I read a lot of the comments about this episode. This is Big Dave's game, this is what he does for a living. Roland Martin is a client, Dave's job is teach him how to steelhead fish and land them. Watch the student learn that's what impressed me. I give Roland Martin credit for giving the pro at his discipline the respect he deserves.
Dave is hella cool. I see a lot of comments bashing him for his commanding Roland... The way I see it, Dave knows his shit and Roland was out of his element. Steelheading is a different animal than bass fishing. I thought Dave did an excellent job of staying positive while giving instruction especially in light of the fact that Roland was borderline senile/ADD especially on landing that buck between the boat, the bank and the anchor line. As one other commentor mentioned, "Martin doesn't take instruction well." and that is an accurate statement as Dave had to tell him 5 or 6 times to get the rod tip down or the rod out or the rod up hard to move fish away from boat, anchor and in to net... The way I see it is Roland Martin probably has a hard time being instructed because he's so damn good at what he does and it's quite unnatural for him to be 'the student' in a boat. Either way, it was really cool seeing the excitement of this EPIC veteran basser hooking, fighting and landing steelhead. I'm not sure whose life was changed the most that day, his or Big Dave's. AINT THAT THE MAGIC OF FISHING? HELL YES IT IS!!
That was a great video. That fish at the end was a stud. I like the fact that Big Dave gave a legitimate estimate of the fish's size. Most guys would have claimed that fish was over 20 pounds.
Kudos to Dave...if you were listening....you would have heard him explain how you drop slowly through the pool with your plugs and back the fish up into the tail out. Back trolling with plugs for steelhead can be obscenely effective. Black is a deadly colour. Tiring though...I did all my back trolling with the oars....usually between gear fishing the nice pools.
Great to see Roland trying new stuff! These fast moving hill country rivers are a whole new world for him I believe. Quite different from bass on Okeechobee!
Hey Dave been watching u a lot spoke to Jason at anglers west today we spoke for 45 mins I’m a a steel junkie here in the Great Lakes and guide occasionally slowly planning a trip your way Jason said your the man that knows the water hope to meet u soon and beat some chrome via doggin which I’ve introduced here in the Great Lakes region
I caught my biggest stealy on the Wilson at cedar Creek it was a native so put her back 24 lbs they are my favorite fish to catch my boss owns property from power lines to the water makes camping the best by the way you don't need a guide to hunt fish there when the fish are in omg not to mention the sea run cutthroat in late summer use the little trolling spoons made by arrow and run a legal leader with a fat piece of night crawler trialling behind and it will bring the big ones off the bottom
I call that steelhead green when the water is like that I live in forest Grove and fish the Wilson heavy enough that I can follow pods when they're coming up its more hunting than fishing
With all due respect to Dave, I find it funny when he's telling Roland Martin how to fight fish... I mean it's Roland.. The guy's caught tarpon, redfish, all kinds of fish. Just kind of ironic. I know he's just trying to land em though!
+Lineside Hunter Steelhead fishing is a whole different ballgame. If Roland Martin was acting like he knew how to land a fish in a drift boat, Dave wouldn't have had to say anything. An expert in one field doesn't always translate into an expert in another similar field. Glad they had a good time though and that last hatchery buck was a dandy!
Great show! Please list the rod specifications for the casting and spinning rods. At least factory model numbers. Looking to purchase several rods. Thanks
well steelhead fish my whole life 40 years in washington state that big steelhead that Roland caught at a Fish of life time and i would know i was guide many years
My dad would get the same way everytime there was a fish on, I would get so much adrenaline and so nervous after I netted the fish I would have to sit down and do breathing exercises. I would ne nervous to fish w Dave but at the same token od probably learn a lot
I'll remember big important person on a internet video with people who are like that of God's, with all their wisdom and light that's shines upon all us little folk
That blue rod was the first generation Angler West RH rod which has since been replaced by a much higher quality series of rods. Please see them here: www.anglerwesttv.com/AnglerWestRHRods.aspx The 7' 3 power would be the closest match to the blue rod but if Roland had the option to choose the 7' 6" or 7' 10" 4 power that we now have, I'm sure he would have used one of the longer, more powerful rods in that situation.
Rj anderson Big Dave is extremely good at getting fish in the boat. He was trying to trick the fish into coming up to the side of the boat so he could land it. With all do respect, Roland didn’t listen to him and that’s why he had to talk so much.
@@asherseverson1364 Roland has been fishing for decades. He's also wealthy. You think he doesn't or has not been offshore to haul in giants then you're dumb...
I have fished the Wilson River many times. Bank access is very limited and he was merely reminding him in a professional guide like manner if that fish goes too far down stream and catches the current they would loose that spot and would have to either launch the boat and give chase or loose the fish. The thought of grilled fresh ocean run Steelhead makes my mouth water. They are a completely different animal after being in the river system for a while such as the ones that make it up to the Snake River. By the time they get up there they taste just like another trout.
Big Dave is doing a little too much in this video. Tho he stays positive he's constantly barking out orders(many unnecessary) to Roland. And then he tries touching the rod while he's fighting a fish! The last time that happened to me I was a child. The trip should be enjoyable first and I know several fishermen who would be insulted if you touched their rod while fighting a fish.
Eddy Rico, it looked like Roland’s first time swinging and plug fishing steelhead and bass fishing is totally different from steelhead fishing and when you see a fish that size, you freak out and go crazy and that’s when you lose a fish and/or you shout orders that are easy to do that even a kid could do it but he just making sure he doesn’t lose the fish of a life time and it’s true, I’ve seen my self all the time shouting orders at people when I go to net there fish and I’m not trying to treat them like kids or that they never fished before but I’m just trying to help them out.
@@lucianj.9084 lol roland literally caught that buck with EXACTLY the same technique that he has used for decades fishing bass... With a plug AKA crankbait.... He put that plug right in the zone & he was rewarded for it...
What a combination, Roland is a legend and Dave showed him a great time
Watching roland struggle with dave's direction was so hilarious. Big Dave has mastered patience with all his years of guiding

Roland Martin trout fishing... I never thought I’d see this, dream come true!
totally aswome big dave and roland martin two of the fishing worlds greatest in one video

I was about to say basically the same thing. I laughed a few times myself. Dave was great.
Roland extremely out of his element, comical really..
Agreed. Roland was out of his element but, c'mon! How many times do you have to say....push your rod out and lift lift lift? Good video though!
@@donanderson9112 Until the fish is in the boat...
Big Dave knows the river very good , loved the video, don’t stop keep them coming👏
This video was a treat for me. Every Saturday morning years ago. Watching Rolland Martin fishing episodes was our religion oh son !
That was a great video. That fish at the end was a stud. I like the fact that Big Dave gave a legitimate estimate of the fish's size. Most guys would have claimed that fish was over 20 pounds.
Great job Big Dave, Wilson river one of top ten rivers out here on the coast side, 🤙keep on reeling yo'll 🎣
Roland Martin is one of the fishing icons that we all can respect ....
Thanks for the video, it was nice meeting you and Roland at the sportsman show!
Great job Dave, was fun to watch.

This was one of the best. Dave trying to help the grand master who would not listen too well. Made me laugh
I've been watching Roland on tv for 30 years. When I was a kid if he used it, I bought it.
What a great video. One of my favorites
Most patient guide I've ever seen.
Why is that.
Roland hooked up first cast eith his plug.
That tells you that Roland is extremely proficient at keeping the lure in the zone.
Theodore Dowman lolol you’d kiss him if you could.
I love the Wilson... yarn balls & sand shrimp........
Great to see Roland trying new stuff! These fast moving hill country rivers are a whole new world for him I believe. Quite different from bass on Okeechobee!
I like the passion of this guide, nice content.
Roland Martin changed your whole game up! #legend
You really keep your cool with the elderly. Kudos.

Lol yep.. I say steelhead green too.. or that the water has that steelhead murk to it.
Yeah that's not what I call big water....
Far from blownout...
I live in yamhill. I fell in love with the wilson last winter. The bank access is incredible.

Actually with all due respect to roland martin it was kinda of painful watching him not listen to the directions big dave was giving him.
Roland Martin doesn't know how to fight fish. or even hold a bait caster correctly.
Have you ever fought steelhead
8:30 had Roland not done that he migh've lost the fish.
When they jump you HAVE to give them slack or the hook is gone in most of my experiences.
Great show! Please list the rod specifications for the casting and spinning rods. At least factory model numbers. Looking to purchase several rods. Thanks
Cousins GTS91M-SG 9'1" 8-15LB Thanks for watching!
was this Roland's first time ever steelhead fishing??
How dare you touch the reel of a legend while he's playing the fish! LMAO!
My thought exactly lol
Weed through the cutts and the steelhead will be there somewhere has always been my experience.
What rod was Roland using for that spro plug he brought out, it looked like a blue lamiglass baitcast rod just looking for the specific rod
well steelhead fish my whole life 40 years in washington state that big steelhead that Roland caught at a Fish of life time and i would know i was guide many years
And you were on the radio.
BIG MINNOW y u say that?
Maybe with a different boatman, Roland might could get Ole Jimmy up to do some steelheadin’.
Not allowed bait or scent in the rivers here in BC.
Wow roland really has no experience with steelhead. Gotta learn sometime 🙂.
Imagine giving a certified legend like Roland Martin instructions on how to land a fish…I’d be nervous as hell.
Haven't seen Roland in many years. Kind of sad to see him here. I lived near the Wilson River for a couple years back in the "80"s.
Keemstar fishing?
Big Dave
Super patient😆
Roland you just killed a native cutthroat !! Damn son!!
Man you guys have a lot of hatchery fish
I saw you on dav TH-cam channel

Anyone got tips for bank fishing for the Wilson river?
i live in bellingham washington when and where do steel head run around me?

Off course not!!! He is a frickin living legend!!

How so?
That’s a 10 pounder 😆
WTF, get off that trolling motor and use the sticks Batman. That is a truly sacrilegious method for pulling plugs.
I would tell that dude to shut up no way I could fish with him
This niggah doing to much on the boat. Lol. Nice vid tho
