Stewart has described the similarities between Reggae and a rhythm Ballide (don't know how to spell it) that he was exposed to growing up in Beirut. The muted snare and high tuned Tom accents definitely have a middle Eastern hand drum vibe going on.
I remember driving to the Hartford Civic Center on the interstate and about a half mile out from the downtown exit were a couple of guys holding "I need Police concert tickets" signs for that night's concert. WTF? I had planned to buy a couple of tickets at the civic center from a scalper. Oh no, I wasn't missing this concert. Got my tickets. Paid dearly for them, lol.
A trio of pure genius and fiery enthusiasm and blazing dexterity ! The police are one of my favorite bands . The music they made in a short time span is legendary and will always be special !
gdub454 Stewart had his style for sure ! However the legendary studio drummer Vinnie colaiuta has some similarities with Stewart in their playing , both are very polyrhythmic drummers . It's no surprise Vinnie has been stings drummer for years on tour . Vinnie was frank Zappa's favorite drummer

I say this as a drummer, pianist idolized copeland a while back when i was in a police coverband
backthan i was 11 years and the biggest police fan of all times. and as they entered the stage it was like birthday, x mas and making love all in one. this was a great concert- powerfull, experimental, harmonic, and all three in best conditions.back in those days something miraculous like this band just could happen, cause our minds/souls were still in the right places and not "translated" into digital grip of a puplic authority wich is designed by headfucked nobodies/nerds, at least ourselfs!!!
Andy and Stewart make this look like pure art! Listen to th sound of those strings and the timing of that drumming. No put down to Sting but he got enough of the publicity. These two guys are geniuses! I loved this group then, and I still have all of their shit, in constant rotation!
