According to UK news the Scholz call was planned between Scholz and the G7 leaders before Scholz called. Putin was given the option to withdraw from Ukraine and negotiate in good faith or face consequences. Since Putin was not interested the next step was to allow Ukraine to use Western weapons to hit russian soil. Basically the lifting of the ban using Western weapons on russian soil was the direct result of Scholz' call.

Artur, I understand your criticism of the Biden’s reactionary approach, but one thing that you can probably notice in your comments section is that the Europeans will take any opportunity to spit in the US. It’s this constant negativity why there are so many Americans who don’t see why the US should help when the help is unappreciated. Americans don’t want to be dragged into another war, which is something many Europeans would probably welcome because they know that the U.S. could easily defeat Russia. I’ve got family and friends who are in the military, and the last thing I want is to see them put in harm’s way for a war that the U.S. has no obligation to help Ukraine defend. If Ukraine was a NATO member, it wouldn’t be a different story, but that’s not the case.

About ‘king time. It’s all well and good giving Ukraine just enough weapons to defend itself but if they can’t hit targets in Russia to stop them from attacking then this war is just going to carry on and on. The allies couldn’t have won ww2 without the constant bombing of Germany destroying their capacity to fight. And that’s classic bully behaviour from Russia, crying about escalation when Ukraine gets the slightest chance to do what they’ve been doing with impunity for nearly 2 years. Like having thousands of North Koreans fight their battles for them isn’t an escalation already.

The RF now have an alternative rail line operating in the southern Ukraine land corridor. The bridge was weakened and is now less important or of lower priority. It’s also very well protected by air defence. Blowing the bridge would facilitate that air defence being redeployed to protect other more relevant targets.

I expected some limitations, but the whole point of using western weapons in Russia is to strike deep enough to hold Russians at risk far away from the Ukraine border and to actually inflict consequential damage. There should be none of those, but limiting it to Kursk means the administration deserves no applause for this, they did as little as they possibly could.
