeed on touchdown.

    • @frankmacleod9576
      @frankmacleod9576 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Your snarky comment is ill informed. The C-17 was designed and primarily built by McDonnell Douglas. It's only affiliated with Boeing due to the merger of Boeing and MD.
      The C-17 does not have a side stick controller like the Scarebus. Rather, it has a center stick controller because it was determined that a the sidestick would not provide the leverage required to fly the aicraft via the C-17's mechanical back-up control system (a mandated safety feature) and because Air Force evaluation pilots universally preferred the centerstick. Only the upper portion of the stick column
      rotates laterally while the entire column is displaced for and aft for elevator control, ensuring no interference with the pilot's legs. Also, the sticks are interconnected and back driven for situational awareness as to the control inputs of the other pilot.
