- For the first time, South Africans will vote on three ballots to ensure independent candidates who are contesting the upcoming elections under no party affiliation are catered for.
Several independent candidates will contest for seats in the National Assembly and the provincial legislature.
Independent candidates will be on the same ballot as political parties.
We find out why they are standing as independent candidates and which major policy issues they will address if they are elected.
With us this morning are some of those independent candidates: Anele Mda, Faith Phathela, Zackie Achmat and Lovemore Ndou.

I applaud te increase of Independent Candidates. To function effectively, we need to get rid of te Party System. That's wy I will vote for te Oranic Humanity Movement, whioch will erase the party system. TheN we can start holding politicians accountable!

Because being independant, they run solo, and the buck stops with them because they will appoint every single one of their staff - can't have excuse when you hire someone, and can't hide within the party shadows or "disappear" in large parties when they get caught for corruption etc.

The "action plans" of these independent candidates and leaders of the smaller parties basically revolve around achieving a seat in parliament with a nice fat salary, great benefits and a nice fat pension... for doing nothing to very little.....
