Proceedings of the Commissioners Appointed to Negotiate a Treaty with the Six Nations, 1775

The Six Nations of the Iroquois, also known as the Haudenosaunee, was a powerful league of independent tribes in western and upstate New York.
At the start of the Revolutionary War, the tribes maintained unity and neutrality, calling the conflict a “family affair” and would “take no part in the Quarrel.”
The pressure of war ultimately fractured the Six Nations confederacy. The Cayuga, Mohawk, Onondaga, and Seneca tribes sided with the British, while many Oneida and Tuscaroras supported the Americans. The divided allegiances of the tribes transformed the Revolutionary War into a civil war among the Six Nations.
