    I am legally blind and color blind and am still learning how to read Braille! The problem is, I can never keep a teacher for long. However, I think I finally got me a teacher who is willing to stay there for me and not quit on me just because I am different or because they get a new opportunity somewhere else! I am not going to lie, it is really hard self - esteem wise since I have been learning for a few years now and am still learning, but I am not giving up! In Braille in the United States, there are what are called contractions, meaning symbols for letter combinations and short forms for words! Thanks! God bless you! =^D

    • @khanhhm5762
      @khanhhm5762 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Hi:
      I’m sorry you’ve had teachers quit on you; that is so hurtful and frustrating. But I’m glad you’re persisting with learning braille. It definitely helps with literacy.
      Also when Lucy was talking about grade 2, those are contractions, and it’s referred to that way in the States. It’s just that the grades make a distinction: Grade one equals uncontracted, grade two equals the contractions as you said, and grade three is a form of shorthand, even more contracted than grade two.
      I’m an avid braille reader and can’t imagine my life without it.

      Glad you have a teacher of the visually impaired willing to stay and work with you on learning contracted, formerly known as grade 2 braille. Consistency and practicing every day under your teachers guidance will help a great deal. Keep being persistent and don't give up. Braille literacy is vital.

      Blindness is a wide spectrum and very complex; it is also incredibly personal, and so unless you know the person, asking for very specific details can be invasive. I’m only telling you this so that you may be more aware; I don’t know you, so I’ll assume that you didn’t ask from a bad place, you asked because you don’t understand. And I get that.
      In very general terms, it is possible, for example, for someone to have very little or no vision in one eye while the other eye can see everything else except colors. There’s still a lot we don’t know or understand about the eyes. Variations of blindness are infinite.

      Try finding TH-camrs you like, who make content in your target language. Just put on english subtitles and watch, that way you will always find the motivation to keep learning.
      When I started learning english I watched a lot of Dude Perfects trickshot videos. Their Trickshots are impressive no matter what language you speak and the vocabulary was mostly limited to "this is the..." and a name, they gave their trickshots.
      That way I learned a few words with every video I watched, after some time I was able to watch other content, someday I began to watch with english subtitles instead of the german ones. And now I don't need subtitles at all.

      Coldmirror does comedy
      MaiLab makes videos about science
      Kurzgesagt also makes videos about mostly science and has an english TH-cam channel as well.
      I think that a guy named Julien Bam has made some trickshot videos, but I think his target audience is pretty young and I've never watched his videos, so I don't know if they are good.

    It’s so interesting to hear each blind person’s journey with braille. I started as a child because I’ve been blind from birth. And I can’t imagine my life without it. No amount of speech technology can replace tactile musical notations or computer code. If I hadn’t known braille, I wouldn’t have been able to participate in sight reading and music theory exercises with my choir mates.
    That’s awesome you’re brushing up on grade two. Braille literacy is definitely a huge issue in the blind community.

    • @joannestark3023
      @joannestark3023 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I think sighted teachers of the vieasually impaired should be able to read braille with either their fingers or their eyes. If you know how to read it with your fingers (and it doesn't necessarily have to be rapid either, but enough to describe to a totally blind student the motions involved from a nonvisual standpoint) you can offer another perspective to braille learners you teach.

    • @tracyfitch4873
      @tracyfitch4873 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joannestark3023In school, when learning how to teach braille, we do actually have to do blindfolded lessons. I can read it with my fingers with my eyes closed, but I would be scrubbing a lot and it would take way longer. But, we do lots of lessons under blind fold to get an understanding of what it’s like to be blind so we can be better teachers, like going on public transit, using a public bathroom, making our bed, cooking, eating a meal out, etc. all under blindfold. They actually used to have this experience called Dialogue in the Dark where you go through this whole experience in pitch black and a blind guide taking you through and then sit, still in the dark, and discuss your experience.

    Thank you! I was dying to know! It seems so very difficult to me, I'm quite impressed at how little it took you to learn. I frequently touch the braille on elevators and medicine boxes with my eyes closed to check if I can feel the individual "dots"... And every time I fail big time 😂 But I also have hyperhidrosis so I would probably destroy all my braille documents with my sweat 🥴

    If it's ok to ask: Why did you already learn it, when you were still sighted? Did you know, that you would loose your sight? Stay safe! You inspire me and a lot of my friends!

      It's important to learn to read nonvisually and so much more without vision (typically under a blindfold) so the confidence with the new techniques and skill(s) is already firm when vision deteriorates further. A safety net, so she'd have something to fall back on later when reading print would be too much of a struggle.

      When we know a student has a progressive condition, we always start teaching them braille young. Just like with any skill, the younger the better as your brain retains things better when learned at a younger age. And, then when the person loses more of their vision and NEEDS braille, they have those foundational skills and tactile awareness to help them pick it up quicker.

      Where did you go to school? In the US that is illegal. The Braille Bill essentially states that every child who is visually impaired will learn braille by default and if they don’t need braille, we have to prove why they are efficient readers using another medium, like large print or magnification.

    My cousin was born blind and she learned braille in school. She's also teaching it to her blind daughters, even though they insist it's old school. But she insists that independent living means learning it all.

    • @joannestark3023
      @joannestark3023 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great work your cousin is doing with her kids. Yes, learning to live as a blind person really does include learning to read braille. There are refreshable braille displays that can pair with iPhones and other devices to facilitate reading e-books and such, so the kids' assertion that reading braille is somehow outdated does not hold water. Braille literacy will never die, and there are many blind children who do not receive adequate quality instruction because of the shortage of qualified teachers of the visually impaired.

    To be said, Everyone SHOULD learn Braille since you can get blind anytime, so the sooner you learn, the better. I don't say that everyone will be, I say everyone could potentially be blind. Sorry if I offended you guys, thanks.
