    my professor made an interesting connection with the dream/abstract world with Midge, as she is a painter and her room is full of abstract images. Compared to Gavin's office which is pretty grounded and straightforward. It's interesting after watching this video, the so-called "dream girl" of Midge is really the more grounded whereas the more apparently grounded world of getting involved with Gavin was ultimately the fake.

    Trivia: The Italian title for Vertigo is 'The Woman Who Lived Twice', a pretty big spoiler.

    • @poporkine
      @poporkine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Well, that could be seen in two ways: one is that Carlotta is the woman who lived twice, once in her own body and then again in Madeleine/Judy's body; this is what the audience will probably associate the name of the movie with and since this theory comes early in the film it isn't really a big spoiler, however we later discover that Gavin fooled Scottie using him as a witness to lend credence to the idea that Madeleine was mentally unstable. So that brings us to the other way to see the title: after Judy (pretending to be the real Madeleine) supposedly commits suicide she meets Scottie again, but this time her real self, Judy. Later on, she dies for real and so the title signifies that Judy lived and died twice, one as Madeleine and again as her real self. In this way, the spectactor thinks he's figured out the meaning of the title early in the beggining of the movie to then later on discover the real meaning. I know this because I'm portuguese and the portuguese title is "A mulher que viveu duas vezes" which also transalates to "The Woman Who Lived Twice" in english, and this was my reaction while watching the movie

    If anything, Vertigo should be delved into as deeply as you analyzed Mulholland Drive and A Clockwork Orange. It's such a complex film, and there's so much wall-to-wall symbolism, that I'd really like to see a full-on frame-by-frame analysis of it. Provided you had time to do that, of course.

    I re-watched Vertigo and noticed a detail I missed in other viewings: John said that it was Midge who called off their engagement. Which does conflict with your faulting John for not being with her: he thought she didn't want him.

    one of my most favourite aspects of this movie is Judy's conflicts when she is being changed into Scotty's projection.
    On one side she is struggling as her wanting to be loved for who she is,
    yet still doesn't want him to leave her and she'd do anything for his love
    on the other hand she doesn't want him to know the truth about how she had deceived him.

    • @TheTcmgirl
      @TheTcmgirl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm really curious about that as well. Scotty doesn't force Judy into transforming back to Madeline, but he coerces her into doing it because of her love for him, and her belief that if she does as he wants, he will love her for herself. Yet in that sense she lies to herself as well, because he will never love her for herself due to his obsession with making her into Madeline. I feel bad for Judy because for the entire film, she cannot be her true self, her true identity.

      @@TheTcmgirl Don't forget that Judy was an accessory to the murder of Mrs Elster. So don't feel bad as she is the cause of how this turn out

    I liked your attention to the swirl in the film with the opening animation, staircase, and hairstyle which were connections I did not see before. "Vertigo" is brilliant film making and for reasons that include all the points in your analysis.
    I would add that the soundtrack by Bernard Herman is great because it is so hypnotic. That coupled with the use of vivid colors splashed on the screen create a blur between dream and reality. You touch on this and how John fell into it. But the power of the film includes that not only is the actor falling into a dream trance but that Hitchcock is working on the minds of the audience as if it was mass hypnosis.

    You forgot Madeline's green car! ;) And I like to think the green symbolism is also tied to good, old-fashioned Jealousy. For me, John's intense and self-seeking desire for Madeline/Judy is represented by the ever-present green hues.

    I like to analyze Vertigo in terms of its humor; after all, Hitchcock remarked that ALL of his films contain an element of humor. The viewer could chuckle at, "This poor fellow just can't get a break--try as hard as he can, even though driven by obsession." He is the ultimate loser in love. The viewer can take solace, relief and humor in this regard; a macabre humor, but humor nonetheless.

  • @gregisom45
    @gregisom45 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still believe that people are all wrong understanding this movie. I believe the entire second act is all inside Scottie's mind, figuring out the situation he's in. There's too many holes in the second act( finding Judy ; finding her room number, driving to a church in the middle of the night and the watchtower is not locked)It doesn't make sense because it's not suppose to. Notice how loud the bells are ringing at the end, as if it's an alarm clock, waking Scottie up from his delusion.

    Vertigo is a weird film for me, as I studied it in school and wrote quite a long essay about the film. However the essay was meant to be more focused on the films critical reception and why it was initially panned as one of Hitchcock's worst works, which involved looking quite in depth and writing about problems people had with the film, which inadvertently ended up making me much more critical of the film than I probably should have been. Maybe one of these days I'll try to re-watch the film with a more open-minded perspective.

      Hitchcock kept some of his movies out of circulation. Some say he did it, as a kind of trust fund for his heirs. 'Cus after his death Universal acquired those movies back for $5 million. They were: Vertigo,, Rope, Rear Window, The Trouble with Harry, The Man Who Knew Too Much.
