Facts. I have food allergies, Medicine allergies, and bee stings. At least one of my allergens is by smell and I cant control bees so I cant fully prevent allergic reactions. I cant afford a 500$ epipen even with discounts. (1000 out of pocket) Not to mention you must buy one each year as they expire quickly. I walk around with a few Benadryl in my wallet and hope for the best
The issue doesn’t get solved with government. Government shouldn’t decide who lives or dies. That is worse than not being able to afford. I can’t afford my medicine. But I also do not want government deciding my fate.

I’m Canadian. The meds I take daily are covered so I don’t pay a penny for them. Healthcare is a human right and people shouldn’t have to decide between medical care and other basic needs!

This hits home. I learned how to start rashining insulin when I was 9 years old, because my family could barely afford it. That was 15 years ago. It's only gone up in price from then.

Personally I prefer how the US does it in many cases over Canada. It's an unfair comparison but my point still stands. I like having the option of being able to fight for my own life over having the government poke me into choosing to die to save tax dollars. If their was a perfect system I'd prefer it, but as things are? A case by case basis will do when it comes to medical care.

I had that experience when I went to New York City and people would ask why I moved there. I said because it's New York! I came to regret it, though. I couldn't move out fast enough because of being poor and the crime and the rude people. I don't know how much a 3-week hospital stay would cost here but the very poor can get Medicaid and the rich and upper middle class can get insurance. It's the people that are in between that are struggling for healthcare. My main worry living here is student loan debt. It's 6 figures! I want to move to another country but there are so many options and it's such a big decision, I want to take my time choosing. Plus, due to covid and now monkeypox, being able to do that is going to be so much harder.

I thank every day that I live in Australia where the government negotiates a price from the manufacturers. Also part of my tax dollars to share with people's needs. It's not a perfect situation but I can get 36 pens of insulin for around $21.00 total. It's possible America your government needs to have the will to make change.

Governments don't negotiate prices with drug companies. What they do is blackmail the drug companies, telling them that they can either take the price the government says they'll pay, or the government will just take their patents and make the drugs themselves. Note that I'm not saying that the drug companies are perfect little angels, but neither are these governments.

I have type 1 diabetes as well and my mother and I are so incredibly thankful that our current insurance covers insulin 100%, otherwise we couldn't afford it if they change the price cap law in Illinois. we're kinda hoarding our massive insulin stock in case something changes, but im so glad that currently don't have to ration out my supplies. we are also willing to give some away for other diabetics who cant afford it themselves.

My husband is a type 1 diabetic. Without insurance the price for his monthly Novalog is over 400 bucks. Two boxes of 5 pens each. With insurance its 35 a month. However, at Walmart if you do not have insurance a month supply of Novalog is 70 bucks. I also live in California and they just passed something where the state is making insulin and making it where more people have access to it.
I'm rationing insulin right now. I have to take it before every meal sand before bed. So now I don't eat some days just to stretch it out as much as possible. I wish I lived in a decent country.

Related vent** This clip hit too close to home right now My pain management clinic that I've been going to for over 5+ years just kicked me out because they're no longer taking State insurance I can die without the medication they provide and I can only get that medication through their clinic (or other pain management clinics) There are no other pain management clinics in my area taking patients right now They know this is a potential (and very likely) death sentence for me. This is happening accros England right now. Yes we don't pay for hospital admisions or care directly, but most of us do have to pay for perscriptions. It costs around £10 for each perscription that can be enough medication for a month or for a few days. For us who need multiple medications to survive that can tot up to a lot of money each month. We were already struggling but now were struggling to make ends meet just to buy food never mind medication.

I had to ration medicine too. I’ve been dealing with financial issues and I don’t qualify for Medicare. I couldn’t pick up my medicine at the pharmacy due to its price. First time I ever cried at the pharmacy. It sucks that my medicine is so expensive and the company who makes it has the sole right to produce it for twenty years. After twenty years is over generics can be made. (I looked up this info) I think in the next five years this company will have reached its twentieth year.
I have a friend who's type 1 diabetic.... she's also got kidney didease......she works in the medical field, but her insulin is still outrageous. I feel so bad for her. She works at a hospital, and still, the cost of her of the meds that save her life are ridiculous. Its so sad.
I see these videos and even true stories from people and I'm grateful thst I don't pay much for my insulin because I work in Healthcare and my insurance plus my employee discount reduce my cost of insulin down to about $8 for my box of insulin pens. But it still breaks my heart knowing there's others that can't afford it
The current US Administration negotiated insulin to $35 . But that was a battle, with the pharmaceutical companies and the party that follows Trump, not liking it one bit. All because of the idea that the market should decide Health Care costs. The other one that hurts health consumers in the USA, is that they very rarely allow generics into the market.

So, they're in the ER because they were taken there. (Perhaps they passed.) If they have insurance, in theory, the insurance will pay for it. Hospitals can't refuse service. So, if the patient can't pay, the patient in likely to go into debt unless the hospitable has a benevolent fund. It's pretty common for patients to end up in the ER because they can't afford preventative care. The concept of preventative care is pretty recent, but there is no universal care system to guarantee it.

But US citizens have to demand the prices go down AND stop the insurance companies from denying people coverage. There's only a handful of companies due to egregious patent laws and government agencies that protect them under thinly veiled excuses. Big Pharma pays the politicians, the politicians protect Big Pharma, the government's a bunch of mobsters.
No, there are a lot of companies making insulin. They're just changing how they make it every few years so that they can hold a patent on that method, which prohibits competition for newer, better forms of insulin (there are a ton). The fictional hospital in the show has an agreement with one manufacturer rather than multiple. I'm sure it's for simplicity's sake, to show the issue more clearly.

They just changed the old a bit to have a new patent to be able to increase the price.

It's scary to live in the US. So glad in Ireland type 1 diabetics don't have to pay for insulin. My sister is type 1.

I have type 1 diabetes as well and my mother and I are so incredibly thankful that our current insurance covers insulin 100%, otherwise we couldn't afford it if they change the price cap law in Illinois. we're kinda hoarding our massive insulin stock in case something changes, but im so glad that currently don't have to ration out my supplies. we are also willing to give some away for other diabetics who cant afford it themselves.

@@stephenwillis6937 I live in a 3rd world capitalist country and the insulin price is about 17$ - 70$. This high price range is caused by pharmaceutical companies being free to set prices and diabetic patients can choose the desired product according to their needs and financial capabilities.
I think 250$ is not capitalist price, but the result of oligarchy. I'm sure you know it's totally against capitalism, right?
My husband is a type 1 diabetic. Without insurance the price for his monthly Novalog is over 400 bucks. Two boxes of 5 pens each. With insurance its 35 a month. However, at Walmart if you do not have insurance a month supply of Novalog is 70 bucks. I also live in California and they just passed something where the state is making insulin and making it where more people have access to it.
One of my heart meds is close to $900. My job fired me but I thank God for the free samples they give me until my benefits kicked in

My pain management clinic that I've been going to for over 5+ years just kicked me out because they're no longer taking State insurance
I can die without the medication they provide and I can only get that medication through their clinic (or other pain management clinics)
There are no other pain management clinics in my area taking patients right now
They know this is a potential (and very likely) death sentence for me.
When I begged them to work something out until I could figure something out,
They told me it wasn't their problem
These are people I've come to know as family
I see them multiple times a month
We know each other by name
I've seen them grow their own families
And now they're fully comfortable sitting back and letting me die
The only way I can keep going to them is if I pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket for private insurance
Which if I do that, I will no longer be able to afford to go to the neurologist or OBGYN because co-pays will be too high on top of the monthly payments for insurance
And considering my last MRI found "concerning abnormalities"
No matter what I choose
I can't afford to live either...

This is happening accros England right now. Yes we don't pay for hospital admisions or care directly, but most of us do have to pay for perscriptions. It costs around £10 for each perscription that can be enough medication for a month or for a few days. For us who need multiple medications to survive that can tot up to a lot of money each month. We were already struggling but now were struggling to make ends meet just to buy food never mind medication.
The NHS Prepayment certificate costs about £12 a month and covers all prescriptions. It's really helpful if you have multiple prescriptions.

There's a huge market for "Non-Patented" medications, medical devices, and prosthetics out there. Its shocking how cheap it all is to manufacture.

I had to ration medicine too. I’ve been dealing with financial issues and I don’t qualify for Medicare. I couldn’t pick up my medicine at the pharmacy due to its price. First time I ever cried at the pharmacy. It sucks that my medicine is so expensive and the company who makes it has the sole right to produce it for twenty years. After twenty years is over generics can be made. (I looked up this info) I think in the next five years this company will have reached its twentieth year.

I have a friend who's type 1 diabetic.... she's also got kidney didease......she works in the medical field, but her insulin is still outrageous. I feel so bad for her. She works at a hospital, and still, the cost of her of the meds that save her life are ridiculous. Its so sad.

I see these videos and even true stories from people and I'm grateful thst I don't pay much for my insulin because I work in Healthcare and my insurance plus my employee discount reduce my cost of insulin down to about $8 for my box of insulin pens. But it still breaks my heart knowing there's others that can't afford it
The current US Administration negotiated insulin to $35 . But that was a battle, with the pharmaceutical companies and the party that follows Trump, not liking it one bit. All because of the idea that the market should decide Health Care costs. The other one that hurts health consumers in the USA, is that they very rarely allow generics into the market.
Sorry if this is rude, I’m not American and am genuinely curious: if someone can’t afford insulin ($200), then why are they in the ER (which to my knowledge $10k) that doesn’t make much sense. How would they be able to afford that?
The bill us and we ignore the bills.
So, they're in the ER because they were taken there. (Perhaps they passed.) If they have insurance, in theory, the insurance will pay for it. Hospitals can't refuse service. So, if the patient can't pay, the patient in likely to go into debt unless the hospitable has a benevolent fund. It's pretty common for patients to end up in the ER because they can't afford preventative care. The concept of preventative care is pretty recent, but there is no universal care system to guarantee it.
They’re in a free clinic. There is a lot of greed in my beautiful country, but we have places to go in an emergency. No one should go broke trying to stay alive. Hope you are having a beautiful day my friend.

They have to treat you if you show up to the ER. You technically have to pay, but you could skip out on that if you don't give them that much information (insurance, payment info, idk address maybe)

No kidding drugs are expensive to save your life. I take NPlate and that’s over 2,000 a shot if you don’t have insurance. I get it every Thursday. Without insurance I wouldn’t be able to afford it.
I´m so thankful for not living in the US. In Europe we have problems too, but it´s so much better than the US ... Some relatives of my mother moved to the US decades ago and I´m so grateful for my mother that she didn´t move to the US with us ....

There's only a handful of companies due to egregious patent laws and government agencies that protect them under thinly veiled excuses. Big Pharma pays the politicians, the politicians protect Big Pharma, the government's a bunch of mobsters.
No, there are a lot of companies making insulin. They're just changing how they make it every few years so that they can hold a patent on that method, which prohibits competition for newer, better forms of insulin (there are a ton). The fictional hospital in the show has an agreement with one manufacturer rather than multiple. I'm sure it's for simplicity's sake, to show the issue more clearly.

Dr. House is cornered by Vogler to give a speech in favor of one new medication (produced by Vogler's pharmaceutical company). And during the speech, Dr. House reveals the truth: the new medication is the same as the old one, but a lot more expansive. They just changed the old a bit to have a new patent to be able to increase the price.

That ship has pretty much sailed. It’s practically impossible to get rid of Medicaid and Medicare at this point. Neither party would survive attempting to do that. The politicians are just holding back the tide towards fully socialized medicine at this point.
