Great analysis but I think it's important to add that it is particularly young Burkinabes who are comparing him to Sankara. I've been to Burkina Faso and have friends there and have seen many young people inspired by Sankara even though they were born since his death. Life is damn hard at the best of times there so to see young people have some hope for the future through Trarore should give us some inspiration.
Sankara didn't only focus on international issues, he developed direct programs to help instill self sufficiency. But as you said we will have to wait and see if the new leader can measure up to Sankara and continue being laser focused on development
4:40 _Because of this failure Captain Ibrahim Traoré has taken over the government and vowed to take out ji·had·ist_ It was Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba who used this argument to justify the January 2022 coup and the overthrow of the President (Roch Marc Christian Kaboré). Ibrahim Traoré (IB) who is the current leader of the military junta in Burkina Faso did his coup (September 2022) mostly for other reasons although he reused this argument to justify his own coup. IB overthrew Damiba while he helped him first as he was part of the military officers involved in the January 2022 coup. To grossly sum up things, Damiba was popular amongst soldiers but lacking on the civil support. IB holds the opposite. Unpopular or at least not as popular amongst soldiers as Damiba was, which explains the "purge" of influent people here and there and his very strong control of almost everything in Burkina Faso. But IB can still do this while he doesn't have any good result to show because he's quite popular amongst the civilians. It must also be noted that he's the first Muslim leader of Burkina Faso since Saye Zerbo. In a country where over 60% of the population is Muslim, it must surely help him.
Ok, so I know this channel is for a historical context on the continent of Africa, but would it be possible to make a channel covering current day Africa and what's going on over there? Maybe commentate on African news?
Great video. I count myself amongst the comments of people looking for discussion of African current events here in America so I greatly appreciate this content. I think these events in Burkina Faso are obviously greatly linked to the insurgencies and coups going on throughout the region. People are so tired of leaders being elected or taking power and just slowly giving away more power to Europe. What we need to see from these leaders is infrastructure, give people something to hold on to and build up. It is obviously hard in the Sahel region due to geography but not impossible. I’m fascinated by the debate caused by recent philanthropy in Africa whether it be native son Akon or not so native son Mr Beast. Those two have been building street lights and water pumps…basics in 2023. Any government with men in suits taking private planes and overseeing billion dollar economies that can’t give street lights and water deserves all the ridicule they get because they are obviously corrupt. Most of my West African friends support the coups because they are so tired of the elites mismanagement and corruption. I understand that, but we must watch out that we don’t look to clout and power chasing military leaders to do things they were never trained or taught to do. Of course they are going to lean on China or Russia and make bad deals, they took power to defeat their enemies and grasp control, they weren’t trained to build water pipes and an education system. I pray that these Sahel nations can work together and build stability within their states that gives Muslim kids in the desert a better opportunity than being a poor herder or fighting an insurgency.

I’m curious of your perspective on the Hannibal Barca situation. I saw your video from 2-3 years ago about Carthage, and you briefly touched on Hannibal. But with Denzel now slated to play “Hannibal Barca” in a movie directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan (writer for Scorsese, Mendes, Stone, Tim Burton, etc) it has created quite a firestorm around “Blackwashing.”
This old lady has admired Hannibal since childhood is not happy about that movie from an historical, social, political, ethical…long list of reasons. The whole setup makes my teeth hurt. What makes it worse is that much of the population of this country, regardless of ethnicity, is functionally illiterate (among the highest rate in the world), which has resulted in multiple generations who believe what appears on movie and tv screens is true. Undoing that is a huge challenge because we have generations of people who, if they question the status quo, do not have the skills the find the answers and share them with others. Sorry for the tangent…
As a member of the kidnapped crew who is American by circumstance but African by blood and birthright, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY support Traore's initiative and how he is taking matters into his own hands! i recently learned that traore is (or, at the very least, was) a marxist aswell, during his university years he was the head of a marxist study group. i am very interested in where this might lead
Sankara was also a Marxist Leninist. Im surprised that didnt come up in the video, as the person he appointed as the head of the economy also describes themselves as a Marxist and Pan-Africanist who believes the path of the Burkinabé’s economic development was already laid out by Sankara (which was an explicitly communist approach) and was going to pick up that legacy. Its also worth noting that Sankara and Nkrumah’s understanding of neocolonialism not only had roots in their direct experience with it, but also in Lenin’s text Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism.
Rwanda and Ghana presidents are sellout to the western imperialists. Know your facts and geopolitics! Praying won't help neither but firm decisions and actions. 🙄🥱

It is an insult to compare Ibrahim to Sankara. 1. While Sankara gave education to women, Ibrahim is killing women and children. 2. While Sankara was a Pan-africanist by being non-aligned, Ibrahim has aligned with Russia. Just like Russia, he has been killing and abducting his colleague soldiers he sees as threat 3. While Sankara was keen on the Unity of Africa, Ibrahim is more focused on his power and hence, divides. 4. While Sankara allowed media freedom, Ibrahim has shut down the media. His camp is the only source of information. 5. While Sankara has a political ideology, Ibrahim has no clue. As Sankara said, A soldier without a political ideology is a criminal. And that's what Ibrahim. Next time you want to compare Sankara, look for a qualified person.
...says you, the French puppet, who spouts Anglo/Euro colonizer propaganda. Here are the facts: In the 1980s when Sankara was president, he defined his program as anti-imperial. This means that he distanced his government from colonialism. He reduced French aid by 80% between 1983 and 1985. In February 2023, only about 4 months after he became president, Traore’s government expelled the French forces assisting in fighting insurgency in his country. Traore also expelled *some French journalists, as well as suspending media outlets called France 24 and Radio France International (RFI).* In the 1980s when Sankara became president, he lowered his salary, used only one car, didn’t use an air conditioner, and limited several other luxuries. Then, just about 2 months after Traoré came into power, he *denounced his salary as head of state.* Instead, he wanted to receive his salary as a captain. Both Men are Nationalists and Pan-Africanists. Thomas Sankara once said, “There is no true social revolution without the liberation of women”. The government of Captain Ibrahim Traore included five women among 23 cabinet members. Anyone reading these comments can research on their own.

He pretended to work for Burkinabès and that they were all volunteers but it's a fat lie: _Enlèvements : La terreur au service d’un pouvoir absolutiste_ !
