- I met up with another vlogger from Nigeria Dorcas Morounmubo. We did Language challenge. since both of our countries have pidgin which is a form broken English, She thought me some Nigerian Pidgin and I thought her some Papua New Guinean Pidgin which is called Tok Pisin.

PNG Pidgin is not purely broken English, some words are derived from the German language. That's why Dorcas wasn't able to pick up some of the words.
Some words in German, France, Portugese, Spanish etc are found in PNG pidgin.

I have Nigerian friends and when I speak pidgin with my family, they just stare at us looking very lost 😂😂 they tell me our pidgin is more complicated.

Tok Pisin is most definitely not just ‘broken English’. It is a creole language which has become a first language for many, rather than simply a lingua franca.
Pidgin language is very unique, I live in Boven Digoel Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia
Boven Digoel is a district bordering the country of Papua New Guinea, so we also speak Pidgin

Tokpisin has gone along way and evolved from its early roots, now we have local words, alot from our native words and regional accents and even dialects of tokpisin..btw loved your video , pls do more thanks

In other countries they call their Pidgins "English Pidgin" eg: Hawaiian English Pidgin, Nigerian English Pidgin or Jamaican English Pidgin, where as in Papua New Guinea their Pidgin is just call Papua New Guinea Pidgin. Pidgin is basically broken English meaning English words not being placed grammatically correct but in PNG their pidgin is not actually just comprised of English words, but also consists of German words and words from the language of the locals in ENB where the explorers settled. That's why its way more complex cuz its not actual pidgin, it's a mixture of German, Englsih and ENB tok ples. That's why Tok Pisin spoken in ENB is the real pure Tok Pisin

And I disagree. There is no pure form of tokpisin. There shouldn't be a pure form of tokpisin. The purpose of tokpisin was to make communication easy and it evolving with time enables it to carry out its initial purpose. Hence the argument on wether or not Tokpisin should be recognized has an official language.
Your right. It has Tolai influences. Example; tree in tokpisin is "diwai" which comes from Kuanua (Tolai) "Dawai" meaning tree. "Pekpek" comes from "peke" which means "shit".

Current tokpisin in PNG is more simplified to short forms unlike in the past. You will find the old tokpisin mostly written in tokpisin Bible or even in some tokpisin written books.

I am fluent in pidgin it's original trade language, German, Italian, Portuguese and English
Some of the words or names of things in the pigin language like Buai, daka, kambang(line) and a few others were taken from the Tolai kuanua language however most of the words have been replaced with English words tbrough the years. The original tokpisin is still spoken by some of the Elderly people in Rabaul. History says Tokpisin was established in the 18th century when Black Birders and early traders came to Rabaul from countries like Australia and captured natives from Rabaul & other pacific nations like Vanuatu, Solomon Islands to work as slaves in sugarcane Plantations in Queensland. They had a problem with communicating so they had come up with the Pigdin English to help them communicate. Thats why we have similar pidgin with our neighboring countries.

There is no pure form of tokpisin. There shouldn't be a pure form of tokpisin. The purpose of tokpisin was to make communication easy and it evolving with time enables it to carry out its initial purpose. Hence the argument on wether or not Tokpisin should be recognized as an official language of PNG (has it been a recognized). It's a good comparison but has you would have realized by now that every country that uses PIDGIN as a common language of communication will differ greatly based on alot of factors esp depending on who colonized them, etc.

I can speak tok pidgin but very little.
I always think that tok pidgin PNG and Tok pidgin African is same but now I know it's different..

You should check out Sierra Leone creole, Krio, they use a spelling system more like Tok Pisin but with a grammar more like Nigerian Pidgin!
And if you spelled Nigerian Pidgin with a similar phonetic system it might seem more similar I think :)

Tok Pisin is very ambiguous, one word or sentence can mean so many different things. For example: if you say "Em ya" which means "look here" or "look at me" it can also mean
"it's here"
"You can have this"
"Look at this"
"That's right"
.......etc.....

Tok pisin is a mixture of English, German and Italian languages. The two colonizers of PNG. Some of the non English word we use in pidgin are Germany and Italian languages

Hi Steven, I love your work, more grease to your elbow. I have come to love Papua New Guinea and have been surfing the internet for schools to study for a master's or a post-graduate diploma. But am not getting the right responses. The Papua New Guinea University of Technology, suggested I apply for a Queen Elizabeth scholar. I have the resources and don't want to follow that route, because competition might be much. Please can you kindly do a video on how to gain admission into any of Papua New Guinea Universities for international students? We would greatly appreciate it.

Great post here! Steve do you know that around 1990 and before that there were only about 300 words in the PNG Tok Pisin? At that time when I was told that by my lecturer Fr Frank Mihalic SVD, who is the father of PNG Tok Pisin and an expert who has written the PNG Tok Pisin Dictionary. Well that has changed since the 1990s, and now we have new additions that has increased the number of words. By the way do you know what limlimbur means? Eheheheheheh.
