I too was born and brought up there. I remember North Street - I used to buy electronic components from Speedy’s Television Repair shop. Before any of the redevelopment it used to be on the adjacent corner of the road to Murphy’s - my Dad bought his live bate for fishing there. Jenkin’s Chemist i went to buy chemistry bits & pieces like test tubes and Copper Sulphate. - can still remember the chemical sell of the shop! My had earn pocket money was saved up for these excursions! I also remember South Street being redeveloped - what a disappointment! When Iowa’s told what they planned to do I was quite excited to think that Gosport was going to get a shopping Mall! I wish they never had bothered! I left Gosport in ‘69 to start what I think has been an interesting....
Hello 👋 , I was brought up in Gosport and I’ve seen GBC slowly rip the place up and what a s ...t hole it is now . A mate of mine said he was going to come down an visit gods port ... I replied no point nothing there ! No entertainment all gone , no cinema , no open air swimming pool , most of the pups turned into flats and now even the bingo hall is shut down , probably be turned into flats or something crap . That’s Gosport now ... rubbish place ! Wonder how long it will be before Browndown will be up to the highest bidder an be turned into a industrial estate an housing !? Rant over . Ps no wonder there is so many people with problems, nothing else to do . Kids why u go out an do something ... do what ???
@@bobdigi500 , yeah the place is rubbish ! Just drove past the old bingo hall at criterion an there is a sign hanging of the wall saying it was up redevelopment for residential property … lol ! Could of turned it back to a cinema or some sort of entertainment .
@@bobdigi500 theres little entertainment here because we have a ferry to portsmouth or easy access to whitely/Eastleigh/hedge end and Southampton. Businesses don’t thrive in gosport because its too easy to go into one of the cities or to an outlet centre. Rowner looks better now but sadly Forton has taken the brunt of that. As i kid i always used to go over to gunwharf with mates and go bowling or arcade or cinema if we had money from paper rounds or parents, its 30 min away as a kid. If we had no money it was football down elson or privett park after school. Things aint that bad here when you consider its links. Its always been a satellite town to portsmouth and the navy. We do have a pretty decent leisure centre now and the ice rink is still open, we have many junior football clubs and a big rugby club, two golf courses and two sailing clubs, as a kid in the summer i was swimming down hardway every eve it was high tide, theres stuff to do for kids. Lets face it tho, the councils plans are to make the centre point of gosport next to fort brockhurst; already making traffic worse and its not finished yet.

Completely agree. No entertainment, crappy high Street and a local council that is as useless as a chocolate teapot.

Also i do believe browndown is protected for nature which is something out of the councils hands.
