  • Headwaters Down is an award-winning documentary about the James River. Part 1 explores the first ~40 miles of the Upper James River, from the headwaters to the mountain town of Buchanan, VA.
    🗓 13 Days | 🛶 250 Miles | 🎥 3 Episodes
From the serene headwaters in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Fall Line white-water in Richmond, VA, Headwaters Down is the story of the James River told through the eyes of five friends. Once the most polluted waterway in America, the James is reborn as a monument to a river’s innate resilience and a testament to the incredible progress we can achieve when we focus on revitalizing, not commoditizing, our natural treasures.

Thanks for showcasing what the river is all about. You want to hear a rarity? My ex-wife is to blame for getting the city of Lynchburg to clean up their combined sewer overflows which were the 2nd oldest in the country at the time. Thanks to Joy Foster the James is much cleaner and the Blackwater creek has been restored where otters and even mink can be found. A rave about an ex, how's that for positive transformation? That was 30 years ago and the James is rebounding with species not seen for a long time. Keep up the good work guys. Without nature life isn't worth living.

I'm so excited to get into this series. I grew up in central Virginia and in college i planned out a canoe trip from the cowpasture headwaters of the James all the way to Jamestown, even using a canoe sailing rig on the bigger water. I never took the trip all in one go. I did the sections piecemeal over the years. i can't wait to see how you guys do and how far you get. To say I'm jealous is an understatement!
