- Ukraine is warning against 'destructive external interference' in Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria. This, after pro-Russia separatists there asked Moscow for „protection". It's the same overture used by separatists in eastern Ukraine a decade ago.
The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is a tiny sliver of land located between Ukraine and Moldova - they were both Soviet Republics. Transnistria broke away from Moldova during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.
People identifying as 'Russian' - many of them hold Russian citizenship - make up a sizable minority in Transnistria. And tensions have been rising ever since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
For more on this, we talk to freelance journalist Mircha Barbu, who joins us from just outside Chisinau, the capital of Moldova.

Moldova's constitution says that the language of Moldova is Romanian so perhaps Modlova should seek protection from Romania? Another thing that confuses me is that Russia does not recognize dual citizenship so it should welcome the 50% of Transnistrians to Russia and the remainder can have a referendum to join Moldova. Romania (a NATO and EU member) guarantee the independence of Moldova. Romania wants to reunite with Moldova but they want union peacefully.

@@napoleonbonaparte4396 ~60% of Romanians (and >40% of Moldovans) are in favor of unification. A decent percentage of those against reunion are because of Transnistria and the Russians. These are from recent polls (admittedly done before the current Russian War;)

Legitimate self-determination does not allow for inviting foreign powers to come and 'liberate' you from your home nation. That's actually how foreign conquest is initiated.
Sooo, suddenly Transnistria is afraid that Moldova will attack them. I'd think that if Moldova were able to attack them, they would have done it already. It is troubling that another front might be opened in the Russian-Ukrainian war but i honestly don't see how Russia would supply troops stationed in Transnistria from Russia. They can't seem to supply troop stationed just across the border from Russia.

In total between 20-30 million Russians live outside of Russia. 3.5 mln in Kazachstan, 3.1 mln in the US, 1.8 mln in Brazil, and 1.2 mln in Germany. Sending them back is the best course of action to ensure peace with Russia, it seems.

For the same reason the children of Europeans don't leave Canada, Argentina, USA, New Zealand, and give the land back to the native population.
Maybe because for centuries it was their land and their ancestors'? Transnistria is older than Moldova and has nothing to do with it, it was inhabited by Russians back in the 18th century. Now mostly Russians and Ukrainians live there.

There was no 'entry of Russian citizens'. No agents. Transnistria is simply their home and they're not romanians and dont' want to be part of Romania (Moldova soon be part of it, as it seems).

if the people of Transnistria decide to join Russia so be it. Russia will welcome them. to those who claim that this is in any way "illegal", look at what you have done to Serbia. you came in into an independent country of Serbia under a false pretext, you occupied a part of it, which is Kosovo. you expelled the lawful Serbian authorities from it. you arranged a vote in Kosovo and made everything in order to create an independent country out of it. this was illegal as it happened, but since it happened, and the west has supported it, there is a precedent. so this is not illegal anymore to do the same in any part of the world. anybody else, just any region of any country populated with a sufficient number of Russians can hold a vote and leave that country.
But in reality, it's just gonna make foreign governments leery of having a large russian diaspora due to these fears....kinda like the Palestinians

I didn't forget that, western troll. the west claimed there were over 100,000 Kosovo Albanians killed by Serbs, and used it as a pretext. however this was never confirmed. the number of Kosovo Albanians killed was around 3500 with a majority being the fighters from the Kosovo Liberation Army. when Serbian authorities were illegally expelled from Kosovo, NATO took over control of Kosovo. so new branches of economy emerged, such as collecting organs primarily kidneys from remaining Serbs. so the overall number of Serbian victims including those killed during NATO bombing was actually higher compared to Albanian victims. so the argument of ethnic cleansing did not stand the time.
Moldova should ask NATO for protection against the Russian aggressor.

@@d.ink3d Nobody stole anything from Moldova. Moldova was part of the Soviet Union, and the region that is now called "Transnistria" was a part of Moldova. When the Soviet Union was breaking apart, the region of "Transnistria" declared independence from Moldova and became an autonomous region within the USSR. At this stage Moldova was still part of the USSR and had not declared independence. It was only afterwards that Moldova broke away from the USSR and became an independent country. Moldova then laid claim to the territory of Transnistria and demanded it to be recognised as part of Moldova. But Transnistria was not part of Moldova by then, it had declared itself an autonomous Soviet republic and was still part of the Soviet Union.
Then when the Soviet Union was fully dissolved, Russia made an agreement with Transnistria (who were both now independent countries) to send peacekeeping troops there to ensure its independence.

What claim does Moldova have on Transnistria exactly? I understand Transnistria is a deeply corrupt mafia state, but it was established BEFORE Moldova, and its population is mostly Russian, in a region of what was formerly Romania but has long been settled by Russians during medieval wars of conquest, later during soviet times. I'm not trying to be funny, but I genuinely don't understand Moldova's attitude towards Transnistria.
You should check more on historical background of the entire area from geopolitical perspective and other factors and understand why Moldova cant just give up on Transnistria, while everything in Transnistria is just artificially enforced. It's truly complex. not that simple as it might seem and how some people would think.
Actually the Russians living there were brought by Stalin,it’s an old soviet tradition to deport the natives, bring some Russians then play victim that they’re the ones that are discriminated. They did it in Finland, Ukraine, Georgia Moldova , Crimea , The Baltic states,Manciuria , Kuril Islands …

Nobody officially recognizes Transnistria as a country, not even Russia so your proposition is not really valid. Russia played a number on Moldova for 30 years in regards to Transnistria. For example he gas deliveries all run through Transnistria. Russia then comes with a bill for 10 mil cubic meters. Moldova says it only got 7 the rest must have went to Transnistria. And then Putin is like "What is this Transnistria you speak of?", that is not a real country. Pay up...

Therefore, there may be Transnistrians with Russian citizenship or ethnically Russian Transnistrians with Moldovan citizenship.

Really? You saw what happened in Kosovo when the Kosovars asked for help. The Serbs tried to reclaim the region and for this they were bombed into splinters until they had to change their mind. Do you think Moldova wish to be bombed? Not a single NATO soldier entered Serbia, but Serbs had to stop and obey. Here, Russia will also not send troops, but will destroy the economy and infrastructure of Moldova, as was done with the Serbs. Who needs it? Why you're so cruel to Moldavians?

Look, Kremlin wants to end up the war by invading Kiiv, right? Now, if they open southwestern front by passing Odessa (because the fleet is almost completely knocked out by Ukrainian drones, so they'd need to), try to count on Belarus from North there. It's alredy reported that coast between the city and peninsula is well guarded and concentration of troops is dense, so they're probably waiting for weather and political circumstances to move west. That takes out Crimea bridge highly likely, as well as the warehouse mentioned.
Also anyone should understand that even supporting those actions, only few would like obstacles same as Donbas region near and present.

@@iulianc9037 They held a referendum in 1990 according the rules in USSR. Transnistria was an autonomous region in Moldova SSR even at the time of USSR.
That's why Russia needs to secure Odessa.
