    Nice vid! This was my first PC, and I still have mine. It's in mint condition, but now sitting inside my garage. Paid $1400 new for it back in 1993. I also met my wife on it, in an AOL chat room and music posting area! I'm still married to her 20 years later, and have a daughter. THANK YOU 'Color Classic'... LOL!

      AudiophileTubes Take it out while you still can before it damages the logic board. When you take it out, it won't remember time - but that is a small price to pay when compared to a corroded, unusable logic board stained with battery acid. TH-cam user BBISHOPPCM has a video of an SE that he bought that was totally damaged by a exploding battery.

      1912RamblerFan01 Very true - I lost the logic board on one of my Colour Classics to that very problem. Thankfully, all of my other Macs were OK, as I removed the batteries before putting them into storage.

    Jason very nice demonstration of the mac color classic. I had one in 1993. The previous owner sold it to me saying the hard drive wasn't working. I purchased and opened it finding that a resistor looked bad and the area smelled like a PCB burn usually does. I re soldered it and put in a new one. If I had known that there was so much more expandability I would have kept it. I was a desktop publisher at the time and bought the machine for working on at home. Because of my poor knowledge of the machine and not real way of getting information for expanding it myself. I sold it. I am now on disability and would love one.

    SuperDrive cut-out is unusual but there has to be some cut-out to let a person push the floppy disk all the way in to a non-auto-inject SuperDrive.
    Also the "Colour Classic" is cut out so that in other regions it could be called "Color Classic"

      I'm not sure how FoolProof works. Have you tried the programmer switch trick? This was a common way of killing At Ease.
      On any old mac with a programmer switch, you can force the computer to dump you back to the finder by typing in:
      SM 0 A9F4
      G 0
      ...Or alternately G FINDER can work too, which is the classic way people did it, but it's less reliable. Either way, if you can get to the finder with full access you can generally turn off whatever security it has in its control panel.
      There's also this: freaky.staticusers.net/textfiles/FoolProofHack.txt
      I'm actually surprised that site is still around, hah. It hasn't been updated since 2003ish.

    I'm going to assume that of the vintage compact all-in-one Macs, this might be one of the better collectibles, supposedly? I mean, nothing against the original B&W screens, but somehow, to see a Sony Trinitron for color, as well as the expandability in this, it could be a step above the SE/30. Trying to think, though.

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SE/30 had a better system bus without the weird 10MB hard cap. It wasn't 32-bit clean, though, so it wouldn't run anything beyond 7.5.5. If anything were the pinnacle of the compact macs, it would be the Color Classic II, aka Performa 275. The Color Classic II was essentially the innards of the LC 550 in the case of the Color Classic. Sadly, they were only released in select countries, which did not include the US.
      Performance-wise, the Color Classic II was most similar to the LC III+, the later 33MHz version of the LC III. The Performa 550 was also based on this revision of the LC III, so it also has similar performance.
      Then again, with the Mystic upgrade (swapping out the logic board and back panel for the one from an LC 575), you could make either version of the Color Classic a decent beast. There are even upgrade instructions for putting a 5000-series logic board into the case of the color classic, but that's a more difficult procedure that's only worth it if you absolutely have to have the smaller design or don't want the larger (but inferior technology) display.

When I push the disk into the slot, it goes about ¾ of the way but does not drop fully into the drive. I use a paperclip to safely remove the disk after each attempt. The "Color" Classic you show is, I believe, a "Colour" Classic, so one made for the European, rather than the American market. Or were some of those sold in any part of America (Canada, perhaps) also labelled with the "correct" spelling?

    • @themacintoshmuseum
      @themacintoshmuseum 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Neale You are correct - this is a "Colour Classic", as it was sold in Australia. However, as most people search for "Color Classic" when looking for information on this model, I used the American spelling when naming the video.
      When sold in the US, they were badged as "Color Classic".

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the first compact mac to have a built-in color screen. The first mac to have a color option at all was the Mac II, but that was neither a compact mac nor a built-in screen. The first Powerbook to have a color screen (the 165c) was released the same day as the Color Classic, so in reality they both share the honor of being the first macs with built-in color screens.

  • @ltlk937

    Good sir i think that second memory slot was not what you are thinking it was. It is an EDO ram slot. 72 pin i believe 10NS ram. I had a somewhat newer one of these that had That slot populated that had and 8 mb stick of ram in it. Its been a long time but i think i am remembering this correctly.

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The video was correct, that slot was used for a VRAM expansion module. The newer Color Classic II, which was based on the LC III's architecture instead of the LC II's, did have a 72-pin RAM slot, as well as the same VRAM slot seen here. The Color Classic II was only sold in select countries, though, so it's not nearly as common.
      Also worth noting, all of the Macs that had 72-pin SIMM slots used FPM memory, not EDO. You could still use EDO modules in most of these Macs, but they wouldn't use the EDO function and would run as FPM. Also, the memory was typically between 80 and 60ns, with the later Quadras and NuBus-based PowerMacs requiring the 60ns version.
      By the way, 10ns memory would be running at roughly 100MHz, while 60ns memory is at about 16.7MHz, much closer to what the systems of the time would have their system buses running at.

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm assuming you meant the Pippin, which was a collaboration between Apple and Bandai. The poor thing never really took off, partially because it tried too hard to merge an internet box with a game console, and partly because they didn't really have any good titles for it. Oh, and the relatively high price for it, which really killed demand.
      It's a bit ironic, really, when you compare it with recent consoles like the XBOX 360, XBOX One, PS3, and PS4. It blended the online experience with gaming, just like the modern consoles, but the market and the technology weren't ready for the idea yet.

    • @evknucklehead
      @evknucklehead 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nobody ever made 1GB or 512MB memory modules that would fit in the Color Classic, or any machine that used 30-pin SIMMs. The highest capacity I've ever heard of on a 30-pin SIMM is 16MB, and the Color Classic couldn't even use those. By the time memory modules could hold 512MB+, we'd moved on to SDRAM on DIMMs. Aside from that, as mentioned in the video, the memory controller had a hard limit of 10MB, and would not recognize anything beyond that.
      Then again, you could put a 1GB+ SCSI Hard Drive into the Color Classic, but if you got too much higher than that you'd run into the limitations of Apple's original Hierarchical File System, and the Color Classic didn't support MacOS 8.1+ to run HFS+, nor could it boot from an HFS+ volume because it wasn't a PowerMac.
      Also, there is the limitation of all Pre-OS X Mac System Software that prevents a single application from accessing more than 999MB at a time, even if the system has more than that installed. Of course, that only ever came up on G4-based Macs, as nothing earlier than that could even hold more than 1GB of RAM.

    Hi. My very first Mac was the LC575 but the Color Classic (I had one before and an SE) is my favorite Mac by far coz' it's the cutest, very approachable and cuter than the 1st iMac which was cute but kind of too flamboyant, or the iMacs today, or even the mini or G5 Cube (the new designs are intimidating or dorky w/ the Performas), the Mac LC with it's slimness and lines also has a good design as well as the IIGS without the monitor and the Apple IIc with the cute iMac like sunflower like monitor- they are timeless designs in the approchable design category. Those 4 Apple computers are by far like a really nice cool friend- not too wimpy not too cool or intimidating, except maybe for the iMac G4 which is cute too but it's too feminine, little weak looking/dorky.
    The CC was designed by Daniele De Luliis and was supposed to be the design for the 10th anniversary Macintosh (I guess 10 years the anniversary Mac would be the TAM. If Apple does an anniversary using the Mac line every 20 years, the next one would be in 2017- just 2 years to go, we must save up for one now- I hope Ive will put all the approachable cute but not wimpy design of those 4 Apple computers above instead of being too elite looking like a prince, maybe just a little ).
    The Computer Chronicles' what got me into Macs when it showed how fast the PowerPC was against the Pentium. 21 years as a Mac user.
    By the way this also has one of the rarest, one of the most impressive Apple collection from Russia. It's free to visit it. If you can get there, maybe make a documentary a detailed one:
    rt.com/news/prime-time/collections-orders-ducks-apple-493/
    Here's a more detailed article on it by a IIgs blogger:
    www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/russian-apple-museum-or-the-ebay-black-hole-to-be-found-in-moscow/
    But you can do better - a documentary of that museum (I think they all have the Apple stuff except the Apple I or the first Apple II).
    God bless. Rev. 21:4
