Some of these algorithms make some really shitty mazes. Like yeah it's technically a maze but a dead end shouldn't be like one block long.
Completely agree
I know, and its frustrating that the best mazes (with the most branching and the least bias) have the slowest algorithms.
Hunt & Kill is pretty good tho
If you could only navigate the maze as a series of choices, so only a series of "forward, left, or right", then these mazes would be awful.
@@luiz00estilo Thats the algorithm I'm using for a game I'm making. With the appropriate optimizations, its speed isn't noticeably worse than Prim's, even for mazes as large as 100x100.

Depth-first and Hunt and Kill are the only ones that actually look good. All the others have all those ugly E-shaped dead ends.
and most can be solved in seconds, only a few are actually challenging in any form.
100% agree. It's because both are DFS-based algorithms that more-or-less generate an entire path at a time, make a dead end, and backtrack---what a human might do. A lot of the others generate sequentially or randomly, but they produce far fewer coherent paths, and thus feel a bit "off" for us humans.
I used Depth-first to generate a maze for a Tanks game. Then I just randomly chopped of walls from areas and I was left with open, but mazey random levels, perfect for the Tanks game.

- maze generation algorithm, 2017
Welcome to episode 4 of an ongoing series called "Why is this in my Recommended?"
when he said beep bap bopbeep bep abap bopbipboop bab bwarg bwarg bwarg bwarg bwarg bwar piou piou piou piou piou piou I felt that
For a class we had to implement a maze generation algorithm but I refused to look up an existing ones so I made my own. It used A* to path two points on a grid together, then used A* again to path a point not yet on the maze to a point on the maze. It was horrifically inefficient but if you messed with the weights you could get it to generate pretty cool cavern looking things and something that at least sort of resembled mazes.
Interesting! Sounds like it'll create a maze with long winding corridors. Can you share an example output?
Hmm popped up in my recommended 3 years later :)

What do these beep boops mean? No one knows, not even the scientists, these computers dont do anything either.
No, shift the pitch of every DCSC:HM song and play them all at once
Ok, so... like... would it be possible to have the notes be set on a coordinate grid that play a note in an octave that corresponds with a specific (x, y) coordinate? I think that'd sound hella cool with the first algorithm.

0:43 me explaining to my mom why i need to find out the price of the PS5
I've thought about this a lot and I think in practice the best mazes actually have long parallel paths where your eye has a tendency to accidentally jump a wall.
One artist found an easy way to generate large square spirals which are a pain to traverse visually.
From a 1st person perspective I guess you'd want to maximize the number of knight moves (forward 2, over 1) followed by a junction, to create the most paths which can't be checked visually.

Hi! Check the link in the description, it's a page with links to a description of all of these algorithms.

I now get eller’s, but I still don’t understand sidewinder and binary tree.
Here's a short explanation:
Binary tree - iterate over every cell starting from top left. For every cell randomly carve either up or left.
Sidewinder is a bit more complex. Basically you carve right until you randomly decide to stop, then choose one cell at random from the group you just connected and carve up. This page has more information - weblog.jamisbuck.org/2011/2/3/maze-generation-sidewinder-algorithm
