I started off with dial up here in 1996, then ISDN, then 512 ADSL, then it crept up to 2mbps ASDL, then eventually FTTC at 72mbps and finally Openreach installed my FTTP 2 weeks ago and I am now happily connected at just under 1gbps :) It's been a long journey to this and my ping is fast too at around 4ms

Portman: that is partially true and BT sold its know how to NEC of Japan, however Thatcher resigned in 1990 and the failure by BT/Openreach to invest in its fibre network is one of the worst examples of having a world leader and failing to exploit it. The UK has had 32 years to bring its infrastructure up to date. The consolation for alternative network providers is that they have had the opportunity to build up competition in a way that could not have been done if BT had acted sooner. Altnets 1, BT Management 0.

    They talk about overbuild.
I witnessed this with my own eyes.
G Network builds in an area without fibre, then boom guess who pops out of nowhere.
    You guessed it, Openreach.

Could have been done sooner if Thatcher didn't cancel the fibre rollout plan. Yet another reason UK is stuck with third world speeds!

This roll out should have been completed 20 years ago. Again we are always late. Money and profits I bet. These companies don't like to spend money on investment and infrastructure unless they got no choice or the government gives them money.
