      I agree it's a masterpiece.I like how they intended to make it like a Pixar film.They should make more of games like this.Its one of those games that strikes a perfect balance of gameplay,beautiful graphics,responsive controls,intriguing environments,cinematic feel,Great music and sound design,great characters and a story that keeps you playing to the end.Plus it's not too hard but Is challenging to play.

      I truly appreciate your positive outlook on this game I've seen a lot of people review this game and give it a lot of flack first time I was introduced to this video game was actually one of my taxi drivers who is Indian who is an extreme gamer like he loves all old school games and he let me know about this I looked it up and I was instantly in love but there were a lot of negative reviews I'm glad to see a positive one and the games that you compare this to is awesome we definitely need an updated version with better graphic user interface and graphics all around I think it will be successful if it stays true to what it is A remastered version wouldn't hurt either I'd be perfectly fine with that and comix zone

    I played this game a couple years after it came out. At the time, it was quite possibly the most beautiful game on the PS1. And beating it was one of my proudest gaming moments. It was a very fun - but difficult - game to beat. The last section had tons and tons of those shadowy creatures and was a real challenge. What a great, creative game! I think the only PS1 game to match it in shear beauty was Fear Effect (1 and 2, but I liked 1 a little better).

    this is such a nostalgic game. I remember playing it when I was younger but I could never get past a certain point and so never completed it. I must revisit it at some point! So original and imaginative that I don't think many games have matched since, I can't think of any game which has that adventure fantasy vibe and also integrates a light-hearted tone with good cinematic cut scenes and a really hard challenge!

    I've never played Limbo, although I probably will sometime soon after hearing about it here. But I indeed did get HoD for a good deal! I bought my copy from a used video game store that used to be in my local mall (they were called Software Etc.), in 2006, and I happen to still have the reciept - I payed $9.65 for it, which was the total after sales tax. The only downside, mine did not come with the 3D glasses the game originally came with, like how my brother's copy came when he bought it new when it came out, but I have several pairs, so it's not an issue for me.

      The haters are a very loud and aggressive vocal minority. Most of HoD's fanbase is quiet, secretive, and passive but the game has been featured in museum exhibits and went on to inspire games like Ico, Limbo, Little Nightmares, etc. Widely regarded as an obscure and unfairly criticized classic. You're not alone.

I wonder if the Playstation version difficulty is ramped up?

    • @finsterhund
      @finsterhund 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the game really isn't that hard. The issue with people claiming it's difficult are either playing it emulated (there's some bugs) or aren't paying attention (you need to focus on a game like this. It's not a "play while holding a conversation with a friend next to you" kinda game.

    great review. This was the game of my childhood, which kinda surprises me because it's quite grusome, especially for a 4 year old playing it..but I think that the only reason why this game wasn't as popular as it shouldve been is because the plots quite childish, but the actual gameplay isn't, therefore making it hard to find an appropriate target market. Anyway, it's 20 years since it first came out next year, and even if it's the same layout and story, to see the game being remade for ps4 or pc would be amazing.

    • @retrogameon

    I just tried this game in an emulator and came here to check out a couple reviews of it. I really liked Another World (I played the Amiga version), but I don't think this game is anywhere near as good. Right at the start, you face hoards of enemies that come out both in front of and behind you and your weapon often seems to go right through them without killing them. Sometimes it doesn't seem to reach them, even when there's nothing in the way. 3-4 screens in, there's a lone enemy who signals to his friends and it's impossible to him before he does this, no matter what you do. I guess it's scripted that way, but the last thing I want in an action game is for my success or failure to depend on what the author intended for that particular screen. If he wanted that enemy to live until it had done its job, then put a damn obstacle in the way so that you can't shoot it immediately. As is, you're never 100% sure if you screwed up or if it was scripted for you to fail.
    Even when you CAN kill the enemies, many of them seem to run right through the beam and grab you. Sometimes you're allowed to shake them off, sometimes it's an instant death. Why? Who knows. Plus, I wasn't crazy about the pre-rendered backgrounds making the path unclear. Can I climb that weird rock or am I supposed to go a different way? Is that bone something I can jump on, or will I fall to my death? Navigating a platform game shouldn't be a process of trial and error.
    Oh, I also forgot to mention; Your comment about it being hard to aim at some enemies due to having to use the D-pad is just one of the many things I've always hated about D-pad controllers. Well, that and that they all force you to use your left hand to control your character. When the NES came out and I saw the cheap little control pads, I thought they looked like an even worse idea than the Intellivision disc controllers. It took a few years, but I guess the rest of the world finally agrees with me, since every single modern game system now uses an analog stick for movement. Now if they'd just realize how unnatural it is for right-handed gamers to use their left hand to control onscreen characters, steer a car, etc. At least with emulators you can use a decent controller and map the controls intelligently.

    • @squigin3380
      @squigin3380 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      im right handed and never thought it was awkward to control movement with my left hand but I may have to try doing it with the right analogue soon since I've been playing games pretty much exclusively on openemu lately and you can map your controller buttons.(using a dualshock 4)

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try playing this game (using the mouse) with both your left and right hands and see which one you get farther with;
      www.allmazegames.com/play/mouse_maze.htm
      If you're like most right-handed people, you'll do better with your right hand because it's more coordinated.
      The same would normally apply to a controller, but people have been conditioned to believe that using your left hand is normal.

    • @ozstriker4075
      @ozstriker4075 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just played this emulated and totally agree with you, about the hit and miss nature of shooting enemies, enemies constantly respawning from both directions. Not too bothered about right handed gamers controlling characters with left hand. But controls felt awful and sluggish in comparison to other 2d scrollers, I guess that's what happens when u use some sort of prerendered motion capture for character movements on 32bit hardware. Sprinting and jumping feel awkward and cumbersome. Some of this could be due to emulation but it's not one I'll be picking up a real disc to play further.

    It's a shame it was super delayed and was considered dated when it was released, and suffered from shit marketing. When as a matter of fact, you can't compare for example the cutscenes to today's standards but they still do the trick in my book, you see that they are old but somehow they still look great to me. Which is then mind-boggling how such a gem could remain unnoticed. The gameplay is a blast and sometimes really hard, the plot odd at times but really exciting, the atmosphere and themes are just terrific and original, the sound design is top notch and the soundtrack is highest quality. The only thing that is a flaw (if you would like to call it that) are the characters that are either too dull or too goofy, but it goes well with the somewhat cliché plot.
    Even though the game is one from my childhood, the game does not get credit due to nostalgia. It's just so good, to this day.

    Great review, i hate how criminally underrated this game is and how overrated shitty games like Limbo and Braid are. Heart Of Darkness is pure art still waiting for a sequel tho

      It was super-delayed. I think it was mentioned on the PS1's release.

    Great to find someone else who likes the game. So many people are unnecessarily aggressive and nasty about this game because it's too hard for them worse still when people can't make decisions about the game themselves and just believe everything they read on the internet which is a shame because even though the game is far from perfect it's still a good game.

      That's it. It's not healthy to be a sheep. No game is perfect, so I feel it's good to give everything an equal chance. I try not to watch any other reviews prior to playing myself to prevent bias.

      It's kinda ironic. Games like Mega Man are insanly difficult and yet extremly popular and beloved. Yet Heart of Darkness get's all the hate for being difficult.

      regrettably, popularity is KING. Someone who is just as likely to be unnecessarily critical of a piece of media will deny any and all flaws of another similar one simply because it is popular or they personally grew up with it. The amount of people who deny HoD was made by a very small team, was pushed around by overaggressive publishers, and was technically the generation's equivalent of an indie game just to further their agenda of depicting it as "the worst game ever" are numerous enough that people genuinely believe the game caused the studio to go bankrupt and stuff. People love Nintendo games, they're popular and a lot of people grow up with them so you'll be hardpressed to find someone willing to point out flaws in some of their less polished works, but little obscure games like this are a prime target for people to get offended that they're considered classics. It's simply the hypocrisy of people who favor the games they grew up with against similar titles they personally don't like. Having a negative opinion is one thing, but spreading misinformation and being rude are not okay.

    I couldn't get anywhere on this game as young kid, my dad quickly became consumed by it and I spent many an evening joyfully and nervously watching him progress through it. Amazing memories.

    • @warmecanic
      @warmecanic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Conrad, the writer, The Hearth of Darkness, You know, they took that novel and made Apocalypse now, but I guess the only thing similar to the novel is the character of Marlon Brando. I was searching for that book and I found this game, never heard of it.

    Shame it wasnt an actual sequel to Another World with it's darker tone. This game looks cool but the goofy animation and tone is a bit off-putting to me

    Respectfully disagree. Just from what I've seen this game looks like one of the biggest pieces of shit right up there with nonsensical WTF crap like Sonic 06 and Order 1886.
