      +HVAC/R Junky But as he showed in the tube all the way to the right, some times a crack is present with no really good sign in respect to the flame. You always need to do a visual to make sure no cracks are present. I have a fiber optic camera to snake in the tubes without having to take the whole burner assembly apart. I found cracks in 4 or 5 burners in a 20 year old furnace today. Small enough to not show in the flame but large enough that I condemned the appliance.

      I'm going to start doing a lot more residential heating and cooling calls so I've been watching as many videos as I can to sharpen in my skills.thanks for the advice

    when the flame flickered and had that orange glow at the top i knew it was a crack in the heat exchanger. normally when there is a crack in the heat exchanger the gas fumes will go into the blower air and u will smell a slight burning dust type smell. this happened to me at the apartment i live in and i went out and bought a utility heater to keep warm in the winter, i did however tell maintenance about it and they took a month to fix it.

    nice cracks in the combustion chamber. That furnace had seen better days for sure.

      +George W Boy, that's for sure. Got another one coming out that is quite surprising.

    Ive never seen a furnace with a burner design like that, be a 90% unit. Strange indeed.

    I've been told that cracked heat exchanger means new furnace. Why can't the heat exchanger be replaced like everything else?

    • @bpscottland74
      @bpscottland74 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it can be replace but most of the time its not worth it because of the share cost of replacing a heat exchanger if it's out of warranty if it's in warranty will just be charged labor on the technician to replace the heat exchanger but most the time it's just work to replace the furnace unless it's a commercial application.

      Furnaces have grown in safety and efficiency over the decades, If you have one lets say from the early 1990's or late 80's or even one of a cheaper make from the early 2000's that starts behaving in such a way like that then i would think the unit has seen it's days and it's time to invest in getting a newer furnace

      The heat exchanger is usually more than a new furnace. Because manufacturers don't want to stock the parts for old furnaces, so they make them very expensive.

      If the warrenty covers it then you should replace the heat exchanger.

    Glad that thing is removed from service. It's a death trap. All that CO coming in with the warm air.

    that looks like a natural draft 80% furnace but it has an inducer so it isnt.

      Its one of the morphodite furnaces in the late 1980s.

      +The Rambling engineer. Interested to know why you think the inducer has failed.

      +grayfurnaceman 48 hours no sleep is why i said inducer, what i meant was the main blower.

      +The Rambling engineer. You probably heard was a piece of insulation that fell into the blower.

      +grayfurnaceman Just by looking at those cracks it is indeed oblivious that it's about time for whoever owned that furnace to retire it
