I first got into Moomin when I watched that compilation of him having too much fun voicing Snufkin and now I’ve rewatch the whole Moomin Series at least three times (not including the times that I just listen to it while doing other stuff)
It's almost surreal to think this person is behind Snufkin since I'd never actually bothered to research/look him up when I first got into Moomins. He seems like such a chill dude! I love his energy, you can tell he really enjoys what he does and it's interesting to see him insight into the VA industry/being an actor in general. It's so funny to think that the VAs from Moomin had no direction, just lines, so all of the weird sounds, exclamations and quirks to the Moomin dub that made me laugh so much came out naturally. I got a little excited every time his voice shifted just a little bit towards what Snufkin sounded like. Also, I would've never thought he was involved in theatre! Nice little surprise, might look up if there are any clips on yt of his performances. I wish this video would've come around a little earlier for that last part since a few months ago I did an interview similar to this one with a film director and was a nervous wreck the minutes before (> .
His voice always stood up for me when I was watching the 90s. I was very curious to learn more about the voice actor, and finally, when we stumbled upon his profile, and I saw the "contact" button, I decided to take a chance. Didn't expect this could work! :D I couldn't find any theater clips, but I didn't really search thoroughly, so not quite sure. Oh, how interesting! You did an interview! John Chancer!! WHAT AN ICON!! 💕 I’m so glad to hear he’s well and still doing acting work. It’s interesting think how that director’s decision is probably what solidified Little’s My’s english name pronunciation in all future products, otherwise we would probably be hearing it as “Mi” in modern Moomin. Also, he didn’t realize it, but he actually was working off of the original dubbing as even though Moomins is a Finnish franchise, the 90s show was actually made in Japan.

John's voice brought the ultimate Snufkin energy. Even when the other voice actors changed, I kept coming back for that sweet Snufkin hit. Also the fact it was a "double translation," each line was recorded in a vacuum, no one had any direction and he didn’t think much about it explains a lot, lol. You can't replicate that kind of chaotic genius. And the Bob Dylan/Fonzie connection makes a lot of sense: Snuf traveling with his harmonica and his fake aloof older cousin energy. I love seeing how many new fans are coming into this ❤ The first time I heard John's Snufkin my immediate reaction was 'wow, it's weird to hear Snufkin Not sound like he smokes like he did in the books.' But he did a good job with the prompts he had, the Fonz is not the worst inspiration.
John Chancer was also the voice actor for John Cooper from the game 1 desperados, and he is one of the characters that I love in gaming , so thank you for your contribution to making this character as well. This is one of my favorite games ❤❤❤❤

Very good job and a very interesting and fantastic interview. John Chancer is a very good talented guy with a very good voice ever. I love the Moomin 1990 series and is a very huge hit of a classical favorite in Norway. We Norwegians love Moomin and Tove Jansson. I love the Norwegian voice and the English voice of Snufkin as well.
I've been watching Moomins since 2019 thanks to social media. Thought it was just a joke but it wasn't and it's now one of my interests as of now. Can't blame the fandom for hyping up Snufkin.

The voice director he's referring to at 7:27 is Pat Griffiths, I believe. She was also voice director on the English dub of another show around the same time called "The Twins of Destiny", which featured a lot of the same English voice cast though I don't recall John Chancer being in that dub.
I'd love to know what Toni is up to now, there's not much I can find about her, as I think she hasn't got much of a presence on the internet, the last voice acting role she did was back in 2002. Maybe she's retired from acting to work a normal career or to raise a family?

I am ALSO a newer Moomin enthusiast! My Gosh I LOVE the Moomins! My favorite is the 90's animation! I have a question! Is John Chancer Canadian or American? I cannot find that information anywhere! I assumed the English Dub was Canadian because it's so well done! The Canadians did BEAUTIFUL animation dubs in the 80's and 90's! They are my FAVORITE dubbers! (I don't know if they are as good as they used to be...) See - Americans ALWAYS OVER-DO their voice acting. It's so irritating! They add too much music and too many sound effects and basically YELL everything they are saying! Canadians are more subtle and relaxing.
He is actually British. But I think he has a near to perfect standard American accent. I think over-doing VO is more of a franchise thing. The style of a film. And I agree, I find it very irritating, too. That's why, with my acting classes, VO is really not my fav. :D They teach us to over-do it for the market purposes. :)) Even though we are in Canada. Go figure.

That's so weird that he sees Snufkin as "The Fonze"/Bob Dylan! To me - Snufkin is an Introvert/Philosopher/Existentialist (a TRUE one, not one who only TALKS about it)/ponderer of life/wise man/One who enjoys being alone with nature. COMPLETELY OPPOSITE of those characters.

I am ALSO a newer Moomin enthusiast! My Gosh I LOVE the Moomins! My favorite is the 90's animation! I have a question! Is John Chancer Canadian or American? I cannot find that information anywhere! I assumed the English Dub was Canadian because it's so well done! The Canadians did BEAUTIFUL animation dubs in the 80's and 90's! They are my FAVORITE dubbers! (I don't know if they are as good as they used to be...) See - Americans ALWAYS OVER-DO their voice acting. It's so irritating! They add too much music and too many sound effects and basically YELL everything they are saying! Canadians are more subtle and relaxing.
Oh! And i forgot to add that Snufkin is my favorite character!

He is actually British. But I think he has a near to perfect standard American accent.
I think over-doing VO is more of a franchise thing. The style of a film. And I agree, I find it very irritating, too. That's why, with my acting classes, VO is really not my fav. :D They teach us to over-do it for the market purposes. :)) Even though we are in Canada. Go figure.
