Climbing 2,500ft on tired legs carrying 20kg to bag a mountain sunrise | Wild camping is THE BEST!

- After months away from poles and pegs, I FINALLY made it back out! Hoisting the Hilleberg Soulo up in the Black Mountains in Wales was the perfect way to give myself a bit of a test again. It also gave me the opportunity to try out a few new bits of kit I've picked up recently.
I've released a couple of equipment review vids recently in the absence of any camping trips, and I'll continue to make videos about my gear every now and then as I like to share videos about the kit I use. This latest trip into Wales really reminded me why I love getting out there and spending time in the great outdoors. Anyone else recently made a return to camping after some time away from it? I'd love to hear why you took a break, and how that first camp felt!
Thanks for watching,
James.

Insulated booties, and trousers are absolute game changers in winter
Some trousers might be on their way! 👀 Can't wait to live your life! 😄
I'm still watching, but great to see you out again James 🤟🤙👍
Thanks a lot, Rich. Really good to be back out there ❤I'm glad you remembered who I am! 😅 James.
What a cracking sunrise
So rewarding after a climb and a cloudy night 😍👌
Ah mate awesome to see you back out and blessed with an unreal sunrise !!!! Me and DD loved it mate.... also the gear looked class especially the lantern !! Top class as always mate ATB Simon
That sunrise was a peach! I'm glad the cloud drifted back in temporarily otherwise it would've been hard to tear ourselves away from that golden orb and pack up the tents! Thanks for checking out the vid - you're up next! 😉 Cheers bro 🍻 James.
Great vid James
Stunning spot !
And that sunrise was stunning.
Atb Graham
Thanks Graham! Our eventual pitch location ended up being only a few hundred metres from my freezing cold camp earlier in the year, but it was a completely different experience this time! Thanks for tuning in 😊 James.
The Hille flaps and jingles all night long😂
Oh I took those jingle bells off all the zips after the first night in it! What a racket 🤣
That sky in the morning was just stunning! Thanks for the tip on the booties, I've just ordered a pair 😁 great to see you back out 👌another fab video 👍
Ah I know. Don't you just love it when the weather forecast holds true? Waking up to sunlight like that is the absolute dream! Check you out with the booties! I just know I'm going to love mine, and I may have ordered some more insulated clothing to join them 👀 Thanks a lot Kim. I'll try to get out in under 5 months next time!! James.
Great to see you back, James. 👍🏼
It was about bloody time, hey? Thanks Ste 👊
Lovely video James. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks Arnstein. I hope you are well 🙂 James.
What a magnificent sunrise!👏🏻
Ohhh yeahhhh 😍
Thumbs up, lovely morning to walk back to the car. Lovely to see the Grwyne Fechan and was slightly jealous when I saw that misty sunrise. Still not fussed on that gas latern I'll be honest. Good mileage James. I cut back right from Pen y Gadair down to Main Llwyd and drop back into the valley. atb Al
Thanks Al. It felt like we had about ten sunrises, with it vanishing and re-emerging every few minutes. I think gas lanterns will be a bit Marmite - much like electric pumps - but I feel happier about using the gas lantern now that I've given it a go. I look forward to trying lots of different routes around the Black Mountain in the years to come. Thank you for your part in introducing me to them 🙂 James.
Good to see you back out again mate!
Hope you're good.
Adge
Cheers Adge! I intend on having a shorter break after this camp! Hope you're doing well too ✌️ James.
You got a great morning for it, first decent sunrise for a while here in Wales. Walk up looked nice and gentle as well. I'll have to visit the Black Mountains again at some point.
Yeah I'm really glad the weather followed the forecast for us. Absolutely dazzling sunrise! It was a relentless but gentle climb - just what my weedy legs needed 😂
Love my fire maple candle. It lives in the van though
Oh cool. Yeah I reckon they're more suited to a camper van, but I did like the effect it had inside my tent!
First!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Bulldog in the house!!! 👊
A decent tenty intro bro. A windy one but that set up could take the full force of a gale any day. A nice gas light there but how much juice does it drink? This reminded me of a camp I did on top of Pen Y Gadair Fawr with my dear late twin brother Paul before they chopped the forest. It was May and snowed. It made for an interesting time. A fantastic sunrise it has to be said and Waun Fach played ball. Awesome! Well, good going. All the best. Mark P.S I recently did a great camp up that way - on my channel if interested with a brew. Be good to hear from you. No thumbs screws. Peace.
Yes I've laid confidently inside that tent with 50 mph winds doing their best to separate poles from nylon. It's a tank! I believe the lanterns claims 4 grams of gas per hour, but I haven't verified that, and it'll vary depending on how big you set the flame, of course.
What a strange experience, having snow in May! Fun memories 😊 I've got your video playing now. I camped up on the Cat's Back earlier this year as it happens. I've stayed over in the Black Mountains quite a few times this year actually, thinking back! Thank for watching 🙏🏻 James.
@@joinmeoutdoors 'A tank.' I like that James. Yeah, safe as houses! Re-the gas light it's OK for an overnighter then. Multi day it might use up to much gas. Yeah, May. It was as fresh as. Ah, a sweet memory. Hey, good on - the Cats Back is a goodun looking out over Herefordshire. As for the Black Mountains I know I've enjoyed and commented on a few. A pleasure. Have a great weekend.
Love the torch! Was there any heat benefit do you think?
Good isn't it? Really hard to tell when it comes to heat. There's definitely a placebo effect going on, as it looks as toasty and warm. I don't think it would have a big impact as the heat will probably just escape out of the open tent door above. It certainly won't make it any colder in there though!
Set of earplugs should come with the soulo
There's an idea. Wouldn't want to push the price up any further though! 😆
@@joinmeoutdoors My friend wont use his soluo without them, Weightless method of good nights sleep!
20kg pack and wipes the tent to save weight😂
Haha I want to take some scales with me to see just how much water the tent holds. I bet it's over 100 grams though! 😁
Ha windy wasn’t it, I wasn’t too far away up in the Berwyns for three days backpacking no problem in the Helm 1 tho deffo a bit chilly on the last night.
Looks like you had better weather than me surprisingly.
Oh nice, I haven't been up there. Was it good walking and camping? Yeah we had really good weather. The wind wasn't overly strong with us, just didn't really stop!
@@joinmeoutdoors yep the area is well worth a trip there are a good handful of national trails that run through the area for extended trips and more than enough stuff for day walks.
I’d recommend spending a few nights looking at OS explorer 255 and 256.
Hope you manage to get out more over the next 12 months 😊
That sounds good. North Wales feels like a long way from Somerset - particularly at this time of year with fewer daylight hours! I'll have to get the Berwyns on the list though, thanks David 👍
