Had a female boss once who fit the diagnosis perfectly..... a touch of psychopathy too. She'd pick on staff members selectively to bully in subtle ways

It’s the link between narcissism and psychopathy that needs to be considered.

All psychopaths are narcissists, not all narcissists are psychopaths.

A narcissist might call me a narcissist to shift blame, showing lack of self-awareness and a need to project, which people with NPD are known to do.

Narcissism is only a fancy made-up term for a set of traits in human beings that can make life miserable for themselves alongside everyone else in society. All sorts of quirks of human nature can also do this but genuine narcissism and psychopathy apparently look similar on brain scans. If you were able to take a brain scan from Genghis Khan, well he must have been one hell of a psychopath.

I was mates with a guy from the US for a while. He was always in everyone's face courting confrontation, pushing his opinions and condemning those who didn't see things his way. Always talking himself up and comparing his strengths to others. I called him a narcissist or that he had narcissistic tendencies and he dropped contact with me. That's what narcissists do, once you call them out for it, apparently. Or maybe he was just an everyday American 😆

This interview just touches on Narcissistic Personality Behaviour (NPD). There are a few types, overt, covert, malignant etc. Lacking empathy is a sure sign. Then in a relationship they exert specific behaviour. This sometimes comes in these stages. Love bombing, devaluation, smear campaigns, discarding and then trying to Hoover the person back and the cycle continues. It's a very dark personality and is very destructive. Victims are all sources of supply to a Narcissist. They view people as appliances to be used, until they have no more use for them. They play mind games as well to keep their prey guessing which causes cognitive dissonance. This can also cause trauma bonds and peptide addiction for the victims in serious abuse. There are quite a few red flags. They love power and control. Your gut is your best friend here. Listen to it and run a mile!!

Very good bridget7705. That's a pretty accurate succinct summary of the main traits of a narcissist. They can be incredibly destructive people, and with whom a "normal" healthy relationship is virtually impossible.

I'm a vulnerable narcissist, and honestly, we're the worst. At least the grandiose ones are charming. But understanding what this means for me has helped a lot. Just general mindfulness in always directing interest towards the person you're speaking to has been key to compensating for my personality issues. Whatever personality issues you might have, with human fluidity you can become a somewhat different person, but you have to put the work in.

This has been a very enlightening interview.
Sometimes we need to hold our judgement at arms-length.
This is a complex issue and to split hairs is a waste of time.
At a stretch, I would say that we have only scratched the surface.

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance. They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others.

They belong to what is regarded in psychiatry as the Dark Trio e.g. The narcissist, the psychopath and the Machiavellian the common trait is their lack of empathy for fellow human beings. Another major characteristic is their haughty behaviour. The narcissist acts likes he is the central actor in a play, if you don't conform or perform to the script then you are out, game over, hence the development of the contemporary description "Main actor syndrome".
Oh, and why they so often appear in positions of power or management: It's like making jam, the scum always rise to the surface.

Whatś the difference between a Narcissist & a Psychopath? The Narcissist cannot see heś gotta problem while the Psychopath knows heś gotta problem but does not care.

As with most things to do with the human body, narcissism is on a sliding scale. Children and teens are narcissistic by nature, average people act narcissistically every day, but usually can acknowledge and remedy those actions.
It is when someone's every interactions with every other human in their life is narcissistic, and they are unaware and unable to accept any responsibility for their part in the interactions, that it is considered Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
So in everyday life someone can be narcissistic to you but not be a narcissist. This is an extremely misunderstood topic. So many buzzwords being used on social media as insults when they are actually psychological terms with meanings that are definable.
Very damaging to people affected by narcissistic abuse, which physically affects the victims brain and involves a lot more that someone just 'being a jerk' a few times in a row.
Dr Ramani is a good resource.

Hello The Platform (and host Sean Plunket). I have been really enjoying your content the past few months I've been watching. I am asking as an interested watcher (never viewed your content outside TH-cam) and kiwi, that you please upload full videos of all interviews as well as host segments here or on another channel. This could be a huge additional source of revenue for you as well as entertainment for your viewers. I assume many other viewers are in the same situation as me, and having interviews cut short before the end of a speakers piece is quite disappointing. Thank you for the content. Keep on keeping on. Sincerely, A Kiwi from NZ
