I think the premise of the book that Jeff Kinney was going for was Greg continually doubling down on finding success, hence the name, (winning a competition, impressing a college girl, playing an instrument, making a film) and it being a compilation of his attempts, similar to the first book. The difference is with the OG book, the dynamic and friendship between Rowley and Greg is an underlying theme of the book, while in Double Down there is none, just a bunch of wacky stuff for the sake of being wacky. Also regarding the unfocused plot of Double Down, it doesn't help that the jokes in the book are really drawn out for no real reason, especially the Truman Show bit and Spineticklers. It reminds me a lot of the cutaway gags in bad Family Guy episodes, but in book format.
This book was so convoluted that it not only had zero impact on me, but I started to really realize that this franchise was low on steam. There were so much disjointed chaos and I had absolutely no chemistry with the problems that rose up.
The Long Haul was the last book I bought the year it came out. Since then I’ve only read a new book once every couple years if I can find it at the library or thrift store. Reading Old School and Double Down reassured my suspicion that the series was burning out. I believe DWK is the Simpsons of books, because it just won’t die.
in my opinon, the deep end is better. this is my LEAST favriote book, there is so much stories but unlike Hard luck, NONE of them have real impact on lore. I Also hate the fact it felt shorter then other oboks, I Was looking forward for the horror movie but it turned out to be a 20 page (counted) story. none of the stories lasted more then like 20 - 30 pages. I Dont think this was the dropping point because book 12 and 13 were pretty good. With the new no brainer book coming up and cheese themed text, Im not sure we can get our hopes up high. The cheese plotline was great, and im sad in ended by book 1. I Think the cheese plot line was scrapped but manufactueres had already begun making the book cover like it so it was too late. Long story short, this book is a dissapointment.

Thats why i like it so much
people would say the last good book was the third wheel but I think it REALLY happened in Double Down..
Old school was good but not long haul
no the last good book was hard luck or long haul
I just look at this book as a collection of short DOAWK stories.
Lol they already did that with the third Rowley book
I read this book and hated how there was no actual story
Ikr😂
It felt like I was watching and analyzing greg’s mind there’s almost no plot
2:23 3 PAGES OUT OF THE ENTIRE BOOK!!!
