Can a dramatic baritone sing Handel? Cornell MacNeil in Samson: Honor and arms - 1969

  • Another Handel rarity from Cornell MacNeil-but an old standard for basses and baritones, delivered here in a impressive, straightforward manner: firm pitch, even and precisely articulated (but *unaspirated*!) runs, springboard leaps, and strong declamatory accent.
    .....................................
This channel is primarily about vocal emission-aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
Caveat: I'm biased in favor of baritones and baritone literature, but if you want to learn about and listen to all the greatest singers in the old-school tradition, explore this spreadsheet (voice parts are separated by tabs): bit.ly/2W4qmE3

So wonderfully flexible for such a huge voice.
I wish MacNeil had recorded "Messiah." Would love to have heard his "The Trumpet Shall Sound" during his prime --

MacNeil's powerful voice lends perfectly to this piece, it's only fitting for a giant to sing a giant's song!

He should've performed "O ruddier than the cherry" as well. I can only imagine his low F's and those great low G's he had (he goes to a low G here in the "though I could end thee at a blow...")

Big Mac poteva declamare anche tutti i cognomi di una rubrica telefonica. Aveva una canna armonica esagerata.
