I’m in my 70s now. And playing the guitar to myself, alone, may be 1 of the most important reasons I’m still alive. Often I hold it against my chest & lay the side of my head against the guitar, so that the guitar harmonics resonate more in my head. When I do that, I write down much of what comes into my head & later I read it again. Over the decades much of that has become songs which of course are poetry set to music. It all has been my most helpful therapy.

She only got comedies and not many dramatic roles. They always based things on her sex appeal and never really got her into something deeper. It was her first foster mother, Ida Bolender, who told her to call her "Aunt' instead of "Mama." She and her husband, Albert, raised Marilyn from infancy to around age 8, when her mother briefly reclaimed her for several months. After her mother was institutionalized following a violent episode, that's when the orphanage and numerous foster homes occurred.
My heart breaks for that child and also for the woman she became. Though we hear Marilyn speak in two separate interviews I hear the same sadness, grief and mourning. Too she sounds exhausted. Someone from the children's home staff once said that the dishwashing aspect wasn't as Marilyn said or maybe that it didn't happen at all, I don't recall for sure. Whatever happened, we hear the voice of someone truly traumatized and deprived as a child and who is still affected by that trauma and deprivation as an adult.---I've seen pictures of Marilyn's mother taken over a period of many years and in only one did I not see a look of strain and anxiety. Marilyn was so cheated by life yet, having been given so little, went so far.
I would take what the orphanage staff said with a grain of salt. I was in a Central American orphanage in the '80s that catered to American families, so they had an upstanding reputation. However, sexual abuse was rampant. Of course, they adamantly denied it when several people (including me) came forward with the claims after our respective adoptions.
I worked at the orphans home where she stayed at when she was a child. It’s in Hollywood. Story is she’d look out her window and could see Paramount studio next door and say that one day she’d be a movie star. There were pics of her during her stay there. Such a sad story. It’s so heartbreaking.
Breaks my heart how this woman never knew what love was from her family. Living with an emptiness in her little heart into womanhood. She did her best to be an adult without the guidance of a role model in her younger years. Who doesn’t want to be loved in this lifetime. 😔
I love hearing Marilyn's actual voice. Her "O's" (even at the top when she says "Mortenson") at times sound like a New Jersey accent, and oddly, at other times, a Boston one. Marilyn Miller Hollywood was a horrendously chauvanistic place then and still is todat. Actresses had to work four times harder and fight four times harder to ‘make it’. If you look at the ones who did, Dietrich, Hepburn Crawford and Davis were hard tough women. Sensitive souls, Veronica Lake, Monroe, Tierney, Garland fell by the wayside to alcohol, pills and suicides because no matter how hard they tried they were not treated as artists but arm candy. Where would Monroe and co be at 60? Few survived that long.
Marilyn Monroe never really had the chance to be happy. I feel for her with this docu. Her narration is so heartbreaking it tears me up. It is said that her mother had told her once that she was an unplanned pregnancy and therefore was unwanted child. The cruelty of her biological parents is unthinkable. Of course her father didn't say anything. He was gone before she could even talk.
If she got through her childhood only to become one of the most famous people in this world then you can get through anything. I know that if I was in her shoes I probably would have just stayed home all day and shut out the rest of the world, but not her. She really is an inspiration and we all should learn from her. Never let the darkness get to you. Always shine like she did.
Most children with horrific childhoods become artistic in some way. But they still carry that childhood trauma throughout their life. And it becomes their downfall. Either drugs, depression or multiple toxic relationships!!

For Norma Jeane to have lived such a deprived childhood, she had the strength, will power and determination of an army (whom she later entertained in Korea). She was an optimist and I think deep down in her soul that she was determined for greatness. I think her acting career provided a positive outlet for her recessed emotions from early childhood. I went to forster care from 8yrs to 28yrs so yes as a man it still to this day or when I see a famous celebrity like herself it makes me wonder that I'm not the only one who has experienced something like this

Her sister was even younger and occasionally, in desperation called her "Mummy". My friend snapped at her. I thought she was being cruel, but I now understand her reaction. It was fear.

I could relate to Marilyn Monroe in so many ways. I didn’t had a father figure, my mother was and is still is mentally unstable. I felt what she felt when she was in a psych ward. To me it felt like I had no control over my life, and I felt vulnerable and in my lowest point. I feel sympathy for her.

Why can’t adults realize how their words affect kids so strongly?… it feels like so many adults are jaded through hardship and they pass that brutality of words onto children, not realizing how damaging the delivery is. I worked at the orphans home where she stayed at when she was a child. It’s in Hollywood. Story is she’d look out her window and could see Paramount studio next door and say that one day she’d be a movie star. There were pics of her during her stay there. Such a sad story. It’s so heartbreaking.

I love hearing Marilyn's actual voice. Her "O's" (even at the top when she says "Mortenson") at times sound like a New Jersey accent, and oddly, at other times, a Boston one. Even though she's born and bred in L.A. But the humanity in her voice, in the best of ways, is a far cry from her movie star voice.

This could have been recorded when she was living in New York. I never heard about any English couple , but certainly could have been. She did study in Manhattan at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg however.
Especially such a rejecting mother :( she must have been a charming child. She blames herself for her abandonment. The heartbreak. I can only listen and think about her when I feel strong.

Marilyn Monroe is a great example of goodness,perseverance and a rich sweet Spirit!!...To have such unstable and crazy childhood She did so much to keep hereself focus..I could see that going to the movies all day Saturdays and Sundays influenced her in her scape from such ugly reality No mother presence, no father s love and support. ..moreover this experience fed her imagination in art creativity!!..So many kids today with such instability become bitter ,ugly,and mad ..she ,on the contrary used her back and foward going to different Foster homes to enrich her spirit.. I imagine how sad she was but God knows how to help children in despair..Its Wonderful and Honest the way she describes her sad chilhood with that human touch she always had!!..To me Marilyn Monroe was a very sensitive,honest,good,person ahead of her time ,she knew who she was ,she knew her potential as a creative Artist and actress....as a sensual creature...She knew to be herself in any situation....Its sad the lack of help from Hollywood ,they knew she was good..come on it was 1950s ,there were so many great actors she could perform with..Its a Paul Newman and wife Woodworth, Betty Davis,Karl Gable (at list she did "The Mistfit " with him)Marlon Brandon,Sydney Poitier, Frank Sinatra,Rita H.,etc,etc,etc...actors that could do drama with her ..or intelligent comedies..She was a natural comedian...come on why not ??? Marilyn Miller Hollywood was a horrendously chauvanistic place then and still is todat. Actresses had to work four times harder and fight four times harder to ‘make it’. If you look at the ones who did, Dietrich, Hepburn Crawford and Davis were hard tough women. Sensitive souls, Veronica Lake, Monroe, Tierney, Garland fell by the wayside to alcohol, pills and suicides because no matter how hard they tried they were not treated as artists but arm candy. Where would Monroe and co be at 60? Few survived that long.
Marilyn Monroe never really had the chance to be happy. I feel for her with this docu. Her narration is so heartbreaking it tears me up. It is said that her mother had told her once that she was an unplanned pregnancy and therefore was unwanted child. The cruelty of her biological parents is unthinkable. Of course her father didn't say anything. He was gone before she could even talk.

I know that if I was in her shoes I probably would have just stayed home all day and shut out the rest of the world, but not her. She really is an inspiration and we all should learn from her. Most children with horrific childhoods become artistic in some way. But they still carry that childhood trauma throughout their life. And it becomes their downfall. Either drugs, depression or multiple toxic relationships!!

For Norma Jeane to have lived such a deprived childhood, she had the strength, will power and determination
of an army (whom she later entertained in Korea). She was an optimist and I think deep down in her soul that she was determined for greatness. I think her acting career provided a positive outlet for her recessed emotions from early childhood. Marilyn, you are as much an amazement in death to us all as you were in life dear woman. Very sad but not a rare story for a child in care this is why they become so scared for the rest of their life. She did rise above it all but never truly recovered. Looked for approval all of her life and never found what she really needed parents.

You had to learn that it was nothing to do with who you are, your personality or appearance. You will have simply thought yourself unworthy of love. My best friend at school lost her Mum at 11. Her sister was even younger and occasionally, in desperation called her "Mummy". My friend snapped at her. I thought she was being cruel, but I now understand her reaction. It was fear.

Ange La You have to interrupt yourself when you're having those thoughts and tell yourself that what you're feeling is how you've been programmed to think in childhood. You have to de-program yourself and instead think logically. We are all warned that nobody ever "completes" us anyway. As Iylana said when asked if she believes in soul mates: "Yes, I am my own soul mate." Be good to yourself. You 100% deserve to be happy.

I used to wonder why, but when i hear about her childhood, I understand why. He related to and empathised with little Norma Jean, that was behind the glamorous icon.
MM was such an adorable little girl too, amazing that she remained a foster child instead of being adopted.
As someone stated a few times further up, ~ her mother never signed anything to have her adopted out, so that is why she had bounced around from foster home to foster home ..
I could relate to Marilyn Monroe in so many ways. I didn’t had a father figure, my mother was and is still is mentally unstable. I felt what she felt when she was in a psych ward. To me it felt like I had no control over my life, and I felt vulnerable and in my lowest point. I feel sympathy for her.

I always saw Marilyn as my grandmother and imagined her as such🤍 I love her so so much with all my heart and I am beyond sad and hurt that she experienced al this. I just want to give her the biggest most warmest hug and tell her how strong she is and that she is never alone and will always be loved. She is absolutely wonderful and I cried a little watching this video…may her beautiful soul rest in peace and find happiness and love forever❤️ I love her so so much.

I believe, the hurt inside her, was so deep, the odds were against her, for a chance at a normal, happy, life. I didn’t have the happiest family, life, however, nothing compared to Marilyn. I count my blessings and thank God, every day.
That girl was intelligent and had a good heart. She was a victim of circumstance and will be resurrected to a paradise earth where Jehovah will give her a chance like so many others to worship him and be a Christian example eventually if she chooses to do so, to live forever on earth.

Why can’t adults realize how their words affect kids so strongly?… it feels like so many adults are jaded through hardship and they pass that brutality of words onto children, not realizing how damaging the delivery is. Sensitivity in language would at least lessen the harshness of reality to a child who is trying to comprehend things beyond their age and understanding.
Her voice is so soft and truthful, like someone mentioned here as a child because she never really got to be a child, I feel like. Always longing for love and sincere comfort. I didn't know this about her, to hear her makes me sad all that she lived is nothing to what her photos and scenes show. It truly was a show, how sad.
