    Having watched many of your other videos I've just stumbled on this one. Your friendly, likeable style hasn't changed over the years, but the quality of production is now excellent. Great to have now seen the first one. Keep it up, it saves me having to go out! :-)

    Simon... excellent video. You covered the pack well and did some great modifications to it. Looks like it holds quite a bit of stuff and I like the "clean" layout of it. I am finding as the years go by that I am put off now by the overengineered equipment with excessive bells and whistles. Probably how I ended up getting a Karrimor SF Sabre 45. Simple, solid with less to go wrong in the bush. Thank you for review. Some good kit there too. As far as waterproofing the pack, probably a poncho would be a good way to go. Covers you and the pack. I have a US military poncho (heavy but solid and can be a ground cloth or tarp too) and I also have a Snugpak Patrol Poncho (much lighter and it has sleeves too).

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, like you, I’m a big fan of solid, but simple equipment - I have some modern bits of kit, but being Uber-lightweight, they are also flimsy - I certainly wouldn’t use them for bushcraft activities!! I have a British issue 58pat poncho, but to be honest it doesn’t come out much - I should use it more often, as you say, they are very versatile! Thanks for watching, Atb, Simon.

    Hi Simon, just a FYI: some viewers, including me, cannot handle speech with background music. Some of the tones in the music you have chosen for this video were especially disturbing. I had to close the video at 0:49, as I was getting a headache.
    Please consider not using background music when you are talking.
    Thanks

      +P.H. Rankin Hansen - Hi and thanks for watching (albeit just for the start!). Yep, sorry about the music - it was my first video and thus a bit of an experiment- you are not the first to comment on the music. I always take on board what people suggest - after all the videos are for you! I have since cut out the music and only really use for my intro and outro, and perhaps a bit put in here and now for effect. Please don’t be put off my other videos - hopefully they’ll be more watchable for you. It’s all a learning curve this video production stuff. All the best, Simon.

    Great first video Simon, good job mate. It's took me a while to watch but I got there in the end. I was shocked to see how much gear you pulled out of that pack, especially when you had it all displayed around the pack. Nice modifications too. Keep up the good work, good job. Atb, Paul.

      +Paul Embling - Thanks Paul, it’s a bit rough round the edges and the music gets in everyone’s nerves - and mine!! But, you live and you learn! It’s a great pack - carries a lot of gear for only 35 litres (supposedly!)

    First video as short a time back as Jan 2017. See how your Channel is growing. Back in the day, we didn't have dry bags as such and I always used to line my Bergen with a black Bin Bag that was far larger than the capacity of the Rucksack/Bergen itself and that also could provide an emergency Bivi or shelter. However, what always concerned me and something you didn't mention is WEIGHT. I would love to know what 3 litres of water (3kgs) plus 3 days food and all that kit including the pack itself weighs in at?
    I'd love to know how you sewed on those side pouches - by hand or with a machine and in either case, what kind of thread and needle? I have packs where the side pouches are only sewn on two sides and this allows me to slide an Axe down one side and my Machete down the other, but my terrain and circumstances are different from yours in the UK for the work that I do around the Smallholding.
    Was a great first video albeit, for me, the background music was a little too loud and distracted slightly from your presentation, but hey ho, this is not Hollywood.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers! Yes, I learned a lot from making that video! The music being one!!
      I’ve not weighed the pack, but it is heavier than a lot of modern rucksacks that’s for sure, but not noticeably so - I’ve used the pack for long hikes carrying food, water and winter gear and it was comfortable, they weight being distributed well and centre of balance was good for me.
      I sewed the pouches on using a machine - with the pack off the frame - it was tight and involved folding and wrestling with the fabric a fair bit but it was manageable. I’ve since spoked to somebody else who unpicked all the stitching on his, so as to make the sewing easier - then re stitched it!!

    This is Simon's first TH-cam video, and it's apparent that he is a master teacher who presents his subject matter with BBC-quality narration. He is obviously an accomplished and experienced woodsman who knows his stuff.
    It was nice of his daughter to help him with the filming and probably other technical aspects of posting the video.
    Sidenote: at 9:04, it was interesting that Simon packed a catapult (slingshot) and ammo. Perhaps for hunting?

    Good video! You presented very well. The music got on my wick a bit (maybe make it a bit quieter, or none at all) but overall a great video. I've liked and subscribed :)
    I've watched most of MCQs bushcraft videos - he puts a lot of effort in and it shows! I've chosen a lot of my kit based on his reviews. My LK35 arrived this morning along with the webbing kit from Military Mart. I didn't realise the Swedish pouches were smaller! I'm pleased I watched you video before I went to the effort of sewing them on! I've got the stainless steel water canteen from Pathfinder so it needs to be able to take it!
    Thanks for the vid!

      +magicdrshoon - Thanks for the feedback and thanks for the sub! Yes, I totally agree about the audio on this video, it was my first one and a bit of an experiment!! I've since cut the music right down and cut it out for spoken kits and I think it's improved things!!
      As with you, I've been inspired by lots of Mikes videos and have bought kit based on his recommendations too! I think your pathfinder bottle may fit in a plce utility pouch, but not sure, otherwise there are a few pouches out there designed for the 1l Nalgene bottle, that would fit for sure! Good luck with the mods mate, and thanks again! Atb, Simon.

    Hi Simon. I see we a share a passion for drybags! I have not found a suitable brand for my purposes yet. I bought a 5-set of Aquaquest and two of them popped at the seams while stuffing down clothes. I have another one that i put my tarp in and strap on the outside of my backpack, but that one got punctured by branches or something of that nature.Are you satisfied with yours? Is there a brand you'd recommend? Thanks, take care!

      +Wild Camping Greece - Hi Maurice, thanks for watching! Yes, I do love my drybags!! Most of mine are cheap ones made by Karrimor and Highlander, but I also have some by a Brand called Alpkit, that are very good - ripstop silicone coated nylon. For maximum strength though, you cannot beat Ortlieb, I've never punctured one yet!! Atb, Simon.

    Thanks for your first one, Simon! I saw your first vid last. It's visible that since then you got way less hectic. Crackling fire and a good steak is always soothing us. As a former teacher you did even your first vid very well. The only thing I missed was a close up of the cordage locking system. If you still have this rucksack you could do a closeup at one of your next vids.
    And yes, the music was already mentioned. I like techno and death metal to calm down - the music of this vid instead drives me crazy. I think the best music overall is silence. I once has been on a pass height in Norway with a stunning view over the mountains and no wind blows and it was absolutely silent there - only spiced up with the dripping of water from a creek at the other side of the valley underneath. This kind of silence is the best.
    Keep on with your vids. I like every single one of them.

    Just got one of these.
    Its like the Lavvu of rucksacks. Personally I would have preferred a canvas one, but the reality is that I mostly camp in Scotland so it would be almost permanently wet for the entire duration. Factoring in the added weight of being wet, and the risk of rot, I went for the synthetic one. Beautiful piece of kit though. Its basically an anti-Alice pack. Same essential design and features, only the LK35 has form and shape, were as the Alice pack is like a giant scrotum on your back.

    love the vid simon and have subbed. i've had my LK35 for a year or two and am about to start modding, a few questions, if you'd be kind enough!
    where did you get the PLCE pouches?
    how long did it take to sew them on?
    and lastly, did you use a sail needle, awl, particular type of thread?
    boring as, but seriously any help woud be greatly appreciated!
    thanks, Rory

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rory Byrne - Hi Rory, thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! I got the pouches from eBay, there was a seller who was selling them as pairs, it stated used but mine were brand new when they arrived! I used a sewing machine to stitch them on, just a domestic machine with a normal needle, but I used the thickest zuckerman polyester thread I could get, not sure of the number or thickness, I'll check when I get home! It was fiddly getting the rucksack through the machine, but just about manageable! ( you'll obviously need to remove the frame). It took an evening to do all the stitching. Hope this helps!! Atb, Simon.

    Nice job with the pack frame with the shoulder straps and kidney belt also with side pouches what did you use to sew them with also if you want to water proof the pack and pouches use bees wax and linseed oil heat it slowly melting the bees wax to a liqued for use equal amount of linseed oil together and using a paint brush ( natural hair )paint it on the pack in a fairly heavy layer covering the entire pack on the outside let dry then use a heat gun or hair dryer and reheat it on the pack it will soak into the material and bond with it ( canvas only ) and will fill all holes made from sewing and water proof at the same time also as you are heating and bonding the water proof agent to the fabric it will allow you to make sure you did not miss any spots it works fantastic

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Robert - good tip for canvas! The LK35 is available in canvas, but mine is cordura with a PU coating on the inside - the stitching holes haven’t leaked really - not enough to worry about anyway. I used a standard general purpose Gutermann thread - has held up well, but others use waxed thread in a heavier gauge. Cheers, Simon

    • @simonablokeinthewoods

      Hi Simon, Thanks. The Drybag is an Ortlieb bag, a small one, im not sure of the size in litres but it measures 600mm (open) by 200mm diameter. The side pockets are British army PLCE utility pouches, and the hip belt is made by Mil-tec. I got both the pouches and the belt off Ebay.

      +AC Bushcraft - Thank you! Great packs - I love mine, it’s had lots of use and is absolutely bombproof! Yes, I used webbing utility straps through the molle, fixing it to the frame, has held up well, paracord would probably work fine too, I just had a load of straps - it’s adjustable that way too!
