  • In this video, I go over an Emcoturn 120 lathe project. Will be fitted with DMM Technologies AC servos and Centroid CNC Acorn motion controller. It is fitted with a spindle encoder, a Leeson 5hp spindle motor, and a Huan Yang VFD.

I'm going the same route atm but with a Boxford 250. I'm still gathering the bits, just the spindle drive and touch screen to go. My turret looks a bit similar to that one so I'm keen to see how you go about controlling yours. Thanks for the whole series of videos, very informative and extremely useful.

The Emcoturn 120 has long been done. It used 4 sensor gray logic. It would be very helpful if you found a schematic for your turret/machine

My Emcotronic T1 just crashed to the ground. Thanks for making this video.

Marty these vids you make are good material... I have that same lathe mine is the Emco 120p my lathe came with all the manuals control and it’s has the 380v transformer one question I have is do you think it’s worth to keep that way and run it of a 7.5 rpc I have

Its a good machine, control is outdated. Spindle motor is high voltage DC. The only thing about rotary phase converters is voltage balance. I have two Emcoturn 220's (5C machines) that will get done in the near future and sold...never understood why they made the 120 at all. 220 same frame, bigger through hole.

Nice I’m keeping my eyes open for another Emco ..... the phase converter I have is a North America phase converter 7.5hp and claim to be balanced any tips or advice before dive in

Also I’m goin to neeed to balance the transformer I’ll see how it goes

Not sure what to tell you other than check your voltages into and out of the transformer. Get an electrician to help you if you aren't comfortable doing it.

What was the reason for the 5hp motor. Does it need that much?? The original was 3.5 I believe

It had already been replaced with a nice inverter duty Lesson motor. It all depends on the work you want to do on it

We have 2 of these Emco 120’s with turrets at our High School... they’ve been sitting in the back of a classroom for probably a decade or more unused. The robotics team of the school is debating if we want to try to sell them off/scrap them/retrofit them... they really only have use-cases for a manual lathe, so I’m not sure if it’s financially wise to invest in retrofitting it...
How much did the retrofit for your machines end up costing? I understand a lot of the work was already done by the previous owner... also any idea how much these would net us on the market?

    • @martyscncgarage5275
      @martyscncgarage5275  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Realistically, cost between $2 and $4k depending on what motors and control you go with. If you can use a CNC lathe, then it might be worth it

Marty do you have a wiring schematic for emco 120 with the turret tool changer and centroid acorn please?

Just download it from Centroid. Search for 4 bit gray code turret lathe S14987

Marty. I am going to convert an Emcoturn 342 to Centroid. How do I get ahold of you? Lots of questions.

Mike, I don't do one on ones without compensation. Best thing to do is post a build thread on the Centroid user Forums. As time permits I frequent the forum as do many other power users. Your build thread will also help other users trying to do the same thing. Thank you for your understanding, good luck with the project and Happy New Year!

    Hello Marty,
It should be great to get in touch with you.
Presently I should like to assemble my first benchtop CNC machine. Would be wonderful if you could give me some advice.
    Best regards,
    Kevin

Kevin, my suggestion is to work with Centroid Acorn. Visit Centroidcnc.com , read up on Acorn, download the schematics and study them. Try and find a bench top CNC machine that needs a new control and go from there. There a reason a number of helpful users on the Centroid Acorn user forums that I also frequent and can lend help or advise.

Marty, great topics i have a question about the emco machine.I am thinking about upgrading my emco 140 to acorn from mach3The machine i equiped with closed loop steppers and a 8 pos turreti saw the film about hooking up the closed loop system. But is it posible to run the Sauter tusset with acorn???Thanks in advance Henk from Hollandsorry for my not te good Englishinfo@autoschadeheins.nl

Hi Henk. I know who you are. :-) The next revision of software will have more support for ATC's. How does your turret work?
Here is one of a Denford Orac lathe running centroidcncforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=967&p=4478&hilit=Denford+Orac#p4478
You should post to the CNC User forums with the info about the Sauter Turret. Its sequence of operation. Centroid Support staff may comment. centroidcncforum.com/viewforum.php?f=60
Much has to do with the number of I/O required.
