Same here, but weirdly enough I've never actually watched this movie in its entirety. I've only watched the scene with the old couple where the old man puts on his shoe and gets bit. The only reason I have watched that part was because my mom was watching the movie and I happened to walk into the room at that time. This was like 2001 or so and ever since that scene, I've ALWAYS checked my shoes.
Thrillomedy. That's a good word for it. One one hand, they build tension and have great scares with the spiders, but on the other, the acting is just so sharp and snappy you can't help but spend most of the movie chuckling. John Goodman's character alone is solid gold.

I love that the trailer plays it up really goofy, but the actual movie, while still a dark comedy, is much creepier and takes the spider threat seriously. And it makes it work! You think it'd be the silliest thing ever, but it not only works surprisingly well, it plays off a real problem in the world, invasive species getting to places they aren't meant to be.

But a curious thing happened, I started studying spiders and raising them in terrariums and taking care of them, so I gradually lost my fear and realized that they are fascinating animals. Congratulations to everyone who created this film, a horror film that was certainly the film that most marked my history!!

at one time I used to think that both Gremlins and Arachnophobia shared similar music themes but now i'm just finding out that it was because I'm remembering it wrong and it was probably this last part of the trailer music which has that similar motif as Gremlins theme.
I'm surprised this film has ROTTEN audience score on rotten tomatoes. I thought this film is loved not just by the critics, but the general audience too.

same old format like Jaws... spend 1/4 film introducing the characters and location. next 1/4 throw in a mysterious event or 5 raising suspicion and taking time for people to argue if it's really happening, 3rd 1/4 show some obvious results of the terror and how the people want action. and finish it with a confrontation which the humans win... they rehashed this format in so many movies... couple of good special fx/props in this movie of real spiders. id give it a 6/10.

It's been awhile since I've read them, but I think that the spiders emerged from a long hibernation period of thousands of years to try to ravage the world. Things get really, really bad too before they finally manage to stop these things. There was also some connection to the Nazca Lines in Peru. I think one of their eggs was found buried at the Spider Line which, in the book, was thousands of years older than the rest of the Nazca Lines. They came to the conclusion that the Spider was supposed to be a warning about these things from some long ago civilization.
