How To Mount an Acrylic Paper Painting onto Canvas: Step-by-step, real time, with commentary!

  • A simple How-To video that demonstrates how I mount an acrylic painting that has been done on paper, onto a canvas. It is a solid, permanent method that I've been using for ten years.
    I use Bondcrete as a glue. (Maybe try any white wood glue that dries clear)
    I water it down to about 70% glue - 30% water.
    I paint it on both contact surfaces, place the paper in place, and then add a final coat over the top of the painting. This helps to seal the edges and toughens the surface.
    I suggest you try this on a small painting at first! My original efforts were on huge 120cm wide works, and I was often in a mess! But I've never lost a painting using this method.
    And I do use it for my own watercolour paintings, but I'm reluctant to recommend this, as the paint can loosen and smear when you are applying the Bondcrete. But if you can spray the solution on first, or fix the paint with a suitable fixer, that should hold the paint in place. Please experiment and let me know in the comments if you have success.

    Wonderful! ❤ Questions: would this work with paper that is not very thick? I have several, large mono-prints on pastel paper…rather thin paper. I wouldn’t want it to buckle and wrinkle. I would assume the canvas needs to be a good quality sturdy canvas; not an inexpensive one that tends to be thinner. Would that matter? When adhering paper to a board , or collage paper to a surface, artists often use a squeegee or Catalyst wedge to smooth, and get out air bubbles. Do you think you are doing something similar with the brush? (Also, I am considering adding some pastel to these, spraying with fixative, then mounting. Would that work?)

      @shirleypeters  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The canvas is cheap. It’s not important. Thin paper might not return to its original form after being wet, so I would experiment with small sample papers.

    Wow that's so beautiful Shirley 😍! The colors are evocative 💕 🎨. Question: for watercolor paintings... have you tried mounting and instead of bondcrete on top using wax? I'm inspired to try but wondering if you may have already done that?

    I enjoyed the video. Could this be varnished over, As well as using the bondcrete? Would there be any advantage to that, and how do you prepare for hanging. Do you use d rings and cord??? Just curious to know how others do that

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it could be varnished. Or a thicker second layer of the bondcrete. And yes, I use D rings as they don’t damage other paintings when stacked. I use cord for lighter paintings, and twisted wire for heavier works.

      They don’t show. It’s a matt finish, and there is no evidence of any surface treatment. Invisible!! Try it on a test piece.

    Can this technique be done with a watercolor painting?

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No and yes. I have done it, and I liked that it slightly re-arranged the paint. But watercolour is not waterproof. So expect some streaking. I suggest you experiment on old works.

    • @shirleypeters
      @shirleypeters  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not sure. The trick is for it to absorb the glue. It might work, as the back of the paper is not varnished. Maybe just do the back, no need to do the front.

    Hi Shirley - Im curious what is the weight of your paper you did your acrylic painting on? I use acrylic ink on paper and use a lot of water, often the paper warps and it is harder to mount. THanks!

    Wow, I got a little nervous when you started painting the Bondcrete over the painting, lol. Two questions, please: does the canvas need to be primed first? I only primed and painted black the edges and sides of my canvas as my picture is on black tar paper. Also, since my painting is on tar paper, should I top it as you did with the Bondcrete? Actually, the gel medium I want to use is matte Modge Podge.
